It wasn't about being realistic. It offended a lot of viewers in China and they've become a huge market so it was financially stupid to offend them again and risk losing out on millions of viewers. But as a Chinese American, this movie looks fucking stupid and definitely needed mushu and the songs
Realism is boring. In games, I can land a 900 on a skateboard. If I do it irl, I'll likely die or end up a vegetable. Not to mention a skateboard costs 120$+ while Tony Hawk Pro Skater can go for 30$ish.
And there was a talking dragon in the animated one and still people loved it. This isn't about realism. This is about the message. The message of being responsible and being there for your family.
they know what made them special, effort. But why put in effort when the window licking, knuckle dragging masses will still gleefully shell out whatever price asked fo them, as long as they can chase that nostalgia high and pretend for a second they're little kinds again who have hopes and dreams, not sad adults busting their asses for fifty hours a week just so they can barely afford to live in squalor.
She was chosen in the original animation. She was the awakened great stone dragon. It's imagery shown throughout the sequence of her cutting her hair & suiting up. That's why mushu couldn't wake it up. It was already awoken in mulan.
Kendall L. Buchanan she’s not the chosen one. She put herself in the ordeal, like the girl in the hunger game. The animation dragon stuff was released by the ancestors to protect her because of her courage. There is nothing chosen about her.
@@newp848 she might've been chosen one in some sense but all around she had to prove herself through hard work and her wits that she is equally capable of being a warrior and a hero. This new Mulan just uses the power of Chi to solve everything to the point that I think the Chi allows her to teleport considering how the movie was cut.
I haven't seen the new Mulan. I just meant to say she was chosen to be uplifted and protected in the animated one. I wasn't referring to any prophesy. Sorry
I always got the impression from the movie that every family in that world had a house dragon protector. It never came across as a chosen-one thing, but Disney's way to redo the success that was Robin Williams' genie from Aladin.
The Junglebook one was alright when it came out, the problem is Disney is so creatively bankrupt that they have to remake their past successes for any chance of selling tickets. And usually, the past successes' 2D classical animation is far nicer to look at. On top of that, story goes overboard in typical hollywood style to be more surface level entertainment than having much substance. and so usually doesn't compete with the original anyway... Remakes are already a bad enough cash grab to do, but when the remake is worse and less enjoyable than the classics, it's just pointless. And yeah, maybe their purpose is to sell them to a new generation, but if I had kids I wouldn't be showing them the remakes.
Personally, I am becoming more and more artistically terrified for the alleged upcoming remake of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” with David Henry Hwang as the supposed writer. Ever since I fell in love with the animated musical, read the original book, and saw how the Disneyfied stage plays like “Der Glöckner Von Notre Dame” could create a nice blending of both versions (even to the point of Esmeralda dying at the end), I always wanted a live-action remake to exist that tries something similar. The idea has been in my head, even before the live-action remakes became a Disney fad, and I even did my own fan projects of it on my RU-vid channel. But now, unless Disney both realizes that they cannot just coast on nostalgia with Hunchback and lets its writers make a dark and dramatic musical with passion, the remake that Disney releases is likely going to figuratively hurt me far more than any others have yet.
I don't exactly "hate" the movies, but I haven't watched any of them, and don't plan to, they stank heavily of "money grab" from the beggining. My time is better spend ... anywhere else really XD. and Holy Moly $30 on top of the suscription? REALLY? At that price tag I can just pre-order Cyberpunk 2077 and (most likely) be thoroughly entertained for tenths or maybe even hundreds of hours.
Damn, I haven't heard Jeremy actually be pissed at a movie in a while. I've seen him rip a movie apart, I've seen him be disappointed and defeated, but actually being salty at a movie has been a while.
This film clearly was written and directed by people that literally have zero clue or understanding of Asian culture. Seriously, passing off Tai Chi as "the Force", were they frigging stoned when they thought that would be enough to explain Mulan's supernatural abilities to be amazing? X)
I think you misunderstood what they’re attempt was then. This is based on the real myth which has mystic elements. They didn’t want Mushu because his existence is just for jokes. Granted Mushu was actually good and the witch lady did nothing besides witch stuff.
akshay satish Bruh, it has a 46% on Rotten Tomatoes audience score chill tf out. Also, IMDb has a low score for it because MONTHS before the movie even released some kid made a hundred alts and gave it 1 star reviews with random BS in the review. In the end, so what about critic scores anyway? You’re free to have an opinion on a movie being good or not and fake scores shouldn’t define that
They tried with the warrior dude, but they didn't say cow so.. whats the point..>? Can you imagine when Biden takes office how bad these movies pushing agendas will be?
What disappointed me the most was that, in the cartoon she succeeds in gains the respect of the other people around her by using her insights to compensate for her lack of strength, she's smart and hard-working, and that is how she gets ahead, in the movie it just felt like oh, she has magic chi, so you know, I guess we believe her.
@@tar_a I am aware that it isn't, but I'm pretty sure there isn't a witch lady or use of magic chi in the original Chinese story. At least I've never come across it in other adaptations even ones that are hailed as being more true to the original.
Rebekah Rhodes in the original story she buys her own horse and sets off for war and she possessed the necessary fighting skills to hold her own amongst her comrades. Some adaptations make her more badass than this and all adaptations portray her as a warrior.
The original Mulan showed her strength in her intelligence, not in her physical strength. She learned to fight in the army, sure, but that wasn't her main strength. Her fighting skills helped her defensively, not offensively. She took down Attila the Hun, sorry I mean Chenggis Khan... dang it I forget his name. Anyways, she doesn't fight the big baddie head on. She outwits him. The moment she got his sword from him and pinned down his tunic with it, it was Mushu who finished him off. Mulan was known for her planning, her strategy, just like when she took down 99.9% of the Hun army with an avalanche. THAT is the Mulan we love, because it shows that, in a world where the strongest people have power, Mulan doesn't have what it takes in strength alone, but can inspire people with strategy in order to fight back. That was her strong suit. The "girl power" thing doesn't work, especially not in Ancient China where everything is decided by the skill and strength of a man's sword.
@@thomassowellaudiobooks6441 , Chi is not magical powers. Everyone has Chi but not everyone can use Chi as they are not taught to harness Chi. Basically, in Chinese wuxia (fantasy martial arts) stories, Chi has always been a vital element where the hero/heroin outperforms other people. Anyway, if you follow the original story of Mulan, she was supposed to be an accomplished fighter even before she joins the army. If you're not a good fighter, you would not last 12 years in the army fighting the Rourans.
Guy Mor , they are making a Disney wuxia / Chinese fantasy martial arts movie. Chi in those stories are not superpowers or magic. You just need to find a sifu/sensei to teach you in those stories. Anyway, a lot of Chinese people believe in Chi but it does not work like movies. The best example is tai chi exercise you see a lot of Chinese people do. It is supposed to improve your breathing and indirectly improve your strength and health too
@@thomassowellaudiobooks6441 , Like I say, it is not magic. If you've watched wuxia stories since young, you'll understand what is Chi in those stories. It's not like a chosen one, force sensitive or even mutant powers. Everyone has Chi but people only become Chi expert if they are taught to harness it. It wuxia stories, Chi is linked to kungfu. It is part of kung fu where you need to learn and practise, then only you can use it. The movie made a big mistake. If they just insert a scene or two showing her father teaching her, it will make more sense.
Totally agree with "dumb af" here. As an Asian woman, this movie try SO HARD to make us feel right, but honestly it just makes me feel yucky! It's fake feminism, like the animated version has so much more realism in terms of being a woman in Asian family & the kind of weight that comes with it. And don't get me started with Mulan's Jedi power. Like come onnn, the reason why people love Mulan is because she's just a normal girl who work harder & find more creative ways to solve problems. She doesn't have the body strength, but she's got the wit & much faster. She embrace her uniqueness instead of unleash her hidden force 🙄. I really wonder how Disney define "realism", because their animation are just so much more realistic (emotion & logic) than the live action.
Animated Mulan: The story of a woman trying to survive in a man's world, but through intense training and military discipline, she ultimately earns everyone's respect and is recognized as a hero for her bravery against impossible odds, quick thinking, and weapon skills she learned at boot camp. proving women can be just as good as men Live action Mulan: The story of a woman dominating in a man's world through the use of magic... because you know, women can't survive without handicaps. hard work is for men. women are born godly
I HOPE Disney loses a lot of money on this so they can finally stop with the live action remakes. I mean hell, you remember the 90s when we only had 3 remakes, both of which were really good? I mean hell, they were good because of how different they were, from the 94 Jungle Book that focuses on Mowglie's conflict between being human and animal (and was hella dark as hell) and 101 Dalmations that added a lot of humor to the film.
I personally don’t think it’s possible for Disney to come to that conclusion. They would probably think didn’t do well financially because of its release on Disney + for $30. Mulan 2020s financial success or failure has more control over if the same release strategy will be used for Black Widow.
I actually don’t mind the live action remakes I just haven’t liked the ones they released so far. Lion king , Aladdin and now Mulan are all horrible remakes and don’t follow the script and scenes 1:1 if any live action wants to be successful needs to be exactly like the original just with real people. That’s how I feel live action remakes will succeed
If it's a 1 to 1, scene for scene remake, then why make it in the first place? Why not save money and just re-release the one everyone already loves and just roll in the money?
Why would I pay $30 to watch an inferior rehash of a 90s classic, when I can watch all the 1998-2005 Disney Shows + All The Classic Simpsons episodes + The Mandalorian + The original Star Wars trilogy (and Revenge Of The Sith) + every MCU film, etc. for just $10 bucks a month, such a rip off
Disney: "The live-action Mulan won't have Mushu. We want to keep this movie realistic as possible, to respect Chinese culture" Fans: "Understandable, have a great day" also Disney: "So anyways, here's a shape-shifting witch with supernatural powers" *VISIBLE CONFUSION*
Just finished it now an not sure how I feel. No Mushu but you have a pointless Phoenix and a shapeshifter with questionable motive l lol. Should have just bought weed hahahaha
Disney seem to have forgotten the golden rule: story before everything else. Pixar learnt this in their very first film and completely changed it because they knew that the story wasn't working.
@@MeraHarch Toy Story was majorly reworked pretty far into its development because the stories and characters weren't endearing. I specifically remember hearing that Woody was kind of a huge dick in the original. So, they reworked a lot of the story to make it what it is today. Pretty sure that's what OP meant.
@@medhanshsankaran595 It's the fact that the message is trying to send is hypocritical. She apparently has a steel sword, even though steel did not exist at that time in China. Was first invented in India, apparently not done in China until 500 years after Mulan. "3rd century AD - China is commonly credited with being the first mass producers of high-quality steel."
@@warrenlauzon5315 Mulan is set after the third century in China. I am not aware of a version that sets Mulan before the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534CE) during and in which territory the first version of Mulan in the ballad of Mulan was written. I think you are confusing the Han-Xiongnu war(141-87 BCE) for the setting of Mulan I can understand as the original Mulan is a confusing mess of Chinese and generally East Asian culture, history and setting. However from the uniforms, sets and general style Disney's 2020 Mulan seems to be set during the Tang Dynasty(618-907CE) when most of the most famous telling's of Mulan were written and set and that is well after the 3rd century.
So they took everything that made the original great (music, mushu) and added gratuitous material that messed up the pacing, all with mediocre effects. So why did they make this movie again? Oh yeah money. This is kind of depressing.
Technically the original animation isn’t the ORIGINAL. Disney based it off a story and added singing and all that jazz. This is more in line with the actual story. But I understand why people are mad since everyone was expecting the cartoon version.
How I will remember the movie... a comedy, but slightly disappointed that Mulan didn’t go for the General’s daughter or become the Emporer’s next concubine.
There was zero character growth for Mulan. As a child Mulan is this super powerful, ultra agile, supremely gifted mary sue. Goes off the war and has to pretend to be just another weak wimpy little man (yuck). Then decides she is a superhero, screw all this hiding. This is NOT character growth.
The character growth is shown by her deciding to show her true self. Being loyal brave and true is the thing they show the most and she realized she needed to be true to her heart. I liked that she chose to show herself instead of being found out. It shows the integrity and the braveness of mulan
@@margaretbakly7810 When a character starts off as an amazing prodigy then hides it then later shows what she was from the start it is not character growth. That is called a mary sue character. In the original she went from somebody that had no idea what she was doing to absorbing the training and dedicating herself to BECOMING better for herself, her fellow warriors, her family, and her nation. She worked her butt off for it. Not once was she shown as this spectacular specimen that just has all the talent. No, that would be boring. Instead she was shown as a great woman who overcame the prejudice of a nation that didn't think women should fight and she overcame the absolute terror so her dad wouldn't go out and die. Risk is what makes a hero. Showing everybody how fabulous she already was is not a heroic journey.
This is the 2020 feminist model for writing female characters. If they had given Mulan flaws or a need for character growth, they’d have been accused of being misogynistic pigs.
@@geraldm4728 just to build on your comment. The "hero's journey" is a classical depiction of what a story centered on a hero needs to captivate the audience and make it relatable. There's the "journey" which is usually the hero struggling a LOT to become stronger/better. Then they have a big "crisis/failure". And then they do a "comeback/rise up". This movie straight up jumps the journey and the failure. They just jump the journey. They change the crisis to "slight discomfort" and then they change the big comeback to "no discomfort". As a viewer you have no interest built up, from the start we know exactly everything that's going to happen, which is nothing special. Try to play an RPG where you from the start have all the best gear, the highest level and every skill. Then come tell me how fun of a game it was to walk to the end. The struggle is what people love, people love the "underdog" and they always will, cause the masses are petty.
Because in society these days everyone wants to talk about not the substance of the story, but the woke messages in it. Unfortunately, some think that the more woke something is, the less you need to try for it to be considered good.
@@RedLeif1 A movie made for the CCP is woke o.0 That just doesn't sound right with the massive slaughter and detention of people, to the organ harvesting for wealthy westerners.
The mainstream movie studios just wanna sell stuff that's committee driven to sell as much as possible rather than making a work of art or something interesting. If you want actual good movies, just move away from Disney. Check out the smaller studios making good movies, check out the international film industry or even give animation a try since a lot of animated movies are better than most live action films these days.
It's this damn superficial push to make all stories pander to being "woke" and inclusive to all ideals and persons. Its superficial because its ALL ABOUT MARKETING. It's no longer about sending a message, it's all about that sweet $$$. I WANT MY FUCKING MUSHU!
I feel like people didnt get the memo that Disney said they werent going for the animated movie. They were doing a different tale of Mulan that hasnt been told.
@@Ravenbones even still, every single plot point is there. They followed the story board for the animation, but removed all of the elements that actually made it work and gave it charm, and added in an unnecessary witch subplot along with Disney's interpretation of Chi, which is basically Disney's version of "the force." No training necessary. You can do anything and everything you want for no inexplicable reason. Whether Disney wanted to do something different or not, they copied the storyboard of the original, and added in a bunch of unnecessary filler, as if trying to reach a "differentiation" quota, rather than trying to do things different out of actually wanting to tell a unique story (which is an even clearer indication that they added these elements for no other reason than to appeal to the Chinese government). And what's more, the original storyboard was made with music in mind, with music being the defining bond between scenes and events. You can't remove it and hope to have the same story. The entire thing had to be thrown out, and the movie had to be completely original. Instead, they went with the storyboard and whatever changes they made were so underdeveloped that the narrator had to literally step in halfway through the movie and tell us what should have been the payoff for a well-developed conflict. We got 2 scenes showing Mulan's shame in the lie, not helped by such wooden acting, and then the narrator to tell us she had had enough. The movie was just contrived garbage. It had none of the connecting techniques, none of the charm and flow that the original had (despite Disney wanting to copy it with some alterations), and whatever they did add was so underdeveloped that it stuck out of the rest of the story like a sore thumb, noticeably forcibly inserted, not interwoven
I was looking forward to a “historically accurate” take on Mulan... obviously this was not it 😑 they took out the “magical” elements for.... more magical elements??? WTF DISNEY 🤦🏻♀️
the term "historically correct" got me excited as well. Thought we'd get a more realistic glimpse of chinese culture, lifestyle and traditions and what impact war can have. Instead we got a witch lady, barely a phoenix and jedi powers...
Just look at their 4 credited writers, all of them aren't even asian much less chinese. Which wouldn't matter, if they had did their homework but boy did they butcher up a classic. Some entitled western tweeters might tell their peers "this movie was not made for Western tastes" so don't judge. But anyone with any asian connection will tell you this is movie wasn't made for anyone's taste. My gf and sister never got along but this movie united them in hatred for destroying their childhood empowerment story.
Same I wanted a realistic and thoughtful tale, not this character super power garbage and witch villain. The original annimation is still a masterpiece.
Still don't understand why people still trust Disney. They messed up Alladin, the Lion King, and now Mulan. Every remake they do is inferior with the heart and soul removed
they’ve done a lot right, but lots of misses just like every single other movie production studio the Last Jedi, Infinity War and Endgame are creative works of art, they will end up being the classic movies that define our era decades from now don’t like their movies then don’t go see them, until these remakes aren’t profitable they will keep making them.....also, Aladdin was great and something different from the animation , improved the story in many ways
Hats off for Disney. They introduced all of these changes in a movie loved by Western audiences to cater to the Chinese market and they managed to please neither.
Tommy Lei 雷 yeah I mean if it was a new movie it would be understandable bu since e original was made and brung into us it hurts us a little and you too
@Tommy Lei 雷 Gongli being punished for being a witch makes no sense. Anti-witch sentiment is a European Christian thing. The costumes were also kind of odd and the architectural settings seem out of place. The round buildings called 'tulou' in the movie were found in Southern China (Mulan takes place in Northern China) and tulous wasn't even a thing yet
The thing is, in their attempt to make this movie more "woke" they ruined the positive female protagonist. In the original, Mulan was a normal girl who was being true to herself and by sheer determination and smarts, she prevails and saves China. In the remake, Mulan is not a normal girl, she was born with supernatural powers. So it wasn't what she chose to be, it was who she was born to me. This RUINS the positive message to children everywhere, but more especially the girls. The original: "Girls, you can be just as good as the boys if you try hard and use your head!" The Remake: "Girls, you can only be as good as the boys if you're magic!"
Mulan doesn’t have supernatural powers in the new film, she’s just gifted (albeit a little too much with cgi) but the whole message of the film is everyone is gifted in their own way and you shouldn’t hide from those gifts. In Mulans case her gift was her strategical sharpness that makes her a formidable foe to anyone .
Adam Moore exactly. If the message was “All girls could save China.” it would be disingenuous. The message of the remake was “Be true to who you really are.” Not everyone is gifted like Mulan, but do use your gifts to honor your family and help those you care about.
@@Adam-xb8xh strategical sharpness? I jist finished the movie and I don't think this phrase appeared in any point of the movie to describe Mulan. I am a Chinese and I read bunch of chinese kingfu and chi related novels, and none of them have this kind of setting where only some of them have chi or chi is forbidden. For one it makes her lighter so she can move around easier, for 2 she has amazing reflexes and the armor can very well and easily get in the way of that and be more of a hindrance than help.
Spoiler. But the part where there training and in remake they carry water up the hill, no one can do it but her which showed what? That a girl is stronger?? But In the Original they had to climb a pole and get the arrow. Her being a woman she sees a different strategy then the men, which was great. Her having another strength then the men at the time.
@@solinvictus2045 The funniest thing about this movie is that people holding different political views can find different reasons to hate this movie. AlleluiaElizabeth it’s Disney man, they always find a way usually unnecessarily combining elements of different characters to make a new one that is somehow blander than a middle school lunch
Apparently Chinese test audiences heavily objected to a point of the movie where Mulan and the love interest kissed. Not sure if that was Shang, but yeah, blame Disney and China (I do). I’m not watching this movie.
OG Mulan: A beautiful girl that plunges herself into a very harsh training with an all male platoon, which eventually she conquers and gets recognition for her efforts. nu-Mulan: A beautiful girl that already has power, ability, and skills that makes her powerful but is forced to keep it in check due to plot. One is about progression, the other is about suppression. One is inclusion through merit-based recognition, the other is exclusion due to fear of sticking out.
That sounds awfully familiar to another Disney IP where the original had a hero who starts of inexperienced and throughout the trilogy grows to be a wise experienced fighter but the new one stars a hero who is good at everything from the start
Funnily enough, the original story of Mulan (called the "Ballad of Mulan") actually does have Mulan be trained in fighting, archery, and sword fighting by the time she enlists in the army. But this is in great contrast to her first depiction in the story, which is her in front of a loom (considered a feminine symbol). So basically, the original story still shows Mulan focusing on getting the job done and saving her father whilst contrasting traditional feminine roles (symbolized by the loom). A much more respectable premise than how they try to force the "girl power, fighting traditional feminine stereotypes" message down our throats in most movies nowadays, I'd say.
“I expected nothing, and I’m still let down”. It’s clear that Disney doesn’t understand its own movies, but as long as they keep making money they keep butchering their movies.
I like how Disney wanted this movie to be realistic but they literally had a scene where the main bad guy catches an arrow right to his face while riding on a horse then the bad guy and his henchmen jump off horses and climb up walls using only their feet great job Disney for making it realistic! 🤦♂️
I watched Avatar back when it aired in 2005 and it irritates me how people are acting like it's a new show. Yes, I really like the show and it's in my top 10 cartoons of the early 2000's but c'mon, it's getting a little annoying with all this trending stuff. I'm happy that there's new fans for the show but it can just be a bit irritating.
"It kinda felt like doing Aladdin without the Genie" EXACTLY! Like you said, not quite to that level of egregious dumb fuckery but same end result overall.
So, I just watched the Mulan 2020 movie. This will have spoilers so be warned. Now, this is going to be an unbiased review, where I will ignore the fact that the main actress supports police brutality in Hong Kong. So what do I think of this movie? If I could describe one word to this movie, its that it is very Soulless. The only character that I genuinely liked was Donnie yen of course. Now, to get to the meat of this movie on why it felt soulless, let’s look at what the animated movie had. Mushu. The Exclusion of important characters. Mushu to Mulan was like what the Genie was to Aladdin. or Timon and Pumba was to Lion King Yeah, Aladdin and Simba were the main characters. But what made the movie went from “good” to near masterpiece was because of Genie, timon and Pumba. Their charming personalities and wacky content made the movies they were in from “good” to near masterpiece. If those characters werent in the movie, then the movies probably wouldnt be well-liked. Same with Mushu. Mushu brought the spark and energy that Mulan needed, which is why Mulan is genuinely a great film. Now, I understand that this movie is trying to be a movie about the real Mulan, and not the animated Mulan. But….. it has the same story elements as the animated Mulan. This movie is like a combination of the 2009 Chinese Mulan movie, and the Mulan cartoon. As a result it feels weird. Mushu, a great and likeable character, turns into…. a phoenix that acts as a map for Mulan. This movie also did not have Captain Li Shang from the animated movie. Li Shang was probably my favorite character. He was the perfect example of a male side character in a female led character done right. He was developed, had a likeable personality, and was very charismatic. Li Shang was split into two people, but those characters were kind of boring. The second problem with this movie is 2. The Lack of Music Now, i understand the director wanting to make it realistic, after all warriors dont just randomly sing out of nowhere. However, the problem with this is that the movie was boring. I am sorry, but like I said, this movie is trying very hard to be accurate to the real Mulan story, and seemingly copies the 2009 mulan movie in china. But this movie also tries to lighten the tone and just slap a Disney label on it. See, the 2009 Mulan movie is actually more accurate imo. But when I was watching this movie and seeing how this movie is trying to resemble like the original animated movie, I got bored and realized part of my boredom was that there were no songs. I think what made the live action movies remakes at least more bearable to watch were the songs because it could keep me interested. This movie doesnt have the Who I am song. But most importantly, it does not have the top 5 best Disney songs of all time “I’ll Make a man out of you.” Finally, the reason why this movie wasnt good 3. The villains The animated mulan movie had a villain name Shan Yu. The villain was not developed, but he was menacing. Seriously, the animated movie had darker themes than the live action. In the live action, heres the problem. There are two villains. What made Shan yu threatening and menacing was that he was the main villain. But in this movie, we get two villains, and as a result the villains dont feel developed or memorable. Seriously. this woman sides with Mulan in the end because she’s “a woman” or “Female empowerment.” or something. Like no offense, but if you’re going to betray your partner for the opponent simply because the opponent is a “woman”…. that’s not going to be satisfying. One more thing. 4. Mulan This is really personal. Because believe it or not, Mulan is my favorite Disney princess. No, its not because she’s Asian. Mulan was my favorite because she ws relatable. She was the underdog. Mulan was one of hte few characters who had flaws and lost battles. But she did whine and complain like a good girl? No, she sucked it up, overcame many challenges and became a worthy warrior. She proved that she didnt need to have masculine features to be a warrior, all it take was hard work and perserverance to achieve greatness. So what did this live action do? Well, it made Mulan the Chosen One. So what happened was they turned Mulan, a beloved Disney princess into a Mary Sue for their live action movies, like rey from star wars. Mulan in the live-action is nearly perfect, she succeeds almost all the time. She is the Chosen One, she is destined to defeat the bad guy. When you tell me it was her destiny to defeat an invading army, I am sorry but I lose interest in the character. In conclusion, this movie wasn’t memorable. It was boring. I am officially over the live action hype train. No, its not because its led by a female individual. Its because this movie felt boring or souless. It was way too long, didnt have heart in it. This movie didnt have any memorable characters, dialogue too long, and lack of developing villains. Review for this movie: 4 out of 10.
You bet your ass. Before all this woke garbage infested pop culture, it was just a catchy song that the audience could sing along to. Nowadays some snowflake will get triggered and write an article slamming it as an endorsement of toxic masculinity or what have you.

@Dylan Sharp true, this is in the end just a lot of wasted money and time, but maybe some other films wil come out. But its gonna have a negative impact on hollywood and the movie industry.
Black Ninja exactly! Ironically Will was the only good thing about Aladdin, (after all the genie backlash). The other actors were so boring and the set design was horrible too, you could tell it was shot somewhere in the Disney backlot. So below average, they didn’t put any effort into anything!!
I have been thinking the same thing, ever since Disney announced this movie. The Chinese movie was great and the ending feels more appropriate for the plot. For anyone wondering I believe it is still available on RU-vid. The video quality is not great, but it is worth a watch. The effects of war are realistic.
This is seriously a bad movie. Even as a movie, it fails at so many basic aspects required to make a film that it makes the filmmakers seem extremely incompetent.
“Disney does exactly what you think Disney would do for the live action Mulan.” I thought that was gonna happen with this movie when I saw the trailer (a little bit of me hoped it wouldn’t have happened) but I knew
Yeah there just going for a money grap, not actually trying to make a good movie, I think they say well we have the MCU if we put some effort into that then we can fudge everything else unless it is Toy Story
@@savannahcrowley4299 He is just upset that unlike the audience who was putting their expectation based on the animated movie and the critics judged it as a separate movie that they thought the visuals were good, the action was descent and the acting was descent thus a positive review as you would expect
aaron rumph agreed. I watched the movie with an open mind and I enjoyed it - and this is coming from someone who LOVES the animated Mulan. It did it’s job with honoring the animated, but made it more “realistic”, aside from the witch lol but witches have been in Chinese tales since forever.
@@savannahcrowley4299 As with all the live action remakes none have really been bad (outside of Dumbo) just kind of a movie that you don't really care to watch multiple times
Quotes from reddit comments: The actor who plays Mulan has in several instances voiced the support of the Chinese Communist Party. She also spoke out on the Hong Kong protestors condemning their actions. That’s the reason why, among many things, people are upset with the movie. It's even worse when you realise that she is also a naturalised American citizen. Saying that others are not allowed the same democratic rights and freedoms that she enjoys as a U.S citizen is massively hypocritical
Jeremy: Her father has no sons My brain, immediately: “My father has no sons so IM the one who has to social climb for one, cus I’m the oldest n the wittiest n the gossip in New York City is Insidious...
Took her from being a real strong female character with heart, personality, vulnerability, and an iron will to being an uninteresting Mary Sue. Why am I not surprised?
Disney: We got rid of the talking animal sidekicks because we wanted the live action version to be more grounded in reality. Also Disney: Shapeshifting hawk witch and gravity-defying wall-running.
Wait im confused, some people didn’t like the lion kind because nothing changed its pretty much a copy paste of of the cartoon version, but now people are getting pissed because they changed things from the cartoon version, what is it that people want exactly?
Just to make this more horrible, the original Mulan folklore had no witch. It actually didn't have a villain at all. It focuses more on the hardship she had to endure for her family while hiding her identity. If you want dark, gritty & realistic, the original folklore is the most. And I really wanted to see that aspect. But noooooooooooo they had to go the dumbass route. Jeremy, Boys season 2 is out, hope you're enjoying it right now.
This would've made it for Mulan 2020. It would've been a different side of the story, a more drama-centric story with action and epic on the side. I could only imagine how more impactful it could've been. Instead, we got this same re-hashed "Chosen One" trope.
shaburanigud I mean if they weren’t going to have Mushu, stick with that. It would’ve been moving to see the emotional depth between her family, her community and her decision
T H That is the message of the Disney animated movie. The original poem purpose is solely filial piety. That is why the story is taught to Chinese kids
With the amount of money that Disney has, it is so sad that they release such low quality movies. They have all the resources yet these movies are done lazily. They’re clearly sloppy money-grabs.
well they have a writing team that all graduated from the same school of writing - and it was a postmodern indoctrination to be good little social activists blinded by a totalitarian ideology. Plus they are nothing more than prostitutes for that $$
It was preying on nostalgia. They figured the original audience would come back because it was called 'Mulan' and they thought they could sell it to a new audience by making it 'not-Mulan'. Or at least...not the Mulan people were wanting or expecting.
Yet people pay for these dumb movies and when Disney sees billions in returns for these movies, why would they bother making better films when they can love on nostalgia and pump out lame remakes?
I remember when the director said something like "the movie will not have any singing, people didn't sing going to war, that's not realistic".. NO, BUT A WITCH HAWK LADY?? YEAH THATS PRETTY MUCH HISTORICALLY ACCURATE! If you think about it, even the animation is way more realistic than this movie, there are some theories explaining Mushu as Mulan's own imaginary friend that helps her keeping it together.
Umm sailors were known for singing into the sea, Viking would constantly sing while fighting and Greek muses souls sing men into battle. Screw off with people don’t sing into war
I gave it a 2. It's not close to being good as the 1998 Mulan nor the live action Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Also the way it's presented is lacking that "movie feel". It felt like I was watching a long and boring tv series.
The more of these remakes Disney churns out, the more I just think - Imagine loving a Disney movie with all your heart, growing up loving that movie, having it be so near and dear to your heart, and THEN as a working adult years down the line you get a chance to be a part of it when they announce a new official project directly tied to this thing that's almost a part of you because it helped you grow into the person you are today. Imagine that joy and excitement. Pouring that love into every detail you have your hands on. Then imagine the end result just completely overshadowing all of your hard work. I'd be crushed. I first had this thought watching Beauty and the Beast - so many things I could see on screen were just so damn wonderously lovely; the set design, the wardrobe, all the craftsmanship in the details... only for whoever is in charge of knitting it all together and/or the actors on-screen to just drop the ball so hard that so many of our impressions of the whole thing suffered. I got CHILLS when I saw what happened to the Artemis Fowl project as well. They build these adaptations on the backs of folks who love these works with all their hearts, only to leave us with a final product that somehow lacks any heart at all. It's horrifying. To all folks behind the scenes who poured their heart and souls into making these movies look so damn beautiful, I salute you.
Michelle Favre that’s the problem y’all are fine with ppl having an opinion on Chinese communism but when it’s Italian fascism everyone screams and tries to get you banned
They’ll likely stop once Bob Iger steps down as CEO of Disney and someone who doesn’t lean too much on the business side of show business and is a good balance between showmanship and business takes charge
Phil Ingrouille maybe they’ll finally do a Black Cauldron remake...you know? The one animated Disney film that actually warrants a remake considering that the original was kind of underwhelming
The characters were so bland, the interactions stale, and the dialogue at times cringe-worthy. Mostly, it was boring, I just couldn't bring myself to care about anyone (I did like Mulan's parents, especially the mom)
Just from what I have heard second-hand, this movie only wants to do one thing: pander. Removing Wushu for realism is fine and all, but then to have a witch smells of wuxia influence. And apparently Mulan was amazing from the start? Why? When? Isn’t the whole point of her legend was that she was just an ordinary woman?
Mulan wasn't just amazing from the start, she now has super powers! Because obviously a woman could never become a skilled warrior without having mystical powers..
Now I have heard from some other comments about the original ballad/story of Mulan, and that she had amazing martial arts skills from the start and that helped with the ruse because no men would expect a woman to be good at martial arts. Now, if you want to be inclusive and emphasize equality, wouldn’t the animated movie’s approach be better? I get some people’s opinion that bringing her down to normal might not be faithful to the source material and make her less impressive; but I would argue that making her a born badass actually implicitly asserts that “only truly impressive women can be as good as or better than men”.
They took it out because the dragon was sacred in Chinese culture. Disney tried to respect the culture the story originated from and they could not just have it joking around. Asian people actually appreciated this decision.
I liked Aladdin live action to an extent as well, probably because of the soundtrack. And Beauty and the Beast but because of Lefou and Gaston mainly. And Jungle Book live action's tone is what exactly I'm looking for.
Pete's Dragon, Christopher Robin, 101 Dalmatians and Alice in Wonderland aka the good live action remake films for me. I'll stick with 1998 cartoon movie version whose I grew up with.
No Mushu, no ancestors, no Cricket, no songs, no Shang - basically a stripped down, mutilated version of Mulan. As if they believed that any of these things made her less of a woman, or less strong. Absolutely ridiculous.
It actually does not make sense to cut hair. In ancient China, both man and women keep long hair. The difference is women's hair are styled differently.
Disney works with people who are technically incredible and competent but fails to hire competent writers. They are more about the look than the content.
