Smart home devices are handy, but who wants to pull out their phone just to adjust the lights or pause the music? Mui Lab's solution is a single piece of wood that almost magically becomes a simple touchscreen where you can accomplish simple internet-of-things tasks. They also make a wood post where you can record your kid's height and recall it later in a similarly luminous fashion.

I am really surprised by how transparent the screen is if it is not projected. Any solution currently available has some level of opaqueness.

Is it being projected onto the wood? I don't get it. If it's just wood how is it displaying stuff?

I don't know for sure, but it could be a veneer over a circuit board. Super thin wood maybe stiffened a bit by an epoxy and bright LED's behind them could work. I know veneer is used for lampshades, so its plausible.

I guess might be a thin transparent led matrix with capacitive touch may be placed on to the wood

It really doesn’t matter, kind of like this product itself. Functions you can easily have on your phone or tablet, but instead you have to walk over to a piece of wood on your wall? Why? If just putting a horizontal strip of wood on your wall is considered aesthetic pleasing, I guess I could run over to Home Depot and grab some maple or pine and just go to town. In reality nobody does this because it is aesthetically pointless, again much like this piece of tech. I can’t wait till version 2.0 of wood comes out, so I can throw out my old tech and upgrade to a fresh piece of wood, lol.
