Great job! I was starting to play around with PiP and wasn’t clear on what the difference was with sync clips vs multi cam clips but now I know. This video also helped show me how to incorporate PiP into a multi cam video. Much appreciated!

Beautifully explained. Thanks. I want to know this: apart from imported footage, can we set camera angles and camera names to EXPORTED MOVIE CLIPS that we want to use along with latest imported footage of our project? To help you understand my question better let me explain myself. Today, I have shot a song of mine at church with three cameras, I doing the singing and a Sister performing the dance. I intend to make a Multicam clip, edit and export the video. Next week, we plan to shoot only the music portions of the song [sans the vocals] with that Sister dancing to the music at SEVERAL locations. How to go about setting up the angles and create a Multicam clip is to me 'mind boggling'. I look to you for any suggestions you have to offer in this scenario.
@andrewsaraceni
@andrewsaraceni 7 месяцев назад
Thanks! I would just bring all of the clips together later in post, make sure they each have the same audio track to sync in the background, and do it that way. Once you export you'll only have a single edit and lose the multicam (but you could save the FCPX library).

I have imported footage from three cameras today of a Sister giving her testimony in Church yesterday. While importing the videos, I had chosen creation of Proxy medium [Pro res]. I made a Multicam clip of them along with the lab recorded audio file. When I had almost finished the edits AND EVEN DID COLOUR CORRECTION, just out of curiosity I tried to find out whether the video file was showing as a proxy media in the inspector window. To my surprise I found that the video I inspected had three green dots: implying that it contained optimised, original and proxy media! Wondering whether this was because I had left background render turned on, I looked into the preferences, where, under playback tab the background render was UNCHECKED! However, under the Playback section, I found this option checked [by default]: Create optimised media for Multicam clips. This being so, should one take care to uncheck this box every time while making a Multicam clip with files imported as proxy? I need to ask another doubt in this aspect. My memory is a bit foggy but I think I read somewhere that one has to work with optimised media while doing colour correction. Can you please clear the fog in this matter too while working with Multicam clips? Thanks in advance Dr Somanna
@andrewsaraceni
@andrewsaraceni 7 месяцев назад
You can color correct without optimized media, it all depends on the Mac you're using and how powerful it is (e.g. the new M1/M2/M3s can generally handle it). I sometimes disable Background Render for multicam clips, but for older Macs or certain workflows it's probably still a good thing to do/leave as a default.

Great tutorial. I would prefer to soften the cuts with a short cross dissolve. I've looked high and low and everywhere in between for information on this subject. I find absolutely nothing. Can you or anyone here help me learn to do some cross dissolve on a multicam clip? Is it even possible? If it's possible can a pre-set dissolve be easily applied to all cuts at once on the timeline? Thanks.
@andrewsaraceni
@andrewsaraceni Год назад
Thanks! Once you've made your cuts on the multicam, you should be able to just drag the Cross Dissolve effect on/between the cuts like any other clips.
@olympiafridaysatthefirstco2531
Well, what 'cha know! There is a simple way to do this. This is thanks to your fellow fcpx posters Brad and Donna, @Brad_West. I just tried it and it works perfectly: Olympia "Fridays at the First" Concerts You can definitely add cross dissolves to cuts on multicams the same way you would add to normal clips. If you want to add them to all cuts, select all of the multicam clips on the timeline and hit Cmd T to add a cross dissolve to every cut. They should default to 1 second long. If you want them shorter, I would suggest going to Final Cut Pro > Preferences > Editing and set the default transition during to whatever you want and then select everything and hit Cmd T. Hope that helps!

@@andrewsaraceni that might be it. I assigned the camera only and it let me do that just fine. Maybe that just gives you more granular control of multi-clips from each camera.

Would you use multicam for a slightly different purpose as well? Namely selecting different takes of the same clip. I have 10 versions of a 3 minute monologue. All 10 takes are synced with their respective audio files. I put each of the takes in separate projects. As I'm going through them, I label each project with "Keep" or "Don't keep". Trouble is even in the "No Keep" takes there are small parts of it which I like. How do you deal with having many multiple takes of the same scene or monologue? Should I even have synced them and put them in different projects?
@andrewsaraceni
@andrewsaraceni 8 месяцев назад
Usually I would just line them up side-by-side in one project, go through them, discard the ones I dont like and maybe label the "keeps" (or, separate them into their own projects). I don't think there's much value putting them all in a big multicam unless they all share a common clip/source (e.g. audio, or the video takes are one big file).
@Ernoburger
@Ernoburger 8 месяцев назад
@@andrewsaraceni Thank you. I heard the "Auditions" feature could be useful for this in FCPX as well. Have you used it before? I've yet to try it, but right now I'm thinking of simply doing it manually similar to what you describe: chose a circle take or main take then add or remove things as needed. Possibly stack alt sections of different takes on top of the main take in the timeline in certain sections and switch between them in the timeline.
@andrewsaraceni
@andrewsaraceni 8 месяцев назад
@@Ernoburger No problem, I haven't really used the Auditions feature, but it sounds like it would cover the use case/workflow you're thinking of.

The PIP is interesting since other youtubers usually don't talk about it in multicam videos. I never had to make a video that require a PIP so far, but I'm curious now: In case you want to switch the PIP and the screen capture every once in a while, would it be possible to make the PIP a multicam itself (just duplicate the one existing actually) and to switch angle on at the same moment you change the fullscreen one but reverse ? In this case, it would be a Multicam, with another multicam on top of it but cropped and then you can simply delete the parts that you don't want it to appear at all ? 🤷🏽‍♂ I don't know if I make myself clear here 😅
@andrewsaraceni

If you double click on the multicam in the project timeline, that should expand it to show the different clips it's made up from.

@@25mrkeys Even with cuts, you can still double click on one of the cuts to expand it to show the full multicam to adjust the main clips and apply stabilization, etc. When you click in, you can make breakpoints (Command B) to separate the back end of the multicam clip to apply the stabilization on that one section.

@andrewsaraceni
@andrewsaraceni 2 месяца назад
Are they largely out of sync, or just slightly off? FCPX can get mixed up sometimes syncing across multiple clip fragments, or if audio levels aren't quite loud enough, or the frequency/kHz is different. Could be a few different factors.
