Multi-tracking with TP-7 & TX-6 | teenage engineering

Did you know that TP-7 + TX-6 = a portable 6 channel multitracking setup?
Plugging the two together with a USB-C to C cable allows you to track audio from the 6 channel mixer. When you play your recording back, the audio feeds straight back to the channels for you to remix and add FX. Because the audio is captured before the channel settings, you can completely reconfigure your mix.

ok wow...until now I really thought these devices were just unuseable gimmicks, but this seems like an amazing new way to create finished music from hardware devices. Would love to try this if I had the money, lol

I mean, you could do this with your phone and no doubt some free app (GarageBand for iPhone certainly can, but it isn’t free). But it’s never really the point of hardware. I mean, you can do pretty much anything with software alone these days. People just like screwing around with little toys, especially if they’re nicely-made pleasing ones (which by all accounts these are).

Really cool, but how do you save the mix? When TP7 is playing back and thus the usb c port of the TX6 is blocked you need another recorder or DAW to record the mix?

The audio is recorded to a multichannel file on the TP-7 that you can extract later, but it doesn't apply any FX, EQ etc. If you want to record your mix, as its playing back from TP-7 to TX-6, you'll probably need another device to record the analogue out.

TX-6 can record a stereo file of all inputs internally.

For the price of the TP-7, I bought an Octatrack and will actually be able to make , finish and perform tracks with. On the other hand, these devices seem nice but are so limited in their usage. Like, I can understand why i paid that for the OT, I can’t understand why someone would pay that for a recorder.

What does pre fader mean? I’m under the impression it means before the effects/eq’s you’ve added to the input sources. If that’s the case, does the TP7 have the option to multitrack with the effects already added? meaning “post fader”

That's right - the recorded signal is pre-FX + EQ as well. There isn't a way to set this up with post FX / EQ / Fader. I think this is down to the way you are switching from recording to playback. You could see how printing with EQ and compression might end up having the same processing doubled up by accident. The way it works now - once you've tracked your jam, you can mix the multitrack recording afterwards on the TX-6. If you want to capture the resulting mix, you need to take a feed from the main output of TX-6.

@@pseifarth The only way to record individual channels from TX-6 is by using TP-7 with USB-C, or in audio interface mode with a DAW.

Nice so if i plug main out from tx6 to apollo solo with its plugins(compressors, preamps, ambience and even simplest ios device will let me produce album quality mixes?

Apollo will be plugged to the ios device with daw, if TE only let me to omit the apollo by leting me install those UA plugins on tx6 and make some three way connection to merge tx,tp and ios device, i to would be fully battery powered setup.

Not offline, you'll need to record the main out from TX-6. You could also record the main out to the TP-7 if you want to capture the resulting mix.

@@mitchelceney4514 a used ipad with garageband... not trying to be a smart azz. I totally get the appeal of teenage engineering products, they're really cool and well designed, and have dope user interfaces. If you're after "pure functionality" then these aren't the right tools. At the end of the day making music should be expressive and fun.
