Mulholland Snake 2 years after the Woolsey Fire

The Famous Snake on Mulholland in the Malibu hills was a magnet for motorcycle and sport car enthusiasts for many years but when the "Woolsey Fire" blew through in Jan. of 2019' it ravaged the area. The road ended up closing and has not been open to motor traffic since but foot and bicycle traffic is still permitted.
Over the years before the fire, more restrictions were implemented to discourage "Shenanigans" to save lives and keep people from hurting themselves. They limited spectator parking and there is no more parking along any part of the famed 10 turns like it was years ago. Riders would dragging knee and show off to spectators and photogs taking pics and video. I did it a few times with a Harley, now I do it with drones. This time with a 5" and a gopro to rip it like I haven't before. A fight to honor all those riders that can't ride the Snake anymore or to those that never had the chance and never will. It was as hard to fly it as it is to ride it. the elevation change made it challenging going both ways!

funny- I was just theorizing on how such a large chunk of road suddenly collapsed. My theory is that unlike other landslides, this one happened at the juncture of the rock overhang. I'm thinking that made for a good waterfall rock. With the amounts of water that may have cascaded over the rock, the road couldn't take the overload of waterweight. It had already been stressed by the earlier fires and hadn't been touched or maintained at all in over 6 years. So, my take is that the rain falling off the rock caused the slide that took out the pavement. Just a theory...

Just rode up this on my mountain e-bike. Woolsey Fire decimated the area into a moonscape. Just as soon as they were about to re-open it, the 2024 early rains took out a huge section of road just under the rock overhang curve. I was not prepared for that. A gigantic chunk of pavement was just gone . Cyclists found a way to get around it on a side ridge. I have photos if you want 'em. Quite a disaster. Wonder how long it will take them to fix. First they have to get some major truckloads of fill-dirt up there on narrow winding roads. Then, they have to fill it, level it, compress it and pave over it. What a process! I predict over a year of work. Lot of $ involved. Great for us walkers and cyclists though. Lots of quiet and safe passage without the bikes and cars. (sorry bikers!!) The Snake sure has seen a lot of natural events!! Thanks for the drone footage. Well-filmed!

Thank you for your informative comment. Been there a few times after the fire but not after the flood. Too bad they're not going to be able to reopen it for a while. I'll have to go there again. It's strange to hear birds wings flap and make noise when we couldn't hear it before.

Thx Don! This place used to have bikes racing back and forth so me filming riders with a drone wasn't the worst thing going on. Now I have the place to ourselves. Kind of weird not hearing the sound of reving motorcycles. Thx for the visit and comment bud!👍

This adventure took us back to those days when sportbikes with loud pipes would race back and forth and today you could hear crickets, so strange to be there like that but it was fun. We had the place to ourselves.

Yeah lol. Sorry for not knowing a better word to use but I was there back in the day when you could park under the big tree for shade from the summer's sun. Couldn't have a conversation without yelling because it was too loud talk. No stock pipes anywhere. Seeing Ken and Paul standing at the corner almost every weekend. Yeah shenanigans is actually fitting and non incriminating.😉

@@oneonlyxram I've noticed that you started flying drones a few years back and that the aerial perspectives helped your channel. In the meantime I started flying fpv and it is or can be extremely exciting. Especially this place and cutting lines on the ride and swooping down to the road below. Like a roller coaster without the tracks. One sensation is like to go over a big jump and go high in the air like the trajectory of a dirt bike going over a huge double or triple. The feeling is so intense it's like I feel the weightlessness. Supper neat. If you ever get board with what your doing, unlikely lol. Give fpv a try, have the Toad help you out. There was a fire about 2 years ago that swept through the area. There are only few homes in that area and they have access but the road remains closed and I believe that they're not reopening due to all the illegal activities that took place on these few turns. Made it real nice to fly it tho.
