Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Please join us for this exciting abandoned mine exploration of the Nomad Gold Mine. The Nomad was primarily a gold mine and was discovered in 1897. Silver, copper, and lead were secondary metals that were also mined here. In 1933 there were 22 men employed. In 1941, a new mill was erected, but the mine was closed by the war production board in 1942. In 1950, the mine was restarted and was active off and on until at least 1975.
We entered the mine through a nicely timbered portal to find spacious drifts that weaved through the mine workings. One of the first features we came to was a hoist room above a winze shaft. In the hoist room, there was a utility table and a mount for the hoist. We explored the rest of the first drift level and crossed a sketchy bridge that looped back to the hoist room. We then descended the ladders that went down the winze shaft deep into the mine, where we found some interesting artifacts. In one of the stopes, there were several small rocks hanging from strings, which is something that we have never seen before. There were also several unique artifacts that we checked out on the lower level. We hope you enjoy the video, and thanks for watching.

Well, hello Tom and Julie, how are my two favorite desert rats today? It's really good to see you out and about again . that's quite the old mine you were in that's for sure, obviously a copper mine looks very interesting some of the mineralization is still in there. I'm glad you were able to go down the ladders into the lower levels. Looks like they had a lot of junk piled up down around in there a lot of wood and stuff anyway thank you again for taking me along with you I appreciate it so much. And as always please be careful in everything you do ,and I hope to see you again soon.

Hi Tom and Julie Mr. Long Comment Here 5:58 is that the Killer Green Bud Mine? 9:22 The spools may be a reuse as when I had my Lode Mines the Explosive Det Cord came in 2200' rolls so I'd wrap what I needed for that days blasting on a small spools so as not to have more explosives on hand than needed, I'd also use small wire spools to hold my blasting cap lead wires on. 10:14 Miners Rolling Tray for that Weed, lol.13:14 who ever built that bridge put the left side support beam wedges in wrong, they should be driven in from underneath and not on top so the left side could slip and collapse underload, always keep that in mind when crossing false floors too, an improperly installed floor or bridge can be a disaster waiting to happen. You two cross a lot of stuff that gives this old Lode Miner the Willies, I am always yelling at my pc screen, "Tom Julie Not Without a Rope or Mask up!", I got Rocks in my Box and that mine dust and rodent debris is more hazardous than most Miners and Exporters alike know. 18:45 Might I suggest than when on any ladder especially wooden ones that you alway try to place your feet on the outsides of each rung and not in the middle. 19:33 Rocks on a String is a Miner Plumbob. 22:18 While still slightly Dangerous Fuse Caps are not as powerful as Electric Caps are and unlike Electric Caps over time water weeps in from the fuse and makes it a dud but Electric Caps can stay Explosive for many many years even in water. 23:18 Acetone for cleaning Rock Drills. 24:44 Highgrade Sampling Jig or sometimes called a Floatation Box, kind of like a small Sluice Box.. 27:41 Care YT can give a Strike for showing personal info. Well as usual my comment looks more like a book so I best shut up or it will be one. Take Care you Two, see you on the next one🙅

What a wild view from the mine road... How in the heck do they find the gold veins. Just dig around until they hit it?? They go in every direction. Up down around and all over. Another question: Since rattlesnakes den underground for warmth and some of these mines are warm... Did you ever run into a snake den??
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 17 дней назад
Hi Max. The view across Owens Valley towards Mount Whitney never gets old. I think the old miners could spot a potential valuable outcropping from a mile away. Once they get on it, they just keep following it. We never see snakes more than a few feet into a mine. We have seen a few places where they are balled up in the rocks, though. @TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 17 дней назад
Hi Brian. There is always a fair amount of gold mining going on, especially when the price goes up. Many mine claims are kept active by everything from hobby prospectors and owners of small mines to multi national mining companies with huge open mines. Many mines have been surveyed, and mineral vein assessments have been made so they know where the gold reserves are. If the price doubled, things would get wild in a hurry. Thanks Tom and Julie for another great mine video. PS what is a muck sheet and what are they used for .
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 17 дней назад
Hi Tony. The much sheet is a piece of flat steel that is placed on the floor at the working face of a drift. When the shot is fired, the charges are set off in a specific sequence, and the last charges lift the broken rock up and onto the mucksheet to allow easy shoveling and loading into an ore car. Curious on this deep explore, what was the air quality?
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 17 дней назад
Hi Doug. Almost all mines have some airflow moving through them. Even as you get deep underground, this is still usually true. We are usually in dry desert mines where the air quality is generally very good. We both carry air quality monitoring devices, and the number of times they have detected low oxygen is very few. The number of times we have detected other dangerous gasses is almost zero. If you are in a wet mine, that could be a very different scenario. Thanks for bringing up this important subject.✌️⛏️

That’s good! I figured from seeing some of the damp mine adventures, air is typically sketchy in them. Thanks for all you do to relive the early days of hard rock mining. Really enjoy them! 👍👍

That cardboard tube said Nomad Mining and Milling. I couldn’t find any info on it except that they may have a Super Fund site.

Hi Ed. Since that tube had a relatively recent date on it, maybe the mining company is responsible for some sort of reclamation on this or another site. In the old days, mine site reclamation was not practiced. 😬

Hi Kevin. Yes, it's a pretty cool mine to explore. We haven't seen a plumb line in a mine that I can remember. Thanks for watching!✌️⛏️

Good morning Tom and Julie. I've watched quite a few of your videos. Can I ask what types of safety equipment do you carry and have you had close calls inside the mines.

Hi Daniel. Thanks for watching several of our videos. We carry a lot of gear both inside and outside of the mines. We always each carry enough extra food, water, and clothing to easily survive an extra day and night over what we were planning. For inside the mines, we have helmets, three flashlights each with extra batteries, a four gas detector, O2 meter, first aid kit, knife, folding shovel, guns, multi tool, small tarps, knee pads, whistle, pen and paper, maps, GPS, compass, epi pen, gloves, 30' length of good rated utility cord, watch, lighter, candle, stiff hair comb for removing cactus spines, two way radios, bright colored cloth to flag the portal we've entered. If we are on rope, then there is a whole added bunch of kit for climbing hardware and packs for ropes and slings. Trekking poles are also a very valuable multi-purpose tool that we always have. Of course, there is camera equipment and lighting for the videos. We haven't had any major problems inside the mines. There are the usual falls that we've both had. Loose rocks falling down vertical shafts are probably one of the most dangerous scenarios that we face. Probably the best safety measure is a lot of common sense. There is not a lot of room for error when you are in a mine. Thanks for bringing up this important subject.👍😊

I Richard. Maybe I should have tried the weed, and then the hanging rocks would have made sense. Thanks for watching, we appreciate you!✌️⛏️
