‼️ THIS VIDEO IS A CRITIQUE‼️ PLEASE READ THIS COMMENT, THIS IS IMPORTANT: ▪️ALL THE DRAMAS NAME ARE IN THE DESCRIPTION ⬆️ ▪️This video is not only about homophobia but also about heteronormativity. Please, keep that in mind. ▪️I’ll delete any homophobic comment. ▪️I’M NOT COMPLETELY CONDEMNING THOSE DRAMAS : First of all, I’m not saying those dramas did an entire bad job, are completely homophobic or are bad dramas you shouldn’t watch. Please, don’t attack me because your favourite drama is here and don’t attack me for something I didn’t say. There are dramas that I liked in here. But I think it’s important to keep a perspective even on the things you like. Hope you can do the same. ▪️SOME DRAMAS DID BOTH A GOOD AND BAD JOB : For example, I think Prison playbook and the Beauty inside did, overall, a good job. But, where they failed, is when they didn’t condemn homophobic behaviours or used them for humour purposes, for example. 🎬 I also made a video about good representations and about kdramas that did a good job portraying a queer character : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DoNSCtpZmSs.html ▪️This video is very restricted around the representation or gay and lesbians because it’s what happen in kdramas too. ⚠️ THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PICTURING AND PROMOTING HOMOPHOBIA! 🔛 Turn on the English subtitles for more explanations. I recommend you to watch if once without the subs and a second time with the subs on! It'll be easier for you. 🔺I. WHY DOES THOSE DRAMAS ARE HERE? 🔸 Humor purposes: (Vincenzo, Strong woman, the beauty inside, my strange hero..) Gay people or homosexual acts are often used for humor purposes. What’s wrong with it? “Very much offensive prejudices against minority groups are kept and spread within the frame of a joke thanks to the ‘I’m only joking’ fact which allows everyone to be as politically incorrect as they desire.” - Read more here : dialnet.unirioja.es/descarga/articulo/2514259.pdf 🔸Bad representations: (Vincenzo, Record of youth) I made a whole point on this, please read bellow. 🔸Stereotypes: (Strong woman..) ‘LGBT rights activists have fought against fictional representations of LGBT people that depict them as violent and murderous. [...]’ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_stereotypes www.betterhelp.com/advice/stereotypes/stereotypes-definition-and-why-they-are-wrong/ 🔸Not condemning homophobia: (What’s wrong with Secretary Kim) Showing but not condemning homophobia is normalizing it and is equal to say it’s okay to be homophobic. 🔸Homosexuality as something vulgar/scary/funny/disgusting/embarrassing : (My strange hero, He is psychometric...) 🔸Heterosexuality shown as a norm: (True Beauty, Secretary kim and a LOT more) About heteronormativity, please read more down below. 🔸Pseudo-homosexuality: (Coffee Prince...) seoulbeats.com/2012/09/k-dramas-and-pseudo-homosexuality-what-gives/ 🔸Sad ending for homosexuality : (Mr Queen, Prison playbook..) Not the worst but it’s disappointing. The fact that gay people can’t just have a happy ending when every straight couple does is just treating them differently and is equal to say gay people just can’t have their happy ending as everyone else. 🔺II. WHAT IS HOMOPHOBIA AND HETERONORMATIVITY? 🔹 ‘Homophobia’ : “Homophobia encompasses a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. It has been defined as contempt, prejudice, aversion, hatred or antipathy, may be based on irrational fear and ignorance, and is often related to religious beliefs. Homophobia is observable in critical and hostile behavior such as discrimination and violence on the basis of sexual orientations that are non-heterosexual.” (Wikipedia) 🔹“Heteronormativity”: “Heteronormativity is the belief that heterosexuality is the default, preferred, or normal mode of sexual orientation. It assumes the gender binary (i.e., that there are only two distinct, opposite genders) and that sexual and marital relations are most fitting between people of opposite sex. A heteronormative view therefore involves alignment of biological sex, sexuality, gender identity and gender roles. Heteronormativity is often linked to heterosexism and homophobia. The effects of societal heteronormativity on lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals can be examined as heterosexual or "straight" privilege.” (Wikipedia) “Why Heteronormativity Is a Bad Thing?” : www.teenvogue.com/story/heteronormativity-gender-identity-sexual-orientation 🔺III. WHY BAD REPRESENTATIONS CAN BE HARMFUL? Just look at all the recent successful kdramas, do you see any good and important gay person? Who has an important role, who is important for the plot, who is not just some side character? Who do good things, useful things? Who, at least, is not a bad person? Or, at least, is not useless for the plot? I don’t. Or a very few. It’s important to have more representations of gay people in kdramas if we then want them to see them in a villain role. To not portray something or to only poorly portray it have consequences. And when it’s a matter of human rights, it’s not okay. - More here : everything500390422.wordpress.com/2021/03/16/why-is-vincenzo-episode-8-homophobic/ (at the end of the article, I think it explain well what I tried to say) 🔺IV. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROMOTING AND PICTURING HOMOPHOBIA: Picturing something you’re willing to denounce is actually okay and even a good thing. Some kdramas did that very well (Run on, Move to heaven.. You can found them in my video menstionned above). But the ones included here promoted homophobia one way or another. Promoting homophobia or heteronormativity is encouraging it, reinforcing it and this is done in different, subtle and maybe unconscious ways (read point I.). Perpetuating stereotypes, using homosexuality for humour purposes.. is promoting homophobia and encouraging it. - Queer Representation in Film and Television : mediasmarts.ca/digital-media-literacy/media-issues/diversity-media/queer-representation/queer-representation-film-television - Media Representations of Homosexuality : pdc.ceu.hu/archive/00001509/01/Media_representation_of_homosexuality.pdf 🔺V. CLARIFICATIONS ABOUT SOME DRAMAS : (I’ll put links to articles because they are well detailed, please read them) 🔹 Strong Woman : www.kdramafighting.com/2017/03/homosexuality-k-dramas-and-mixed-bag-of.html 🔹Vincenzo: The problem is not Vincenzo’s reaction but how the only gay character of the entire show was portrayed. everything500390422.wordpress.com/2021/03/16/why-is-vincenzo-episode-8-homophobic/ 🔹The Tale of Nokdu / Coffee Prince (+ You’re beautiful / To the beautiful you / Sunkyunkwan Scandal) : seoulbeats.com/2012/09/k-dramas-and-pseudo-homosexuality-what-gives/ & www.scmp.com/magazines/style/leisure/article/3036411/sungkyunkwan-scandal-and-4-other-korean-drama-series-which 🔹Mr Queen : dreamingsnowflake2013.tumblr.com/post/643211967313608704/not-only-is-the-ending-of-mr-queen-terrible & the review of this person on Mr Queen : mydramalist.com/profile/anjelle/reviews

You said the right things, sometimes even in the drama you can see that for example a guy accidentally kisses another guy and people start laughing, I think this is not funny and therefore according to them when they kiss two guys accidentally makes you laugh but not funny, when I see homophobic people I don't understand why they are💔😭 Hai detto delle cose giuste, a volte anche nei drama si vede che per esempio un ragazzo da per sbaglio un bacio a un altro ragazzo e le persone si mettono a ridere, io credo che questo non faccia ridere e quindi secondo loro quando si baciano due ragazzi per sbaglio fa ridere ma non fa ridere , quando vedo delle persone omofobe non capisco perché lo siano💔😭

one thing that infuriates me is when the ONLY queer character in a movie or tv show is shown as the villian, perverted and abusive. ive seen a lot of cis het people trying to defend this notion by saying "atleast ur getting representation" which is so messed up because media and the things you watch influence so much of ur thinking and ideas. Growing up I hardly saw any good queer representation in mainstream media and the representation that was there it was so streotyped and bad that i grew up thinking that being queer was bad and it took me a long time to accept my queer identity. the internalized homophobia that i have affects my daily life so much that sometimes i have to physically tell myself that there is nothing wrong with me being queer . this internalised homophobia would not have been there if i had seen good queer representation in mainstream media. so whoever says that "you guys are already allowed to be gay how much more can you want" needs to STFU. the "rights" some of us have are the BARE MINIMUM . A lot of us can still be legally killed or imprisoned for just existing you dont get to tell us what rights we deserve or dont.

Before I even see the video, I just gotta say that I’m glad that Vincenzo is on this list. I remember not just watching the episode but also seeing reaction vids, and for some reason people kept shipping/fangirling over the “gay” relationship where Vincenzo was pretending to be attracted to the gay abusive piece or garbage. First of all: why is the one gay character we have happen to be an abusive pervert? Not saying that there can’t be gay villainous roles, but when they ONLY play that role just like when other minorities get stuck with a certain role: that sends an explicit message. (There are plenty of other kdramas that have gay/crossdressing men as villainous roles and they’re always perceived to have mental problems) Secondly: it’s like people suddenly forgot he was the villain of the episode the moment they showed some fan service. He’s toxic and abusive towards all his past lovers, how are people suddenly blind to this just cause of a few “cute” shots of the two guys together?! I’ve seen some edits on RU-vid where they’ve made this “couple” a ship and it just bothers me so much.
@Ami-333
@Ami-333 3 года назад
Exactly !! I loved the drama but I had two major problems with it and one was that scene. I remember people talking about that horse riding scene before I started it and felt happy that they did that and when I watched it with context I was really angry :( Making the ONLY gay character abusive is one thing but then also clearly „queerbaiting“ fans with those date scenes sucks. Not related to the video but I‘m still mad about it is the way they handled jang hanseo. Letting a victim of abuse die through his abuser is terrible and disgusting. His death was pointless and he deserved his happy ending more than any other character. In general the way most Kdramas handle abuse and stuff like that is still too insensitive and often normalized
@Taradays

@@Ami-333 I felt Jang Hanseo so much. If I had been in my prior domestic abuse situation I don't know I think that scene would have broke me. I mean we didn't even get to see his funeral. i also kinda want to mention how weird Vincenzo was acting when having to pretend that he's interested in a man. it's kinda hard to tell if it's purely because he's a man or because of other factors which made the guy absolutely vile and disgusting (it was also something that was affecting Vincenzo personally) but to me his reaction and reluctance felt like it has more to do with Minsung just simply being a man... like in the show Vincenzo had plenty situations when he had to act as someone else to get what he needs and so it felt very unnecessary that his reaction to having to seduce a man was so exaggerated and he really had to force himself to go through with it... but like i said this is more ambiguous since it was affecting him and his family so yeah. still, there was no need for that imho; they could've handled it better.

@@lawfulhusbands i kind of disagree, to the king the person he fell in love with was a woman he truly didn't believe him when he said he was a man, bong hwan however definitely cared about the king in a romantic way of some sort, although the drama did imply he was affected by the original's queen emotions ( with her dad too and cousin) so it really ambitious, especially that he most likely wouldn't have fallen for him if he wasn't in her body, so I don't think it was happy/sad ending I think it was the most logical ending.

The person you responded to, also shouldn't have tried to put labels to it, too, btw so don't come at me saying I have a double standard. The entire bit about Bong Hwan being affected by the queens emotions might be what caused the love to happen in the first place, but at the end of the day Bong Hwan very much loved the king and that's why he was crying over him and frantically making sure he survived. Also he really really felt those natural emotions towards their child and you aren't just going to forget that was how you felt. It also doesn't matter if the king knew the queen had the soul of a man in her or not. He fell for Bong Hwan and all his chaos, perseverance, and funny words. Pretty sure the male soul/female body combo qualifies "Mr. Queen" as not cisgender btw and the king doesn't need to consciously label himself or think any differently of himself for liking another human

It not only gives a unique and necessary telling of the LGBTQ+ youth experience, but this beautiful story provides important representation without perpetuating the harmful stereotypes and tropes of a lot of other LGBTQ+ media. Outside LGBTQ+ representation, Young Royals does an outstanding job of conveying teenagers’ lives in its representation of mental health as well as the autism community.. It's a MUST watch.

It starts with men making fun of teenage girls for liking k-pop(misogyny) and homophobia is so commonplace among men that it's regarded as "a guy thing". And so we get a large group of women and girls who seem to think that they are "quirky" or "not like other girls" for being homophobic (especially towards gay men) ,but i guess it's only in my country bcuz I've never heard other people mention it.

I just started Vincenzo yesterday. I am currently in ep5 and I am so so so glad that I watched this video. I can't believe that they went w a plot like that. Normally I am OK with queer characters being evil or villians but this is different. First of all Vincenzo has no queer characters other than him and showing that gay men are a way of humor and always bothering straight men is just so problematic. Like wtf? I am not gonna keep watching the show. Because if I do that I will feel like I am betraying my community. I must be so damn lucky that I've found your channel. Your videos are amazing and topics you've brought awareness are *chef's kiss* I realized that kdramas are bad at representing the LGBTQIA+ community when I first started watching them (especially strong woman). They won't show them as a couple but they'll give us countless moments that gives couple vibes or makes us ship them. and if you say anything, they'll be like, oh its just your mind, we're just showing normal bromance.

Now I love kdramas and I will probably love them for a long time, but I’ve actually stopped watching well regarded dramas like Strong Girl BongSoon and Vincenzo because I (who identifies as queer) have felt so uncomfortable and almost attacked by the way the LGBTQ+ community was portrayed. I really hope as a new generation of filmmakers starts creating in Korea that we see a shift in these horrendous tropes because it really saddens me to have so many amazing pieces of tv be successful at the expense of a already incredibly mistreated and misrepresentation group of people.

Ahhh thank you for including scenes where people ask the males if they have a girlfriend yet and vice versa! It's such a bad habit society has, but not many people recognize that this should be changed. It's sad in how many dramas heteronormativity shines through, and even worse how the LGBTQ+ folks are either portrayed as villainous and perverted or just the comedic relief. I like some good bromance, especially when toxic masculinity is thrown out the window, but just as friends who are very comfortable with eachother. Some scenes and dramas however take it too far solely for fan service and it disappoints me so much

I refused to watch Vincenzo because I had seen the fan videos and was excited at first until I saw the comments of how the gay character us portrayed and I did even more research and yeah, the 1 gay character is shown to be problematic and abusive. Wow. And you even showed Mr. Queen. 😭 I went on such a rant for that show and how they basically "No Homo" the ending with BH when HE actually fell for the King but he did not get to stay!! Let alone meet him in the future! Everyone's: "Oh CJ should meet him in the future as a women to complete the cycle" irritated me so much because, why? CJ and BH can't meet as two guys and fall in love??? And don't even get me started on fact that other fans of the show can't even see a relationship between them without BH being in SYs body. Like. Come on! Anyway, thank you again for this. I love Vincenzo and it hurts me to see the implicit homophobia in it. But it was obvious while I was watching the show. To this day I've not seen good representation of the LGBTQ community in any Korean media except for a webtoon called Free Throw, where a stereotypical gay character does what he normally does in K-dramas: approach the male character provactively and act very sexually, but instead of being disgusted the characters talk to him about his sexuality, accept him and help him get the help he needs. It's great.

Thank you! I get absolutely annoyed when I see stuff like this. Strong woman bong soon was a good drama but I couldnt watch it anymore when I started noticing how they were straight up making fun of homosexuality. Kdramas always do this. I think only a few dramas have normalised it and I love them for being thoughtful enough to give a good representation. The woman dressing up as a man, and them falling in love. The guy thinking he's gay but ends up glad he's not. It's annoying and so cliche. However in coffee prince, I remember how Gong Yoo's character said he doesn't care what the gender was, that he will like 'him' no matter what. But yet they had to make it "safer".

Stoppppp, this is INCREDIBLE!!!😍😍😍THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS MESSAGE OUT THERE! The amount of effort and thought you put into this video is palpable, which I am so thankful for🙏🏼. As a half-Asian person, I fully understand that the majority of Asian cultures still have a long way to go in terms of being more progressive, inclusive and supportive of the LGBTQ+ community. However, it still upsets me that so many dramas and movies are portraying non-heterosexuality in a negative/unfair light. I personally read/watch BL; although I am happy that these relationships are getting more recognition, many of the plots and characters are still heavily dramatised and exaggerated to the point where they don’t even seem remotely realistic anymore. Additionally, it also makes me so sad when homosexuality is used as a gimmick or joke in dramas. Why, oh why, must these characters become so offended and defensive if they are asked whether or not they are gay? The double standard (i.e. getting no/little reaction when asking if someone is straight) is also unfortunate. Overall (after this long speech😅), I just love this video so thank you for making it💜💜

Example: the penthouse scene where everytime Eun Byeols dad got beat up the thugs were only black, the scene where Logan lee's twin brother in penthouse dressed as famous black South African gangster, making Europeans seem higher class in kdramas, saying that darkskin is ugly (very common in dramas) labelling 1 country worst then the other (example in Hate to love you it labeled America higher class then China), labelling as 1's background, the the korean movie "commitment" the classmates think the leads sister is attractive but make fun of the lead guys sister for looking half koreans and half chinese while throwing racial slurs (please check reply)

2. Simply forgiving 1 person after finding out their background (sterotypes) example in Boys Over Flowers/ Meteor garden when the parents forgive daoming si for bullying shanghai just because hes from a higher class background then they are, taking 1 responsibility as another, example being the kdrama Heirs. (Sterotypes) showing a lower class person working for a higher class person, considering it normal to be treated badly since you are a lower class and you are just considered a "servant" to the person. Taking full advantage of the situation, telling a close one to get close to the higher class person since they are rich, without being full of aware if the person they are telling to do that is interested or not. I felt really bad for the future guy in Mr. Queen. He was the one the King fell in love with and still to maintain heteronormativity, the writers brought back the spirit of the original Queen. And everytime there’s a show the heroine cross dresses in, the hero always has a panic about it and there’s these ‘comedic’ bits where everyone’s talking about how he might be gay. The only show I’ve seen which dealt with the same trope well was Rowoon’s character in The King’s Affection. He’s shown as having a crush on the Crown Prince since the beginning and when he finds out that it’s a woman, he’s like ‘oh?’ And Just goes with it.
