Mulan is a fantastic animation Movie Reaction - PROTECT THE EMPEROR! 

Fun fact : Shan Yu (the villain) is the only one who ironically does not treat Mulan differently because she's a woman. All he cares about is that she's the one who took down his army. He was not surprised because she was a woman, he simply did not expect her to be there. The barbarian tribes from medieval China actually trained women to fight as well (or so I've read). I also realize now why she left her comb near her father : she doesn't need it anymore after she cuts her hair. It's so obvious yet so subtle. The gentle, submissive girl is no more.

The film is all in the context of the societal pressures of the time, it’s not the fathers fault for pressuring mulan to marry, that was literally the only thing women could do at the time in order to be accepted, and the father is also subject to those same pressures but having to fight even though he isn’t well enough to do it. The film is about rebelling against what is expected of you and becoming g the best person you can be regardless of what society says.

Mate, I think you should not look at it from today's perspective but from historical context. Individualism is quite a modern concept and arranged marriages, family honour and patriarchy are still quite common today - back in Mulan's China no-one would even consider women to be equal to men, nor would they have heard of a country where such a thing existed..... just saying... I am pretty sure that Mulan's father is as lenient as he can be and in my opinion he loves Mulan very much just as she is but he has to uphold the family honour in public.

Ok. I see people defending the dad a lot, so I'm gonna defend Shang a little. Yes, he does have that culturally-ingrained misogyny that most of the characters have, but I don't think that's the ONLY place his behavior toward Mulan after she's revealed to be a woman is coming from. Consider who Shang is as a person. He's a military man with a strong sense of duty and honor, and he's very proud. Often, he expects the same sense of duty and honor from everyone around him, and is disappointed. So he had a moment of vulnerability when he told Ping that he owed "him" his life, and said "from now on, you have my trust." And then almost immediately after declaring his trust for Ping in front of all of his men, he learned that she was lying about who she was from the moment they met, which is a HUGE breech of trust in his mind, so there's the feeling of betrayal, and also wounded pride because he felt like he had been made a fool of in front of his unit for not having seen through it, and publicly placing his trust in someone who was lying to him. Not saying his behavior was right. But I don't think it was purely misogyny, and I get where he's coming from.

Your pep talk at the end reminded me of one of my favorite sayings: “Those who say a thing cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.”

12:18 back in those times, parents were more concerned with their children's lives rather than happiness. It was soooo easy to die back then and without family support that death was pretty certain. Parents also knew that Mulan would be much happier in the future if her children do not know cold and hunger, than for her to "discover herself".

The doll moment represents the fact that Mulan empathizes with the little girl who was killed. She has a viewpoint that the men don't

I love grandma so much. She said things the way she saw them and it was funny. Mulan proves that women can do more than tradition expects of them.

Matchmakers were quite common, not just in Chinese culture, but across a lot of cultures. Mothers and fathers would seek out the matchmaker (for their children), who would then make business-like proposals to both families to see if they agree. The ceremony and ritual in the beginning would be for her to observe Mulan and see if she would be a good fit. Obviously it was dramatized like crazy, but that was the goal.

I love this movie so much! One of my all time favourites! "My ancestors sent a little lizard to guide me"? Dragon, dragon, I don't do the tongue thing". "But you're tiny!" "I'm travel sized for your convenience, if I was my real size, your cow here would have a fit!"

Still don't know how she is a princess. But she is one of my favorite Disney princesses. Strong, determined, she fights for what's right despite the world saying she should be something else.

try to remember it's a different culture. His honor as the head of his household is all that matters and what he is judged by. Also, as to how they treat women like property...it was no different in that same era across most of the world. certain throughout most of Europe. It wasn't until this past century that women won the fight to have their voices heard and to be allowed to do as they please. getting worked up watching as story about the distant past doesn't help. We respect those women and what they had to live with and it was for them and us that women everywhere fought for the freedoms they have now.

Fun facts: 1) Pay attention to Mulan's eyes. At the beginning and in the end she has long 'girly' lashes, but when she pretends to be a guy, her eyes become more 'manly', with shorter lashes. 2) The dog's name is Little Brother not just so. In the legend, Mulan had a brother, but he was too young to go to war. 3) The Hua Ping alias that Mulan uses is a Chinese pun - it literally means 'flower pot' and its idiomatic meaning is 'silly beauty'. 4) Mulan got a habit of stroking her hair (like in the scene where her father comforts her after the matchmaking fail) from her voice actress (alas, don't remember her name).

Mulan is still one of my top favorite Disney "princesses" other than Pocahontas since I'm Native American. But I always related to Mulan's personality and family values.

re: your speech at the end, the world doesn't owe kids anything, but they still deserve respect & safety. safety, like familial love, _should_ be unconditional (although it isn't always this way & quite a few kids get neither). when I taught kids, I made sure to show them respect first bc it goes both ways. I still ran the classroom, but I didn't talk down to them. I gave them respect & they gave it right back to me bc that was the expectation I set.

Wanna hear the fun fact? Mongolian people wasn't sexist in recruiting soldiers. When the Hun said a "soldier from the mountain", he wasn't shocked that he was a girl. He was surprised she is the soldier who did it. How funny that Mulan's allies left her for being a girl while The Hun gave the same treatment to all people.

I made it 12 minutes in. I can't get farther than this. And I love this movie. You're projecting 2021 morality onto 1500 life. Whether or not it's right, in today's context, this movie reflects what life was 500 years ago. I'm a parent, I fully agree with what you're saying. But saying a woman 500 years ago in China had the option to do more than marry well have have children, except in extreme circumstances, is lacking a basic understanding in history and culture Think of the horrible things people 500 years from now will say about us, using their "modern" thought.

To understand the reasons for several things throughout this movie you have to understand the cultural customs of the time. This movie was as much about the battle and struggle against social and cultural customs as it was anything else.

You're absolutely right when you say children aren't the same than when we're young. My parents are teachers too (my father in high school and my mother in kindergarten) and they saw thé difference. You know, when Mulan cut her hair, there's a symbolic signification : in Asian culture, it means the person let her old life behind her. Shan Yu isn't surprise when he saw Mulan is a girl because, in his country, women can be soldiers.

An interesting note about this movie is that the last musical number is 'A Girl Worth Fighting For', which abruptly ends as they come across the destroyed village. This signifies a shift in tone for the movie, and what was once a lighthearted fun time is now a serious war

Mulan was my first girl crush, I just can relate so well. Refection is and always has been the song I identify with. Just like her, I never seem to be able to make my parents proud. And I have struggled a lot in live and stil do. But every time I think of this movie and Mulan, it does give me hope that maybe some day I'll be able to fully embrace myself and finally make my parents proud

may I remind you that this takes place in a different era and a different culture and customs so a lot of idea in this fit within those things and not of today's society.

Just wanna say, Mulan was mostly fine with becoming a bride. Mostly because she didn't really have a choice and really wanted to bring honor to her family.

Something I think I love a lot about this movie are two things: The hun leader, upon realizing that Mulan was the soldier, did not make any fun of her for being a woman or didn't say anything about having been beaten by a woman, takes her as a serious threat. He immediately starts attacking her, not underestimating her. And of course the part that the dad just drops all those trophies she earned because in the end, none of it matters. He was just proud of her being his child and what a big heart she has.

I see some people saying you're being futurist, or putting 21st century expectations on 15th century people, but I don't think that's fair. there were people back then (far less, but they existed) who were strongly feminist & rejected the idea of women only existing to be property. the very Huns that Mulan fought in this movie had more respect/opportunity for women than the Chinese did! they allowed women to be soldiers & have full freedoms.

What's so amazing is that, in the legend this movie is based off of, she became the greatest General of the Chinese army.

Anime is Japanese. This was a very loosely based telling of a real female soldier who existed in the dynasty this era was....about 500 yrs ago. The mindset was strongly different. Women didn't have rights. So.... In many different cultures, even today, the obligation is to the family as a whole, and not of individual happiness. Maintaining honor to the family name is what was important. A woman's roll was to get a worthy husband who was also heavily burdened with duties to the family.

Watching your western, 21st century moral and social code try to deal with the reality of feudal, Imperial China was hilarious :D

My fav fact. The real Mulan didn't marry the general, she became the general.

For the culture they lived in, mulans father was a pretty good father. Sure he wants her to marry, but that was nothing more than the norm in those times. He did however love her a lot and even though he had hoped for her to impress the matchmaker he did tell her it was okay not to be as quick or to fit in perfectly(the part with the blossoms). he cares about honour a lot, but when she came home with gifts that were one of the greatest honours possible at the time, he trew them aside because he cared more about her comming back save. Also when he told her to learn her place I think and i’m not sure about this one but i think he says this because he’s afraid that she won’t get farr in if she doesn’t learn to fit into norm and he won’t be there to teach her how to deal with watever her falling out of place may cause.

This movie taught me about girl power at a very young age. Mulan was my role model as a young girl and still is in a lot of ways

I've seen this movie 8 times and I'm 36 . I never get tired of the great music and Eddie Murphy he's so great in this. It's one of my favorite movies . I still love this movie better then the live version one they made. Who agrees ? 😁 ps always love your reactions 😁

The movie is inspired on a legend! ❤️ Hua Mulan was a girl that stole her sick dad's armour and took his place in war. They even have a statue and everything. So knowing it happened in real life it's even more inspiring ✨️

This is how things were back then. No such thing as doing what your heart desired and telling the government no I don’t feel like it. I’m not defending it but I’m saying , you can’t look at it in today’s eyes of whatever the hell is going on today. Also, culturally speaking , there are men who fight knowing they may not come back.
