But she received same negative treatment by government and public when her case came and people did call her names at the time. Never forget. She was called an opportunist for speaking out with people saying she’s bringing Pakistan’s reputation to disrepute etc and people accused her of trying to reframe Pakistan and trying to get a visa from America. This is what everyone used to say. So, let’s not change history. Pakistanis treated her awfully and disgustingly.

Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times once rightly called Mukhtaran Mai, the Rosa Parks of the 21st century. Her extraordinary courage, resilience and determination cannot be lauded enough. What is even remarkable that she utilised the funds to start schools, a shelter home and a resource centre and did not discriminate the students for being children of the perpetrators of the terrible crime against her. This podcast was also a timely reminder on General Musharraf's era in which he and his ministers were more worried about airing of Pakistan's dirty laundry to the world rather than focusing on the plight of women and girls.

At 21:20 Mukhtar mentioned an incident where a girl was buried alive with her infant child by her own family . I saw a documentary on HBO where a girl named Saba was shot , tied up in a sack ( boree) and put in the river by her father and her uncle . She had eloped and gotten married . Her family used the same ruse that they will take her home and then her husband and his family can take her back with IZZAT . But they beat her , shot her and put her in the river on the way home . She survived and was able to get help . According to the documentary as many as 1000 girls are murdered in a year in the name of honor in Pakistan . Mukhtar is a very courageous and brave lady , thanks to the podcast for having her as a guest .

One similar incident took place in Lahore where brother with the help of mother burned the daughter alive in the court yard. Also in UK a Yemeni girl was killed by uncle and family members because they elope and married to their lovers. Why it mostly happens in Muslim communities?

Mukhtara Mai is a legend. It’s not easy to talk about the chronic trauma. The host indicated that her kids wouldn’t know her because the incident happened long ago which doesn’t seem to be the case given her old age.

Wow what a strong woman. Even in urban areas we dont have that kind of brave women. This incident shows unfortunately, pakistan has gone back to zamana jahiliya. Unless the whole court system changes , there wont be any changes in Pakistan. Shame on these Jirgas that cannot even protect their women and children. What kind of men and women are in towns that didn’t stand up. Buzdil men , how they are going to stand up for the country. Why they were giving land to relatives? This kind of crime didn’t even happened in partition. Very sad what kind of police officers are there? Wadera system and tribal system needs to end in Pakistan. There were maulvis there too? The only reason she survived because her story went to western countries. She went through so much physical and emotional abuse. Salute to all brave men and women in Pakistan and outside Pakistan who stood with her. These kind of women we need in Pakistans ‘s Politics
