I've been teaching this song for 50 years. I learned it from Utah Phillips who told me it was from Blind Lemon Jefferson, but he also told me it was endemic so found all over the south. This girl does a great job with it. Oakland CA

I love playing it too. There's a couple of deceptively tricky spots in the guitsr part. She sings it better and grooves it better than anyone else. The tune is old enough that there isn't really a known origin. But it is based on an old call and response playground game from early 1900s. There's a Smithsonian documented recording of children singing it on a playground in Alabama in the 50s. It's on RU-vid. 🎸
