How do I get started Deer Farming?
The best advice I can give is to watch all our TV shows and learn how other deer farmers operate their farms. Then, contact your state deer farm association and ask to see if they provide any kind of tutoring or educational opportunities. Also, attend deer farming conventions and meet local deer farmers. Finally, I’d suggest visiting as many farms as possible.
What's the best advice Keith has for new Deer Farmers?
Visit as many deer farms as possible and develop a business plan.
What is the North American Deer Registry?
The North American Deer Registry is what I like to refer to as “the holy grail of deer farming”. It has literally hundreds of thousands of animals listed that will provide the breeder with valuable information to assist in breeding, purchasing and selling deer.
How much property do I need to start a deer farm?
Normally the smallest deer pen I like to see if a half acre. Most are an acre in size. So you don’t need a lot of land to build deer pens. Make sure and take into consideration neighbors as deer tend to be high strung and the fewer close by neighbors the better. It’s also advisable to have shade available as well as lots of fresh water that is provided in water throughs.
How do I breed for consistency?
Breeding for consistency is done by choosing proven sires and dams that throw offspring you are seeking to produce.
What is Artificial Insemination and what is the success rate?
Artificial Insemination or what we call in the industry “AI” is a method used to impregnate deer with specific semen so that parentage and offspring can be predetermined.
Why partner on a deer?
There are many reasons to partner of deer but the biggest reason is to lessen the cost to obtain ownership, albeit partial ownership. Partnerships are becoming more commonplace in the deer industry.
What is the best deer feed and feeding schedule?
I’ve fed Record Rack deer feed for over twenty years and have done so because the science that goes into it. Literally, the scientists at Record Rack continue to push the envelope with research and the results are incredible. Most successful deer breeders feed their deer free choice out of some kind of trough feeder so that they are able to monitor consumption on a daily basis. This allows them to be able to determine if there may be health issues with their herd as reduced consumption may indicate some kind of problem.
What are the national deer organizations to join and why?
NADeFA is the North American Deer Farmers Association and their purpose is to represent the deer industry and its members on a national level.
The DBC (Deer Breeders Corporation) also works to represent deer breeders noaas well as support scientific research on whitetail deer.

Gotta say, it gives me hope for the future of our outdoorsmen seeing so many comments talking about hunters harvesting their deer the old fashion way. Seeing them on the trail cam, scouting for sign, setting up a stand, and putting the work in to harvest a nice wild trophy. I agree, nothing better than th e experience of a true, wild hunt. And it's not that I'm totally against this kind of deer farming, but I have a much greater appreciation for old fashioned, traditional hunting. Cheers

I have hunted for big bucks since the 80s. Never have killed one on a plot or feeder. My state of Oklahoma started promoting trophy hunting , feeding and dropped the harvest limit in the 90s. I new then our resident hunting was going to be in trouble. All of that deer farming and buck limits did just what I thought it would. Now our traditional hometown hunting places are being bought or leased out by wealthy out of state hunters. Most of Southern Oklahoma is being bought by Texicans. Hunting is well on its way to being a rich man's sport. They have no problem shooting trophy's like these store bought deer.

As a Texan, I can’t help but agree with you. I grew up in a tiny farm and ranch town in the panhandle and used to be able to hunt in a lot of places in my hometown. Now all the metroplex folk are buying and leasing up land in my hometown since the hill country in central TX is getting too crowded for them, and now it’s getting harder to find places to hunt without paying a pretty penny. I see bucks like Blackjack and other genetically engineered deer, and all it does is scream "deer farm". To me, their racks reach a point of looking hideous. Looking at one that's been mounted, the first two thoughts that cross my mind are "What shooting gallery did this thing come from?", and "How many thousands of dollars did you pay for this thing?" I much prefer bucks who have expressed their full genetic potential through TSI, healthy, nutritious food plots, and well managed habitat. I do realize that in today's world, most people who command high incomes work so many hours that they don't have time to manage a hunting property in such a way that bucks, does, fawns, or other wildlife will realize their genetic potentials, so "hunting" in shooting galleries stocked with genetically engineered, pen raised, "mine's bigger than yours" bucks is about their only hope for bagging a buck. Not my idea of a good time, but it's their time and their money.

Deer farming and high fence hunting is the absolute worst possible aspect of the hunting industry. It contributes nothing to the conservation of whitetails, and is all about making a profit. Farms and high fences are the sources of many CWD outbreaks in wild populations which can cause devastating effects on the wild herds. They say Blackjack is a multi-million dollar deer. Imagine what that money could do towards the conservation of wild sheep or other big games species that are struggling across North America, instead of being spent on a penned up deer so some guys in Texas can buy his semen or fawns to send to a high fence hunting area. It honestly shocks me that Keith Warren has a platform as big as he does in the hunting industry, considering is he the most phony “outdoorsman” I have ever seen in my life. I hardly ever see him spending his money on fair chase hunts that help the conservation of wild species, and instead helps fill the pockets of greedy ranches and farms. And to top it off, he does stupid shit like hunting whitetails with a .50 BMG, which is complete overkill for basically any animal in North America, let alone a penned whitetail. Natural wild life would be so much better off without these high fences and farms, and I’d love to chat with anyone who has to say otherwise.

@@cookingonwheels2695 I don't think that was the argument in the first place. He's saying that high fence hunting in general (the places where these bucks are sold to in order to produce offspring or to possibly be shot themselves) isn't proper hunting since they're still fenced in. Nobody is saying that they're shooting the farm deer in those tiny pens.

They keep the does separate to be fair. The bucks never actually breed with the does it seems. It's all artificial. So maybe that's how they get away with having so many bucks together. It also would be extremely expensive to constantly drug hundreds of deer each day or multiple times a day.

People complaining about these high fenced "farms" but I see many videos where they sre building special food plots to enhance the "natural" growth, feeders that are graining or some could consider "baiting" the deer, and "blinds" that look like you are sitting in your heated house, watching for deer out the window, and when they show up, you just open the window and blast away.

Basic genetics. You pick the ones you think look nice and make him the father of the next generation. By chance, a few of the kids will be even better looking than the father. a couple generations later and you have this. That’s how all the different dog types were made. I get wanting to improve genetics of deer on your land, but what I don't understand is how exactly it would be done. Can these deer survive in the wild? What's stopping your neighbor from shooting the deer you spent all that money on? The area would have to be fenced to protect your investment. Or do they trap a Doe and inseminate her before releasing her and keep the Buck you bought fenced in?
@PeacefulAcres
@PeacefulAcres 2 года назад
They said that you have to have a high fence and permits in order to buy the buck and release onto your land. So if you have a couple herds of does on 100 acres of fenced in land the buck will eventually find them and breed with them. Then the babies are the ones you would shoot in your fenced in area and mount. Nobody would be buying these 10s or even 100s of thousands dollar bucks to then fully release into nature, even if it was legal.

There's nothing better then seeing a nice whitetail buck in the wild whether it's a 4 point or a 150 class 10 point, but these Frankenstein monsters that are being genetically engineered are not what hunting's about. And these deer farms spread cwd across the country which gets into the wild population and ruin hunting for the average hunter that hunts to feed his family, not just want some freak set of antlers hanging on the wall. These deer farms don't care abouts the sport of whitetail hunting, they only see dollar signs and could care less what happens to the wild population of deer. They'd probably prefer to see the wild population disappear so you'd have to go to them if you wanted a deer to eat.
