In 1989 Ali came to Portland Oregon to officiate over the opening of our Police Activity League Gym. As a Portland Police Officer I was selected to be his personal bodyguard and driver for 3 days. This man was amazing. His style, gravitas and HUMOR is absolutely unsurpassed. The 3 days I spent with him are among my most cherished memories. Thank God I took photos and got signed memorabilia for my young son, now gone. God bless you Muhammad Ali.
@@vince1638 Wow. I have a story as well. Not nearly as good a yours. Me and a friend were driving down 6th ave in NY. Howards limo stopped next to us. Howard had his window down, and my friend said to howard loan me $5. Howard said, you give me 10 and I will loan you 5. We still laugh and tell that story.
You're right but I think there was a little bit of tongue in cheek by both men! Ali was great and Howard was in the right place at the right time and, like a barnacle on a large and beautiful whale, he became popular because of these interviews! He was a very smart and Ali went on to take on a different role as peace keeping ambassador for the unattainable idealism thought, that there will be a time, when "...little Black children will play with little White children and not he judged on the color of their skin!" Imagine!
Zachary Laid Finding Freedom So long as there exists a history of boxing there will be Ali in it, just as anyone knowing anything of boxing still knows of John L. Sullivan today. These kinds of legends don't die.
The greatest of all times not only as a boxer but as a leader of people white and black. Muhammad Ali will go down in history as truly the greatest of all times four people.
There is not one sports personality around today day like Muhammad Ali I think the closest to him would be Tyson Fury not the Old Tyson Fury the Tyson Fury that has came back more Humble and a little bit eccentric but still not like years ago when there was a lot of sports personalities but Muhammad Ali tops the lot will always go down as the greatest of all time not trust in boxing the greatest man of all time sure he is the most written about man on the planet
-and NOT just for his boxing skills, but far more importantly for his willingness to stand for what he believed was right. Howard also stood by Ali and took a huge risk for him when no one else in the media would in his darkest hour - and Ali never forgot that. These two men truly loved each other.
Me too!! Like how he taunted his opponents in the ring. And how he cheated on his wife after his soulful conversion to Islam. And how he called white people devil's. So much to admire!
He was a truly brilliant fighter and athlete, a courageous man and a rare human being. He not only shook up the world, he made it a brighter place and made people smile.
These 2 were as funny as Martin and Lewis....Ali was so awesome that weather you agreed or disagreed with him, you had to love him....I cried when he lost to Spinks.....Ali would've DEYSTROYED holmes inside of six rounds in his prime. I'm a White Christian Conservative Man who grew up watching Ali and I don't blame him one bit for refusing the draft...fight for a country that wouldn't let him use certain toilets, stores or vote...U can just tell how much Ali loved people....no matter what color they were. R.I.P. Champ.☺️☺️
Ali was the GOAT, Cosell is an all time jersey. He loves to create drama to get Ali started. When Ali said, " Cosell everytime you open your mouth you should be arrested for air pollution. " That was dope.
What amazes me is that Angelo Dundee was present at most of Ali's TV appearances in the audience and all of his press conferences. They truly were friends and more like family. Dundee once said "Muhammad Ali was the best thing that happened in my life". It doesn't get any clearer than that.
El Tiburon... That’s a BIG FACT!!! Angelo Dundee loved Ali genuinely... Also Angelo Dundee was the ONLY white man trusted to be with Ali by his Muslim Brothers. They knew Angelo was sincere and honest.
Ali was always an icon I admired. His lines were so witty and humorous. The worst part of the disease, when it caught up to him, was it took away his quick wit. It was akin to taking away the beautiful song of a bird. But i'm grateful for the memories. To most of the world and me, Ali was family. And we were proud of him.
If everyone spoke their mind all the time blood would run in the streets. There is such a thing as diplomacy and being a nice person. If you have nothing nice to say then keep your mouth shut!
@briant2140 the dangers of not having unfettered freedom of speech far outweigh the dangers of having it. Conformity and silence are far more dangerous to a societies well being.
Their relationship was of mutual respect. Ali knew that Cossell was always going to be a reporter and Cossell knew that Ali was always going to be Ali.
These were the days. When interviewers weren't afraid to ask the real questions that people wanted to know about, and said it how it was. Not the scripted bs of today
This is somebody we'll never see the likes of again. Sharp as a tac, powerful and humble, yes humble. He stood up for what he believed in and he made sure we'd all know about it. I give him all the respect he deserves when he didn't go into the armed forces against the Vietnamese people. He said, "I've got no qualms with the Vietnamese, they didn't do anything to me". It now makes so much more sense to me. I'm 63 and although I've only watched a couple of fights with my father, I heard him say how great this man really was. I can appreciate that now. My friend's have all his fights on video and they'd watch them over and over so yeah, I heard Ali's voice alot and he was truly his authentic self. What you see is what you got. There will never be a man on Earth who could do what Ali has done. I miss his voice. I can hardly bear to watch the cruel trick a "loving God" played on him. I know people will say, everything happens for a reason. I'd then ask them, what's the reason for this cruelty. Missing you very much, Mr. Muhammed Ali. Rest now, 😔✨🤧🌹🌹🌹🌹
IF YOU HAD A BAD DAY......JUST LISTEN TO THESE GUYS........YOU WILL BE CRYING WHEN THEY'RE FINISH..........LOVE EM BOTH....RIP TO THESE LEGENDS.........
Great celebrities!!! Howard was an excellent sport writer, one the best. , if not the best! Ali was a real Champion....and they both great human beings
Hey Nicky, How In The Hell Can You Say You Remember All Of Their History. When Were You Born 1963 Or 1964 You Were Too Young To Remember Any Clay/Ali Fights In The 1960's Mr. B S.
Amazing intellectual jousting by two heavy weight-thinking friends. Just charming. I am beside myself with tears. God bless both these super-intelligent men. RIP. Mozzman.
I don't think people are that much different then than they are today. There's always been hate and ignorance but today w/technology, and social media it gets much more exposure.
@@Lewis9709 I think people are much more self absorbed now than the 60's and 70's, and technology and social media have a lot to do with it. Both have made it possible for narcissists to pretend that they're more important than they really are. That worries me some.
OMG!! What an introduction! These two guys had a great rapport. Funny combination. Ali was the best heavyweight ever. Cosell was the best sports announcer ever. They clearly liked each other very much.
Howard Cossell made a brilliant comment about how the Heisman Trophy is a farce as no player from a Black College (HBCU), had ever received a vote at that time and yet many of the great players in the NFL came from HBCUs.
Today it would be impossible for a sports journalist to talk to a superstar of Ali's calibre like that. Cossel was absolutely right about the quality of Ali's opponents at that time and Ali was not offended by that. If you would talk to Wladimir Klitschko or Floyd Mayweather like that you would never again get an interview. Today's star athletes expect to get their asses kissed in exchange for access.
It’s 2021 and my favorite Boxer Muhammad Ali is still getting watched. You were truly the best boxer and a very charismatic person that had ever existed. You will be missed, Ali! 💔
I remember getting up as a 9 or 10 yr old asking "did Ali win last night" as in UK time difference....and spending the weekend on cloud 9 if he had....Great Man...and era
When Howard Cosell spoke on HBCU’s and Black Players not ever getting a vote, I knew this man was light years ahead of other reporters. Wish these players in the modern NFL would listen and join Colin Kaepernick!
@Ian Dog I rarely ever reply to comments, but I wonder what it takes for someone to have such ignorant thoughts. Liston was the heavy favourite going into their fight together. Ali whooped him so hard that he made Liston quit. Liston would demolish the heavyweight competition today, as would Foreman and Frazier; who Ali beat also. Paterson, Norton, Lyle etc. Yet you claim 'a time of mediocrity' when in fact Ali was the greatest of all times! Ali was the toughest to ever enter the boxing ring and the most heroic man in the USA at the time!
@Ian Dog what makes Muhammad Ali the greatest not only a fighter but his charisma , personality inside the ring and out, beat liston when nobody gave him a chance, plus ali took a stand like a man and a true champion against American against the Vietnam war and was proven right all along. And beat foreman when nobody gave him a chance, that is exactly what made ali the greatest.
@Ian Dog yo you're not a black person how the fuck you know and what you saying I totally disagree on your non black point of view . You obviously misinformed Ali wasn't scared of the war Muhammad Ali took a stand against the war because of the racial injustices inflicted upon black people in America . So pick up a book you know shit! Why should he fight against the Vietnam people when white people in America mis treatment of black people was far more important than fighting in a phoney war . Know history your point of view is twisted.
Ali knew Cosell real well, and had great chemistry. You don't get interviews like this anymore. In fact, there ain't no more guys like Ali. The world misses him.
This guys man, the insults were so funny and the love. Sport then was great, because of this conversation they made you look forward to the next fight.
