Ghandi
India was placed under a British colonial rule in 1757.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a great nationalist leader, devoted his life to his country, India and his fellow Indians in such a difficult situation.
Ghandi was born as a member of the Vaishya caste in Porbandar, also known as the White City, in 1869. His grandfather and father served as a prime minister in a small kingdom, and his family was rich. As he was influenced by his mother who was a faithful Hindu,he was a vegetarian from his childhood in accordance with Hindu law and didn't neglect any duty of prayer.
Ghandi married a girl named Kasturba at the age of 13 in accordance with the Indian custom.
But he overcame a lot of adversity and passed the bar examination.
While Ghandi was engaged in various business activities,
his elder brother recommended that he should go to South Africa, so he went there in order to legally defend an Indian company. His heart broke when he saw his fellow Indians receiving subhuman treatment.
But when he had heard that a law would be adopted to deprive the Indians of the right to vote, he gave up returning to his hometown and set up the Natal Indian Society in which he started to work for the human rights of Indians.
Ghandi went to India, his homeland, in order to bring his family.
He prepared green pamphlets containing the story of Indians persecuted in South Africa and distributed them all over India.
Ghandi organuzed a nonviolent civil disobedience movement called the Satagrahi Movement.
"Nonviolence is not the arms of the weak but the arms of the strong.Those who are not afraid can win their rights."
After defending the human rights of Indians in South Africa, Ghandi struggled for the independence of his homeland.
Ghandi resisted the United Kingdom by staging the Salt March.
At that time,India was gradually moving from the division to unity.
Although the United Kingdom imprisoned Ghandi, it could not break his firm resolve.
India finally gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1947.
As he was a great leader who devoted his life to efforts together with his nonviolent struggle for the human rights of Indians and the independence of his country, Ghandi remains as a real saint forever in people's memory.
