I ride a KTM dirt bike and motos have been mixing up the wheels for years. I’ve got 18” in the rear and 21” on the front. Great for wheelies, rolling big obstacles, sliding through corners, and flipping it around in the air. Hoping to get a mullet MTB soon!

I’ve got a ‘18 Siskiu N 29r, it came with fairly conservative geo. Chucked on a 27.5, according to an online geo calculator I slackened it by quite a bit and SLAMMED the bb by 14mm. I tried an offset shock bush but my frame didn’t allow it. So I fitted bigger tyres & shorter cranks, now I love it. Now I’ve overcome the pedal strikes It’s so much more flickable in corners & air. It’s so much more fun, less point and squirt. But I can still plough with the big front. I will say, it’s more effort going up. But I have fitted short cranks and a pair of DD max grip shortys so she’s no xc bike.

Thanks for the video. I'm definitely going to get a mullet set up. I have a trail bike 140/150 on 27.5. For me, it's too twitchy. I don't want a full 29er, but this video made more sense than any I've been looking for. I changed up the way I typed my search. Every time I search for "best mullet bike in 2022", it kept showing stuff that I've already seen and was from the big channel reviews. This time I typed," carbon mullet review", and it showed your video. Weird but still, good video. -From Austin Texas, USA 🇺🇸 Edit: April 2023 I just bought a Specialized Stumpjumper Evo Pro which comes stock in mullet, with the ability to go full 29er. Cascade makes a link, and Williams Racing makes a yoke for the mullet. I went with Stumpjumper Evo because of its insane adjustability. I pick it up this Friday!

Just got my mullet set up today and must say it's worth it, especially, if you like to spend time in the air at the park. Also, cornering is a breeze. Whipping left to right is just natural feeling now and doesn't require a lot of thought/technique.

I have just transitioned from a 26" Scott Spark dual XC (2010) to a Polygon Siskiu T8 29" and..... I'm going to have to disagree with you on the 29er being better uphill. Mine is horrendous! Gearing wise it only makes sense that a smaller wheel is going to have better drive when pedalling, because you are putting less effort into rotation, so uphill is always going to be better on the smaller wheel bike (Drive wise). We have a very techy uphill section on a local track and everyone I met out there last time we rode it that had 29ers were cursing it. It was also the first time i have not made it to the top without stopping. In saying that, I do love the videos you are making. Keep up the great work.

26" for life! Also there is no trail out there that warrents the need for big wheels. People are building trails to be roller coasters these days so might as well enjoy the infinite flickablitiy of 26". 29" do go faster (that is just basic physics) but out of the 20+ years of riding I have never stopped and felt like I needed to go bigger. The bike industry is all about creating trends, standards and marketing then changing it all up the next year to sell more crap. Ride what you find works best for you!

Really like your videos and I'm not disagreeing with how you think the bike now handles etc but the flip chip on the Vitus and on almost all bike is NOT designed to run it in mullet setup. Vitus claim approx 6mm BB height change with their flip chip which makes a big difference if for example you ride rocky trails etc. the difference in radius between a 29er tyre and 27.5 is approx 20mm. This is going to drop the BB a lot more than the 6mm a flip chip can adjust. That then lowers your BB an it will shorten the reach so you are correct to say that's shorter. Bikes that genuinely are designed to run either wheel size normally have a different rocker or shock linkage to achieve it. I imagine a big part of why the bike doesn't climb as well is because you will have slackened both the head tube and seat tube angle in putting the smaller rear wheel in even with the flip chip. Obviously it works doing what you have done but that isn't what the geo adjust chips are designed for and it definitely adjust the geo more than the flip chip will compensate. All that said if you prefer the bike overall happy days!

@dit4963
@dit4963 2 года назад
If you are focused on descending, not climbing, then turning a 27.5 bike into a mullet might actually improve the geometry, not ruin it. Especially if you are a short rider and have a bike with a bit longer reach. I did this to my 2018 YT Capra 27 and I am loving it. The HA becomes slacker (many bikes are not slack enough anyway), the BB is raised a bit (I hate the super low BB trend on long travel enduro bikes anyway), reach becomes shorter (hence the longer reach to start with) and the ST becomes slacker...but, as I said, not focused on climbing :)

@Petermcpete
@Petermcpete 2 года назад
Hi Alex, interesting vid and something ive been thinking about as i need a new rear wheel. I get that the reach can shorten but, and i might be missing something, i don't see how changing the wheel size (without a rear axle flip chip) can change the wheelbase of the bike. Aren't the axles still in the same place? do the geometry changes pull the rear axle inwards? Cheers.
@robinclaidlaw
@robinclaidlaw 2 года назад
Just that what was a horizontal line between the axles is now a sloping of the same length. The wheel base is measured horizontally though. So yes, the rear wheel has swung slightly forward as it's dropped down since it has rotated around the front axle.

@roddas26 Chainstay length cannot be changed. Unless you're removing or adding material. I'm not sure what you mean by changing the chainstay "height". Anglesets alter a headangle only a degree which is far of being optimized. Also, it does not change the headtube length.

So. Ive been thinking about doing a mullet but something incant find anyone doing. 26 up front 24 in the rear because free ride downhill rides but. Im already running a suuuper slack 59.7 degree head angle and that is just gonna drop me down even slacker. Now yeah i ride really steep stuff thats why i went so slack in the first place. But i still want to scandi flick without brakes and cutty easier but with brand new tires so ill still have that cornering grip. I just down really know how ill get around making that head angle TOO slack into break risk area. I could drop my crowns as needed but then im loosing travel and ive already bottomed out at full travel so its honestly not even an option. Any press in headsets to make it steeper when the 24 is installed? Or am i at a stand still?

Pretty much to sum up why the top downhill riders are running mullets because it’s more of a dirtbike at this speed than anything and the main reason why all of the others aside a bigger front wheel is ran on a motorcycle is because it keeps the bike way more stable in every single condition, Just my two cents every other factor Definitely a big part I just feel like nobody is touching down on this

@thermonuculur
@thermonuculur 2 года назад
A 29" wheel and fork will typically add 19+10=29mm to the front end if you don't reduce travel. To remain close to the same geo, you'd have to reduce travel by 30mm and that's out of the realm of most setups. (who wants a 130mm front / 160mm rear bike?) Some frames (like Guerilla Gravity's) use a tall or short headtube spacer to enable swapping between front wheel sizes. Folks who experiment will often drop travel 10mm and live with the extra-slack front end, at a penalty of slacker seat angle and loss of some reach. The short story is: do a little research and math before making the plunge.

It went together easily in less than an hour. ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. It's just a fashion. A way to get people to consume more - tell them that the bike they bought last year, for £3000 is 'out of date' - and that they need to buy more 'stuff'. Same with bar width, hub and BB 'standards', wheel sizes, etc. Just keep moving the goal posts, so people keep replacing stuff before it wears out. Large wheels are faster in a straight line; small wheels turn better in tight situations - you can't have the advantages without the disadvantages. The logical solution is to find the best compromise size, and stick it at both ends of the bike. Anything else is just placebo effect.

I was a heavyweight on the wrestling team at just under 6 foot so I was Better Built for Judo and MMA than mountain biking but I stuck with it anyway... it's pretty obvious that the whole "mullet bike phenomena" is just classic Motocross geometry and it's freaking brilliant The first time I threw my leg over a "proper mountain bike" I was disgusted because it felt more like Grandma's 10-speed then a badass BMX or Motocross vehicle I stuck to it and rode my muddy Fox for a few years with a couple old Motocross Buddies and a nationally rated female Rider It was okay but I always thought how awesome it would be for a mountain bike to have Motocross geometry and after doing a little Recon I found the specialized big hit with a 24 inch rear wheel🖒👈 This bike Corners like a ninja has an effortless Manuel and you sit so deep in the saddle it's practically impossible to get thrown over your bars... I can't believe this genius geometry was abandoned!! I bet one day we see the 24-inch wheel make a reappearance in top-level competition

@@mattredgate8015 o yeah, thats what they said about a 4 stroke winning the motocross crown in 2 stroke class👈

@@guerrilla1044 to be fair the 4-stroke only won because they kept upping the limit of the CC’s the 4 strokes could have. They killed the two stroke on purpose.

@@voltage80x yeah good point... was it a 450 and a 250 class?

@@guerrilla1044 yessir, they doubled the engine size versus the two stroke. In my belief they killed the two stroke in order to push the 4 stroke on the consumers, that way they would end up with more profit from the bikes overall.
