From a maintenance perspective, I wish more landscapers pushed rock vs mulch in my area. Soo much easier to clean the clippings out of the beds as long as the rocks are big enough to not get blown around. Thanks for the video. 👍

Just started your video and already agree 100%! My husband and I are getting rid of all mulched bed's and replacing with river rock, for all the reason's you stated and then some! We had/have Orkin now due to an ant situation and found we also have other critter's, small snake's, wood spider's, rodent's etc all because of the mulch! We'd re-done a 25x25 ft patio with river rock last year and we love it! Everyone else does too and the best part, NO maintainance!!!!!! Thank you. now I have to finish your video :)

Agreed! In our old house we had these huge mulch gardens with trees and plants. The worst was the leaves in the fall because cleaning was hard with raking and leaf blowing ugh. Also 3-4 trips to Home Depot to buy mulch for refreshing each time. In our new house we did river rock and I couldn’t be happier.

@@186bingo Yeah, what a difference :) Now my best friend and her husband are doing the same! They just had all the river rock delivered in fact.

I put decomposed Granite on top of weed fabric then rocks on top. Keeps weeds out better

Ive got a mulched 'Australian natives' garden. Now getting to the stage where it could potentially do with a 'mulch topup'. Way cheaper than rocks! As for comments about weeds, yeah sure, there's weeds sometimes, but I find after rain the soil is soft and pulling them is too easy! For more stubborn weeds, careful use with a sprayer and 'roundup' ends them!!

Love the concept! Great work. ....just wonder if there was another color option for the rock to better co-ordinate with the rock edging?
@nickenslandscapingexcavating
Thanks Kim! There are dozens of rock colors/styles. This is just the rock the customer selected for their project 👍🏼

Man I hate my rock beds... I am switching to mulch this year. As soon as your landscape fabric fails 10 years from installation you have weeks everywhere and the only way to fix it is to take all the rock out and put in new fabric. Also the mulch actually feeds the soil and keeps it moist, I can just bring in some new mulch and boom, no more weeds.
@JWEX500

The right rocks look way much better than mulch. Mulch beds just look cheap.
@jaysmith7774
@jaysmith7774 3 года назад
Here's what i do.... Step 1. Spend 30 min every month torching the weeds w/ flame thrower. Make sure you wet all beds first w/ garden hose. Only need to hold flame over weed for 1-2 sec. Step 2. Paint the mulch once it fades...(once per year if dye is mixed strong). Avoid getting dye on concrete...keeping concrete wet will prevent overspray stains. Thats it.....Done

Is it against the landscaping law to just put the rock on top of the mulch???
@nickenslandscapingexcavating
@nickenslandscapingexcavating 3 года назад
Yes it is, it will work temporarily but both will have to be removed eventually.

It would have been better looking with bigger river rocks. I only like small areas of the garden with bigger rocks.

Which fabric you recommend? Should I use Non Woven 5 oz fabric or 3.2?
@nickenslandscapingexcavating
We use woven 4.1 oz for our rock beds.

I'm a new homeowner and I have lava rock but it looks thinned out and now weeds are coming up in certain spots, do I need to have the whole thing redone or just out down more rock in the thin spots

Can you do this in the fall?
@nickenslandscapingexcavating
Yes, you can do this anytime of year.
@southbridgeforestHOA
@southbridgeforestHOA 2 года назад
just wait 2 years, those leaves will fall down, get between the rocks and turn into a mess of dirt. rock is only low maintenance if it's in an area without leaves that can fall ontop.
@nickenslandscapingexcavating
If you clean up the leaves annually when they fall (like you should) this will not happen. I’ve been maintaining landscapes for over 10 years, I know how this works
@kylebarrow1010
@kylebarrow1010 5 лет назад
But is it really low maintenance? Just wait till the dirt sets in to the rock and no way to clean it all out
@Suuuuhhhbruh0120
@Suuuuhhhbruh0120 5 лет назад
The dirt sits below the rock.. That's why you go a few inches deep. I've never had dirt set in to rock. Edging can be a pain if you don't edge regularly or install some type of stone edging.
@kylebarrow1010
@kylebarrow1010 5 лет назад
I’m not saying you see the dirt but you still get the weed problem
@kylebarrow1010
@kylebarrow1010 5 лет назад
Paul Robinson that’s not what I’m saying. Go dig rock out that has been installed 3 years ago at the bottom of rock on top of the fabric there will be a layer of crud for weeds to grow in... I install rock too... my point is that mulch is much easier to freshen and and control the weeds after the rock has been installed for x number of years. Obviously snapshot helps with the weeds. But my point is rock is not 100% low maintenance in many cases I see it turn into a maintenance nightmare 5-10 years down the road. I’m raising the question if it is actually lower maintenance long term than mulch...
@JoeBlow-24
@JoeBlow-24 4 года назад
@@kylebarrow1010 Rock jobs always turn into nightmares, there is no faster way to freshen up a property than new mulch. Quality mulch in Michigan lasts 2 seasons, these guys are instaling dyed shit you buy from home depot that is made from ground up pallets. Rocks, outside of desert conditions will settle and fill with soil and become far more unmanageable. These guys who don't agree simply don't have the experience under their belts to know any better.
@MNhockeydude35
@MNhockeydude35 4 года назад
No its not, I am redoing 5 large rock beds and it is an insane amount of work. I have weeds coming up everywhere, it sucks to place new plants in, you dig up the rock, dirt comes with it, and now you have dirt on top of your rock. You also cannot add any compost to your soil... I would never go with rock... I am in more of a rural area and I don't mind adding a little mulch every once in a while, looks brand new...

Plucking weeds out of rock is no fun but rock does look better
@nickenslandscapingexcavating
A good fabric and a maintenance route takes care of that.

I would think you would sell your customers on mulch a lot more. Seeing as they will be coming back to you year after year once the mulch fade away. More $$$ for you, right!?!?
@audnbob1
@audnbob1 3 года назад
I'd prefer customer satisfaction over $$$ because, 'word gets around' and that's going to get you more work and happier customer's in the end I believe. I started a housekeeping business over 20 yrs ago and that's exactly what happened. I never advertised once and had to turn work away because I had as many customer's as I could handle. It was the quality of my work and competitive price that had one person telling the next and so on,.......I just retired at 54 :)

To bad there was no detail of actually taking mulch out or putting stone in. Not helpful at all. Real disappointed. Had hoped to actually see how to

Next time it would be more helpful if you recorded the work in the side where people are working, and not the other side where you just show a patch of grass.
