When Alex pulled that bead out of the water I was so excited for a trade bead! To know about them is very cool, but to have an example to compare to in a museum is amazing, I have my own stash of trade beads from my family and others here in California, I look through them occasionally like a bead troll......

Your little Asian vase piece is probably from Japan. There was a special Japanese exhibition in Knightsbridge at one point in the late 1800's that caused a huge rise in popularity for all things Japanese. Gilbert & Sullivan even wrote The Mikado after that exhibition which W.S. Gilbert had gone to. It might be a satsuma piece with the raised bits but the satsuma I have seen is usualll darker in color.

Yes, we do think about our safety. Since we are usually searching in isolated areas, we are constantly taking note of other people. In fact, during this lark a man turned up, he was clearly drinking and made us feel uncomfortable enough for us to decide to leave for somewhere elce. X

My father had a metal mold that he sometimes poured melted (very hot) lead into. When it cooled, he would open the mold and a new toy lead soldier would fall out. Sometimes there would not be enough lead to fill the mold; and, the new toy solder would be missing part of a leg or foot. Daddy would drop that solder back into the pot until we hand more lead to melt down to make more toy lead soldiers. We saved our old empty tooth paste tubes, and old damaged toy lead soldiers, for another cold winter day (when Daddy would make us some new toy lead soldiers). The new toy lead soldiers were always very bright and shining when they first came out of the mold. It did not take long to turn the lead solders dark and ugly.
