I really admire the creators of this series for never letting Mugen crack and break down and ask for compassion and love from others. This would have been very easy to do, but they kept the integrity of his character intact. He will never openly let anyone into his heart and he's fine that way. Its part of what has kept him alive for so long.
@@GoldGregory at the end, it was more like an understanding, they were all very different people, but they accepted and understood each other. at the very end, they just went on living with their own separate lives
I just want to point out that this song is sung in the Ryukyu islands dialect from where Mugen hails. The Ryukujin were constantly attacked by the Shimazu and became vassals of the Satsuma domain, although it became a province they were always looked down by ethnically pure japanese and they suffered a shit storm during WW2 under imperialism. This song is supposedly about the whole struggles of the Ryukujin according to some articles I read about it. In the first episode when Mugen states that he's a Ryukujin they react with fear, mainly because after the Shimazu took ownership of the islands they banned them from having any sort of weapons, as a response to that and other impositions, a lot of Ryukujin turned to piracy and gained a lot of infamy, Mugen is one of them.
This is one of the most moving scenes in anything I've ever seen or read. It really conveys how a lifetime of poverty and violence have made Mugen's heart rock hard. The song is a brilliant choice. It's a folk song about a mother selflessly toiling without complaint so her children can have a better life. The compassion in the song contrasts with the absolute lack of compassion in Mugen's life, but there's a sense of toil, hardship and iron resolve in both.
the song is sung in ryukyu's dialect, and mugen is from ryukyu. it talks about the hardships of living as part of an opressed people, and the dangers they must endure even in doing mundane things like visiting a loved one.
About a year ago, I was going through an extreme depression, that's when I saw this scene in the anime, that music and scene, I could reflect all the loneliness and sadness that was going on in my head, and seeing the mugen move on even in the face of certain death, it motivated me to continue living too, today my life is not as perfect as I imagined, but at least my will to live is as real as my happiness.
Iirc, Shinichiro Watanabe said in an interview that he created the series knowing full well before production that he wanted this scene specifically to play out as it did.
this is what anime these days need, and any anime producers have to take a look. Sometimes fan-service and nice art isnt all that matter, but to have some moments with all the phylosophical dialogues, a mesmerizing soundtrack and characters that bond so well with the scenery is what make us truely appreciated.
@@carlose.pinedop.2051 I can’t remember the number but it’s where Mugen meets back up with his old crew and they want him to do one more job but they abandon him on the ship to die and the ship explodes and he falls in the water
This scene is very deep: we can understand his suffering and why he was taking his life in a dangerous way, he was just alone. After this, Mugen starts to look to the life with another eyes and change his acts, and, in the end, when appears Jin and Fuu in his mind, he understand that he's not alone anymore and they will be forever connected... Samurai Champloo is the best anime I've watched in my life, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks like this.
Samurai Champloo was and is even to this day my favorite anime. For me, it is the biggest masterpiece of an anime that I've ever seen. So sad that the company that made this anime went bankrupt...
Can't believe the show's almost 20 years old. I remember it being a cool new anime with an amazing soundtrack. It still is that, but it's shocking how quickly time went by.
On my first viewing, I never understood the brilliance of this scene. Then on the second viewing, it finally hit me why it’s arguably the best scene in the show. It conveys a lot of Mugens past without almost any words and with visuals in an effective way. One of the many examples why Watanabe is still one of the auteurs of anime.
There is a top comment on here as well that someone explained the significance of the song that goes with it and the dialect it was sang in. Has to do a lot with Mugen hailing from the Ryukyu Islands.
I admire the creator who create a character like mugen . He shows how life can be so cruel and miserable and yet you can stand for yourself . He must had felt sorrow or pity for his life but he knew no matters what happens in the life you are all alone in the end. Its you and only you . This character has a spark of solitude and thats give hope for living alone.
the contrast of the meaning of the song and the life of mugen is perfect!!a song about the purest love(motherly love)and a dude that never felt it(or any other kind)!
I always thought it was moving and relatable that despite the fact he never showed any fear when fighting and coming really close to death, when he really thought it was the end, he remarked he wasn't ready yet. Anyone who's had a near death experience can relate. No matter how brave, when you think your time is up, you don't want to go yet.
My favourite anime scene, made me realize how attached I had grown to Mugen,Fuu and Jin, without ever realising it.This anime feels like it has not deep meanings whatsoever, that is just 3 people who are constantly looking for food and sword fights but that is only at first glance. This scene is proof that Samurai Champloo has much more to offer.Hands down,my favourite scene not only in Samurai Champloo but in anime in general.Nothing will ever top this, anime wise at least.Thank you Samurai Champloo. I hope these three aren't still looking for food, hahaha.I like to think that after they parted, they ran into each other some days later, laughed it off saying it can't be helped and stuck together, going in another adventure. See you my hip-hop samurais...
I watched this part when i was really sad, and it left a strong mark on my heart now....I wish this anime has more episodes, i am so attached to characters :(
When those yellow butterflies appeared, I immediately thought of the same butterflies in the cowboy bebop movie, that seemed to symbolise the unreal and a path to death. I can’t see this as a coincidence... Watanabe is forever a legend for communicating such feelings
I'd assume its purpose, Mugen and Spike were supposed to die in said moments, but something was preventing them from dying since it seems like they both still had an unfinished purpose. Same goes with the Ainu who just refused to die since his ancestors wouldn't let him die until he finally achieved revenge against the people that burned their village, hence why Mugen resonated with that man since they're both in the same boat.
Mugen Near Death is one of the best anime scenes I have ever watched nostalgia doesnt even play a role I watched samurai champloo for the 1st time this year 2020
Favourite scene in the whole anime. Just makes you stop and ponder and just go 'wow'. The fact that all these emotions and his whole life story is conveyed in just under 5 minutes is amazing. The scene is visually stunning aswell and the background music just smacks you bang in the face. No more needs to be said , just amazing. Greatest anime ever!!!!!!!
Mugen is the ultimate loner badass. He survives on his own instincts and trusts nobody, he resorted to a life of piracy due to his upbringing, I love how the writers kept the integrity of Mugen's character even after this near death experience and kept him cold-hearted. Nice contrast of characters in the trio. Mugen always stood out because he was the rebellious type where as Jin was more clinical and adhered to the ways of Bushido.
I think these two episodes where Mugen’s backstory comes to light were easily the most captivating in the whole show. Up until this point in the series, the audience can kind of assume a bunch of things about the other main characters’ lives and why they are the way they are. Not Mugen though, he’s so skilled despite seemingly having no code or ethics or formal training, and he seems absolutely fearless, almost as if he seeks out chaos to feel alive. This backstory demonstrated why perfectly I think.
I have seen many anime and I've had many scenes that I truly love but I think the scene in Samurai Champloo where this track plays the first time is the best Anime Scene that I have personally watched.. I think that there wasn't anything close to it and I think I will never forget this scene and especially the song.. Wonderful anime and this song hurts my soul.
There's also one episode in cowboy bebop called "sympathy for the devil" where the antagonist child (who's basically hundreds of years old and immortal) sits atop a building during sunset and plays the harmonica. It's by watanabe again, and I feel these two scenes truly convey the deepest idea of loneliness and silent madness.
As a gipsy, I can empathize with Mugen's situation. He comes from a part of the country that is considered inferior by the rest and has no respect. In Europe, it's not uncommon for people to look at you in a derogatory way if you say you're a gypsy. You are then a clown and you have to fight for your respect but the people dont respect you, they just begin to hate you.
This scene was arguably the most profound and artistic one in the whole anime. It speaks to the souls of all human beings who have suffered or continue to suffer, either in this life or through the blood, sweat, and tears of those before us. This song attests to the indomitable human spirit struggling to survive in an unrelenting world. Beautiful and tragic
This theme/scene is one of the reasons i rate Mugen and his story over most of the others in Champloo. You dont even need to know too much about the origins of the song but it feels like it was written for Mugen. I have closed my eyes many times just because i want to feel the entirety of the song and wow. Shiki no Uta top 10 EDs btw.
This scene, the scene with Jin and Shino and the latest scene at the end of the series are probably the most melancholic and sad for my. This scene in particular is not only beautiful because the animation and music, which both complemented brilliantly, it also shows why Mugen is how it is, his unwavering but simple personality against life and the world that it surrounds him. Truly memorable.
Feels, memories, regrets, power, introspection, transcending, damn so many things and the scene with Mugen and the other entities looking from above was marvelous!
I wish more directors in film/tv would utilise music in this way. Just slow everything down and let something play in its entirety. Let the audience breathe it in, let their jaws drop, and break their hearts in the process.
I had a car accidént, In when i almost die… i Was in ICU, with an ileostomy postoperated of acute abdomen i had ARDS With non invasive mecánical ventilation. In some point i feel careless of my life and stop fighting. So i feel like i was falling to deep sea Just like mugen. Then i had a lot of flashbacks of my life and suddenly try to mantain the interfase of the mask so mantain my life. Since then i watch these scene,, remember and motivate my self to live. Is very melancholic and nostalgyc. So i am sure that creators knows and recreate the feeling of being dying Sorry for my english
I can't describe my feelings properly when i first saw this scene My eyes just weeped for some reason and it was like Losing yourself and Finding youself at the same time It's definitely one of the most touching scenes ever in an anime
From time to time. I come back here to listen/rewatch this scene while I'm going through a moment in my life where I need to reflect. Right now it's one of those moments where I need to reflect on things. I'm going through a lot right now between losing some people, and the amount of stress I've been dealing with lately, it's been affecting me quite a lot. I just want to cry ugly while listening to this, it's just how I feel right now. And I hope to come back here again to keep reflecting on myself and the challenges and stress I will encounter.
I lost a lot of people at the same time and I was unemployed and broke and living aboroad can't even tell my family about my situation , I put this video and played it like 20 times in a row. I had the same feeling you describing in your comment. But Life is moving and tomorrow is a new day. we all gonna die and we all forget.
My brother told me this is based off the creators personal close to death experience and makes even more better!just finished 2 months ago top 5 anime no doubt just with how it makes you feel is insane
@HumbleYourSelfXxxX parts i particularly noted were that his parents still watch over him who i believe were the two last spirits in the line who faded slowly. in the end he realizes he lived a life without regrets and is comfortable with the choices he made, but he ends up regretting that he couldn't know his friends better or spend more time with the people he managed to care about.
Mugen will always be my favorite character in Samurai Champloo. Whenever I see this scene, I can just feel everything that Mugen feels. Seeing him calmly, underwater. Makes me see the cold heart that he has and that he was always alone. One thing I absolutely love about Mugen is that he does not take bs for an answer, nor does he work with others. I definitely see him as more of an outsider who just lives carefree and doesn't care about the risks involved. He's just here to live his life the way he wants too. He's most certainly overly confident, which as we've seen over and over. Can cause him issues down the road as his confidence may get him in trouble or killed. Anyways, the messages that I've seen through this one clip describes the life he went through before meeting Jin and Fuu. And as well as some background history of where he came from. I find it very interesting. This anime has so much artifacts and some pretty interesting information and messages hidden through the entire anime. Rewatching it again made things feel more different for me.
Whenever I find myself feeling low or confronted with an overwhelming challenge, I seek solace in this specific song, as it serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring strength and resilience that pervades both life and death.
Really thought that Mugen was going to Live somehow, then he actually sunk, and this got me nervous, then this song started playing with the scene of Mugen looking at the skull, Didnt want to accept that hed die but At that moment it became apparent that he would, I started thinking "Oh Shit he's dying.. No damn it" Then the Grim Reapers came and that Pushed this over, Mugen staying calm throughout was interesting, and honestly the fact that he aint breakdown made The scene more AND less emotional at the same time.. Great Anime. Great Scene. Great Choice of Music. If anyone hasn't watched it and is here for whatever reason, Do yourself a solid and go watch it.
When you grow up in a rough place/home/family you develop the idea that you are destined to fail in this world, entitled to misery & tragedy, you think: why would God bring me into this on the first place? But eventually you grow out of that idea by overcoming, finding some type of success and happiness. Then when things go south bad enough you usually reset back to that though that God wants you miserable on this world & after a few failures you let go just like Mugen did on this scene, he could swim back up but he actually gave up thinking he was destined to betrayal and misery. Deep stuff...
It's 2021 and I'm still watching strictly for the emotional feel that it gives. I think we all agree anime is what we love so much because it brings out emotions and feeling in us that we just can't get enough of. P.S please take recycling serious everyone natural disasters can and will occur due to poor conditions that we've caused in nature. One step is recycling it's easy and great way to help the problem. Peace out and I LOVE you all
Its quite impressive how this Scene Shows so much without much Dialog only music and Visuals Its really that 90s feel which cant be replicated And i Miss that. Another Manga which perfectly embodies telling a Story without many words is Vagabond and i think it is storytelling at its finest
