Step by step guide on how to mulch like a pro!
Pro Tips:
1) Round up any weeds at least 3 days before you plan to spread the mulch. This will eliminate so many of the future weeds from even germinating it is not even funny!
2)Get a steel spade instead of a cheap wooden spade. You will thank me! Quit being so cheap! Spending money on things that make jobs go faster and strain your employees less are GOOD investments.
3)Get a full-size pitchfork to scoop your mulch. There is just no other way to efficiently scoop mulch. A scoop shovel works great for the last little bit.
Mulch Tutorial:
Weeding/Edging - Before Any Mulch is Laid
Prune anything in need and weed beds before edging. This will keep the dirt out of our yard waste. Picking up dirt mixed in with your plant clippings is not fun and this will also cause the local yard waste dump site to not accept your debris. Collect weeds and clippings in a bag or tarp. Any border the mulch has with rocks or concrete will need to be scraped back. Any grass border needs to be edged with a shovel 3-5 inches deep. We want our edges clean, neat, and straight. Use a string trimmer to snap a line down before cutting in your edge. MAKE SURE no mulch or dirt is left in the grass before you begin laying mulch. By hand, clean out the edge of any loose debris. Blow everything back into the beds before beginning to mulch, including debris built up along parking lot edge. Break up all dirt clumps and spread them out evenly, so when you begin to mulch you don’t have to mess with them anymore.
Pre-Emergent - Spread the pre-emergent by hand over any area that is to be mulched.
Spreading Mulch
Load up all wheel barrels at the same time. Don’t mulch yourself into a corner. We need an even coat of mulch 1.5 to 2 inches over all the beds. NO CLUMPS OF MULCH! NO MULCH IN THE GRASS.
When finished mulching…tamp all edges with a hard rake. Carefully blow any mulch off the concrete back into the beds.
WHEN COMPLETE. Make sure the area around the trailer is all cleaned up. If you moved the truck and trailer during the job make sure all loading areas are cleaned up.
Make sure we have all of our tools and get to the next job.
Break Down:
1 - Prune and clean up before doing any digging or edging.
2- Edge beds and scrap back concrete borders. Pull weeds not too.
3- Even out clumps left from edging and grade your edge into the bed.
4- Blow any dirt/mulch back into beds from all sides (e.i. parking lot too) Clean out your edge!
5- Pre-M - Make sure all beds are hit!
6- Spread mulch -DO NOT GET MULCH IN THE GRASS
7- Move truck and trailer as needed - clean each spot as you go
8 - Tamp all edges
9- Blow everything off one more time
10 - Double check work

I always appreciate a great mulch job. You definitely do a great job going into detail on how to do what you do. Mulching makes beds look so clean! I love it! I totally understand that for aesthetic purposes why you don’t lay it too deep, but a good 2-3 inch layer is ideal in the garden. There are many useful features in laying wood mulch; weed suppression, retaining moisture, and aesthetic as you mentioned. There is also the fact that as the mulch breaks down it adds that organic matter for earthworms and other beneficial organisms in the soil. The white fungus that ends up growing on the under layers is also very beneficial to the soil and plants that are in the beds. Though, for commercial purposes I understand how it wouldn’t be aesthetic. Great job though! I definitely learned how to cut in the grass around the border like that. I’ve always used bricks or pavers as the borders. Which can be a nightmare when you end up having to cut the grass 😂.

We're retired 25 years in Ft. Myers, Florida installing colored and natural mulch and compost. Here in Florida we install 100 yd semi-trailer load with wheelbarrels, pitchfork to spead shredded pine mulch in up to 30 resident or muli-condos in a gated community, in one day. We also installed décor rocks of several varieties, are last job was 4 railroad cars, 100 ton per car. That took 3 weeks with 7 workers. This video say Aug. when it rains everyday in Aug. so, our season starts October when Florida is Spring like.for 3-4 months. Good Luck, we had a ball and retirement is great. REMULCH

Hey Eric. Thanks for sharing. I didn't spend too much time playing around with those methods. I thought they were less efficient and used more mulch than needed, but I do still see companies doing it that way all the time. Another thing they are doing around here is using garbage cans instead of wheel barrows...that way doesn't really make any sense at all to me. "long spade" is def a good way to describe the shovel, but the that variant of shovel would be more commonly referred to as a "trenching shovel" for digging narrow ditches. They are useful for so many lawn/construction apps. THANK YOU for the video !!

Great video explaining the best techniques of mulching. The only thing I would like to add is that before mulching it is best to clean up the edges first to give them a smoother flow for easier mowing and a more natural appearance. The sharp curves at the corners near the sidewalks do not make for easy maneuvering of a mower along the edge. Also the curve around the large area where the small tree is located would look better if it was more rounded. Rounding and widening the arcs of curves gives a much gentler flow for easy mowing and provides for a much more aesthtically pleasing appearance.

Hey Scott. I like where your head is at! Love hearing people really putting some thought into how they go about performing the lawn and landscape tasks. All the best - Ryan

Thank you so much! I'm 15 starting my first job on landscaping and I wasn't experienced at all. I did alright but I didn't know how to put mulch as good as the owner of the landscaping did. This will definitely help out a lot.

Nice!!! That sounds like me when I got started! Have fun with it. I looked at it like I got to work out every day for money when I was younger. You can seriously make a lot of money in the lawn and landscape industry especially if you learn how it works at a really young best. My first day was prepping an overgrown bank's landscape for mulch...almost quit!!! That would have been dumb! All the best - Ryan

Excellent tips! Thanks for the video. I love to watch someone who takes great pride in their work. What's the best way to maintain the edge without getting grass seed or foreign material into the bed? My weedeater throws material everywhere!
@LawnCrack
@LawnCrack 5 лет назад
Thanks so much Robert. My pleasure. I am assuming this is after the bed has been mulched and you are mowing the lawn. I don't know if there is a way to keep it all out! My best advice would be to make sure the end of your trimmer string is not hitting the soil surface...get it at the perfect height so only the overhanging blades could possibly end up in the bed. Then, when complete with your mowing and trimming, run around the bed edges with with your blower on idle to spread those clipping out without disturbing the mulch too much if at all. In my experience, if not too much gets in the beds and you blow it around a little, it will be looking 100% again within a day or two max.

I think the drain should extend past the mulch line as the water will create a channel and begin to erode the lines. However looks really really good.

Very informative video!! Just got my first house. Excited to lay mulch this spring. Couldn’t figure out if I should spray the dirt or use the landscape fabric? (Beginner)
@LawnCrack
@LawnCrack 5 лет назад
I strongly recommend to NOT use any type of fabric under mulch. The mulch is going to break down over time and weeds will grow from on top of it...this starts end of year 1! If you are using a decorative rock as your 'mulch' then I do recommend it so your rocks and soil beneath don't mesh over time. If you are OK with using a non-selective herbicide (aka round-up...I never used round-up personally as it is severely over priced...) then I would recommend to spray it once or twice a week or two or both before you plan on installing the mulch. Then, if and when weeds still pop through, just stay on top of it at the beginning. If you don't let them get out of control, you will be golden for years to come. Best of luck! Have fun!

@@LawnCrack do you know a good product to buy that kills grass? I did the mulch and all but now I have done grass trying to get through. Before I go to Lowe's, I thought I'd ask
@LawnCrack
@LawnCrack 5 лет назад
@@aaronreed5754 What I did was buy the commercial product with the same active ingredients 2.5 gallons at a time in concentrate. This would make something like 65 gallons of 'round up.' And only cost like $60 bucks. Then you just need a hand-can, I recommend getting 2-gallon Ace Hardware brand, for like $13 bucks and water. BOOM - Cheap ass 'round up' for a long time! I was using Ranger Pro. That's the name of the product.

Great step-by-step how-to here, what's your opinion on the best way to mulch around a tree? Soil first layer...then 2-3" mulch...would you not recommend using any tarp/fabric? I'm trying to keep the weeds/grass from growing in the mulch ring and it seems nearly impossible. I like to think my grass is just "that good", because it can grow anywhere! lol
@LawnCrack
@LawnCrack 6 лет назад
Thanks for the comment. I should make a video on that topic! I am not a fan of a tarp or weed barrier under mulch...under rock, I like it. It seems over just a couple years the mulch breaks down on top of the tarp and you once again are back to square one. In my experience, if you stay on top of weeds early in the season by pulling or spraying them, they become much less of an issue going into the future. I have never used SnapShot but I have heard it is the best Pre-M for beds around. It is expensive, but I think it is because it works. I like to use my shovel as a measuring tool and get a perfect circle around the tree, then cut in the grade, grade it out, and install the mulch. The big thing to me to remember when doing tree rings is to not let the edgings or mulch build up on the bark at the base of the tree. I see it happen a lot and that is a great way to kill a tree! Do you a rhizomatous turf where you are? We have primarily fescue here and it doesn't really spread like that into beds...

please emphasize the importance of keeping mulch several inches away from the tree trunk. (also, stems on plants/shrubs)
