Festool makes some great tools and accessories but they are usually geared toward the mobile craftsperson. One such tool that has been a game-changer for me in terms of how I process sheet goods is the Multi-Function Table or MFT. The unit is loaded with work-holding features but because it needs to be mobile, it's fairly light and features fold out legs similar to a card table. I really wanted something more stable. Furthermore, there are a lot of tools and accessories that go hand in hand with the MFT and it would be nice to have storage for those thing right next to the MFT. With all of this in mind, I designed my Multi-Function Cart for Festool MFT.
While this cart is obviously purpose-built for the MFT, it's also quite useful for non-Festool woodworkers. It can easily function as a mobile assembly table, a mobile work cart, or you can raise the height a bit and have a very serviceable outfeed table.

Solid video, Marc. I've been watching your content for years, and one of the things that occurred to me in this video is how adept you are at pacing. Your presentations are a great example of Keep It Short & Simple. Not too fast or slow, but always edutaining. Thanks and kudos to you.

Omg I've been making kitchens for years and never thought to screw drawer fronts on using handle holes . That's genius !!!!! because it's always last thing I did putting handles on , so never thought about doing it that way . But it will save so much mucking about with masking tape and super glue or the locating pin method . Thank you mark ₩🙌🙌👍

Spags I’m near KCMO. And I had a neighbor named Jim. He wasn’t so great. I know where you grew up but Jim was from the same state NJ. He was also a Ford autoworker. He gave me the willies, creeped my wife out and our dog didn’t like him either. Now I live in a “country” neighborhood with no Jim’s near me and it’s oh so nice. I’m getting triggered just thinking about old Jim. Keep up the good work.

Sometimes i find your videos either lengthy or very commercial; this one reconciled me with your woodworking ideas and content value. Lots of great ideas in this vid. I have an MFT table that got outgrown by my shop setup; now i can make a better use of my portable table. I'll design a sort of downdraft table to the this concept as an added benefit; using my 3hp dust collection sys. A table that also incorporates my FS CT extractor and separator justifies taking the limited real-estate space of my shop with this huge floor foot print cart. Norm from Montreal, Canada

I had a similar idea, as I am just an avid woodworker, not a pro on the road. Just need to buy a track saw and the table, and I could copy your design. Space and money, maybe some day. Good work. Enjoy many of your videos in the past, and look forward to more.

I was thinking about doing this a few weeks ago with my MFT. the protractor sticks out an annoying amount that wastes space in my single garage workshop so I have bought the parfguide dogs and Festool rail clips that go with it. If I need to do angles I can always attach the protractor part again. Nice helpful video. 👍🏻😊

Glad I found this Marc. I ordered a full size Dash-Board work bench to replace my two old and new style mismatched MFT's and having a cabinet to support it makes a lot of sense. I'll need to stretch it out a bit, no pun intended, to accommodate a 92" long table and I think I'll use Dominos instead of fussing about with dados. That will also give me more room for some extra systainer drawers. BTW, the firehouse is looking muy beuno!

While I agree with the general idea of having a cabinet for the MFT to sit on for both storage and mobility in a fixed-location shop, I designed and built my version of a MFT cabinet with different requirements in mind. I made it identical in height to the MFT with the legs unfolded so you could temporarily sit another MFT next to it and attach them if desired. The foot print of the cabinet is identical to the MFT itself so you can clamp things to the side tracks of the MFT for doing things like edge banding. This also means the drawer handles don't extend past the outline of the MFT. I wasn't concerned about stowing the shop vac under the MFT, it's only used for systainer storage both in front and back. The extra space that leaves on one end has drawers for clamps/dogs and accessories. The double locking casters keep the cabinet rock solid when locked. The design was discussed on the Festool Owners Group here: www.festoolownersgroup.com/member-projects/give-me-an-excuse-to-come-up-with-version-2-for-this-mft-sysport/msg289955/#msg289955 Unfortunately I started doing all my designs in CAD after this project so I don't have precise plans available, but hand sketched plans are included in the thread.

saw some nice tricks, and please take the next remark with a smile, you are a little of a show off with your amazing collection of tools and gadgets, But hey if i could afford it i would probably do it too, although i look terrible on film LOL. love the cherry wood finish it makes it beautiful. I am a woodsman so if you come in my shop everything is rough and made of my own trees, but looking at you guys i am getting better. the furniture i make has to be rough because it is cabin furniture and made of twigs and logs. I might make something like it for my shop but without the fancy festool tingy lol but i have only my basement so to have a movable finish table with storage would be great. and instead of plywood i have to make my own sides and tops from slabs that i sawed. well keep them coming and keep showing off your stuff lol a man must have dreams lol

Hi Marc...Nice video and practical solution, as always! Since the table will stay in your shop, did you consider making it a bit larger to serve as an assembly table as well, and making your own top with accurately placed 20mm holes, using one of the commercial template systems.... I guess this would be assembly table 3.0 for you....so, basically not using the MFT at all, but creating your own top to take advantabe of all of the MFT clamping devices? Might be easier to cut plywood if it were larger.... Thanks!

Putting the MFT table top on a cart is an interesting idea, but I would miss the utility of easy access to the MFT underside for securing the Festool accessories to the top or joining multiple MFTs horizontally. If I made a cart, I would try to find a way to attach shelves directly to the extended legs and put the vacuum/saws/router on the shelf. The additional under table support/weight could help brace the MFT for more stability when using hand tools. Just a thought for those who use the MFTs as their only assembling/crosscutting/routing/hand-tooling surface, as I do in my shop.
@ricos1497
@ricos1497 4 года назад
He could have drilled holes for the legs and dropped the MFT down into them. Obviously that would have ruined the storage configuration underneath, but I think suspending the table entirely by a few mm would be best as the MFT wouldn't be as stable as what was built around it. Although that'd assume you didn't want the table lower anyway. Far simpler would be just to remove the legs and store if you're unlikely to need the portability.
@dabrownable

I noticed that your card was longer than the MFT. Was that because you wanted to house both the TS55 and TS75 in the center? What CT dust extraction did you design this cart to accommodate? Thank you so much for the video and the free plans. Very generous of you.

Great project. Thank you for sharing the free plans. Question unrelated to the build... I have been drooling over Festool for a good while. I only ever wanted the Domino till I went to Festool Connect and really saw the Track Saw in action. Which would you buy first.... the Domino or the Track Saw? I do plan on doing some case construction. Going to practice building cabinets in my new shop that is 32x35. LOVE the space. Need to make it more efficient. I really want both these tools though.
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 4 года назад
I would go by what you will likely get the most use out of first. Sounds like the saw might be your best bet. Just keep in mind, there are other brands of track saw that are cheaper and still really decent quality. Grizzly, DeWalt, Makita, just to name a few. The Domino, however, is a very different proposition as there's really no direct competitor. So I think the most budget-friendly way to go is to get the track saw first, save a few bucks by going with an alternate brand, then get the Domino sooner because you saved some money on the saw. :)

How accurate should the MFT table be? For instance the Festool MFT and such. Reason i ask is i purchased jig to make the grid and was not happy with the accuracy. I could not get past a 6x16 hole layout with out seeing runoff due to the guides locking in the jig had some slop. I might get it to be better if i add around the template guide to tighten the tollerances. But when i contact the manufacture they claim that tables are never accurate its the fence system that makes the accuracy and i was expecting too much even thought there jig was at a premium price off $199. Purchased this one due to UJK was out of stock but now i have one but have not used it yet. This was the response when i gave them the numbers that either the jig was off or the supplied Template guide was off. Hello Cliff. There is a big misconception with MFT tables and tops. The accuracy of a Festool MFT table comes from the actual rails that are part of the table itself. All of the Festool attachments are attached and referenced off of the rails. Not the table. If you think about all the “connections” from the router to the actual hole there are a lot of variables at play Router bit. Bushing to router. Bushing to template. Indexing pin to template. Indexing pin to hole. Locating pins to the template. Locating pins to the workpiece. potential runout in the router collet There has to be sufficient clearance between each of those for them to work. As you add holes, that “stackup” error will grow. The only way to avoid that would be to key off of the same location for each hole. Essentially what a CNC does. You want to make sure that there is no movement in the template when drilling the first holes. The template must be firmly clampled in place. The Festool MFT table is a clamping/work table. Without the additional fence system, it cannot be used to make accurate cuts. Once you install the Fence system, you must calibrate the track to the fence. At no time are the holes a part of that calibration as the holes are only used for clamps and stop etc. Even if done on a CNC, with the movements and wear in MDF/wood, even the Festool table is not very accurate. Check the Festool marketing data and you will not find anything about using the holes to make cuts, only for work holding. The accuracy comes from the MFT table rails.

I purchased your plans and was not sure of the height of your side panels. If I am looking a diagram is the table 34 " high plus height of your casters. How high is this table from ground level. I'm going to use a Kreg top laying on it because its a little bigger and a little less expensive you can also just buy the Kreg MDF replacement panel and frame it on top over work surface and remove it when just wanting a work surface.
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 3 года назад
Hi Thomas. The size of the side panels is listed in the cut list as well as in the plywood cut diagram. They are 21 1/2" high. But the top and bottom panel rabbets are added to the overall height so with a 4" caster the top surface of the cart is at about 27".
