I have been doing the 16/8 intermittent fasting everyday for almost 2 weeks now since making this video and the benefits so far have been positive for me,
16/8 involves limiting my consumption of food and drink to a set window of eight hours per day and not eating food for the remaining 16 hours.
It seems to be providing great results with minimal effort on my part. My body is also getting used to not eating so I feel I can go with longer periods of time not eating - so far longest has been up to 20 hours.
What are the benefits?
It can help to boost brain function
enhance longevity
improve blood sugar control
help reduce imflammation in the body
Try balancing each meal that you have with a variety of healthy whole fruits such as
Fruits, Apples, babanas, berries, oranges, peaches pears.
Veg, broccoli, cucumber, tomatoes etc
Whole grains, rice, barley, buckwheat
Healthy fats, olive oil, avacados and coconut oil
Sources of protein, fish, legumes, nuts, seeds etc

Hi Laura! Thanks for sharing your experiences with intermittent fasting. I think fasting is really just “timed eating” and not depriving oneself of essential nutrients. The body has its own circadian rhythm that’s why it’s important to “time” when to feed it and when to let it digests food. Here are some of my personal experiences and tips about intermittent fasting. - morning: I drink probiotics with empty stomach. I take probiotics so “good bacteria” can colonize my gut. It is said that 70 percent of immune system is found there. Also, good bacteria is said to help digest food. I often drink probiotics with warm ginger tea or just plain water. - After 30 mins. I eat fruits with digestive enzymes like papaya, avocado and kiwi. Then have 1/2 cup brown rice with lots of fish!! (Mackerel and Milk fish). I think it’s better to eat protein in the morning so the body can digests it easily (because we often do activities during the day). - Then...drink vitamins (b complex *better if the folate is in methyfolate form as well as b12 in methylcobalamin, vit d3 , calcium and magnesium etc) - go out and have fun!! (Do something that makes you feel happy and try not think about anything else) Deep belly breathing is a good tandem for fasting. It activates the vagus nerve and helps you to relax AND helps to strengthen the diaphragm muscle which in turn helps with stomach’s peristalsis. - around afternoon, when I’m craving for sweets. I make cocoa, oats with mixed nuts porridge. It’s really good! *1 tb unsweetened cocoa, ground flax seeds, ground sunflower seeds, pulsed pumpkin seeds and oats. - then before 4:00 pm (my final meal) I try to eat at-least 2 cups of mixed vegetables with brown rice or fish. I’ve also been to taking s- acetyl glutathione with superoxide dimutase at night. It takes discipline but it’s not too hard. Other than that, I hope all our efforts can somehow make our bodies happy. * take these with a grain of salt as I am not an expert but I try to research in websites like ncbi to get some infos. Do not be afraid to consult your doctor or dietician and feel free to make adjustments based on your body’s needs.

Thanks JG this is brilliant advice and I have and am learning a lot of things from you. I like the idea about the probiotics in the morning and that makes sense, I will start to do that and include the fruits you mentioned too. Fish, I love fish and eat lots of that (so do my dogs 🙂) brown rice is something I need to eat more of, I tend to eat white. Thank you for this, I'm a month into it now and really enjoying this way of eating and noticing the benefits too.

My wife has MS, 30 years now and it's getting pretty serious. We started skipping breakfast a year ago, and gradually introduced a one day per week 24 hour fast. We found we can handle the 24 hour fast pretty well, as long as we keep busy or take our mind off eating - especially around lunch time. So we are now on one meal a day for monday to friday, and hope to keep this up long term. As you said Laura, this has to be a long term commitment. I noticed previously that Helen has more energy on fasting days and that her fatigue and brain fog were always worse immediately after meals. So we will be watching with interest how you go :)

Hi Wesley, thank you for taking the time to write and share your's and Helen's experience with fasting. I think you are right, taking your mind off eating and food makes it a whole lot easier, I keep myself busy when my stomach starts calling for food! It's getting a lot easier now 6 weeks into it. I'm actually enjoying it and find having a challenge exciting especially when I know that there may be benefits from it. That's great that Helen has more energy, that is one thing I am finding too. I have noticed many things in these 6 weeks which I have made mental notes of, some good some bad so I've changed some of the things that I was doing and of course did more research on why I may have possibly been feeling the way I was. I will update as I go along as I think it's important. I was fasting 16/8 every day religiously for 3 1/2 weeks but I found that it didn't work for me. Today I'm heading for my first 22 hour fast, slow and gradual is what I've found with slight changes too. I'll post again in a month's time on this I think when I feel I've settled in more to a routine. Good luck with everything and nice to hear from you

Have you done a food intolerance test such as MRT or ALCAT? I did the MRT and found out that a lot of food that I was eating was showing a inflammation response. Cutting out foods that are causing a inflammation response will help with energy level. The MRT is said to be more accurate and it shows the level of each item tested, where the ALCAT only shows yes or no. The MRT only test for a 170 items and the ALCAT can test 400. I plan on doing the ALCAT soon myself. I do have RRMS.

I'll have to give intermittent fasting another try. I've tried this a couple years ago. My problem was after my morning exercising and working out I needed to eat soon after and not wait another four hours. I'll have to change my schedule around and give it another shot. I'm glad to here you are doing well and feeling the positive affects of fasting. Hopefully it also helps and gives you some relief with your migraines. Thanks for another great video Laura! 👍🙏

Hi 👋, hope you're doing good. I totally get what you mean about needing to eat soon after exercising, it's like your body is saying hello, Where's my fuel 🤔😂. I think the first week is the worst, the second week you kind of get into the swing of things. The good thing if you do try it again is that you can adapt it to a schedule that works well for you and around your routine. Yes! Do you know what, I've had one headache in the 2 weeks, fingers crossed it carries on being positive! Good luck, if you do try it again let me know how you go 🤞👍

I've been doing my own research on IF, and I'm really convinced of the possible benefits. But I had a go, and after one week I was terribly constipated. Constipation is a big issue for me (I already drink lots of water and eat lots of fibres, and take additional fibres and probiotics, to keep everything going). If you have any tips for me...
@lauraironstalksms
@lauraironstalksms 2 года назад
Yes I had this same issue and it was quite a problem for me too. How often are you fasting? Originally I was fasting every day but then I had the problem with constipation and I cut back on the time that I fasted. So I decided to fast every other day, that still didn't resolve the issue so now I fast literally when I feel I want to. No set regime. I no longer have the problem with constipation but I am still fasting (probably 4 times a month, sometimes more) I think the key is to do it but space it out and you'll still see the benefits.

@@lauraironstalksms I just started IF two weeks ago. I fasted every day (no breakfast), but I quit after one week because I was completely obstipated. I thought it would be easy, because I only have 1 kiwi and a coffee for breakfast, but apparently, I need the kiwi to keep everything going. I'll first try to get back to my 'usual' semi-constipation, and maybe then try what works for me (a few times a week/a month?). I don't need the weight loss, it's strictly the brain health I'm after (and maybe less fatigue - although the one week I did IF, I felt no difference with fatigue). What benefits do you experience with your regime of IF?
@lauraironstalksms
@lauraironstalksms 2 года назад
@@juliedeconinck963 hi, IF I'm being totally honest I wouldn't say that the benefits are seen straight away. I saw an increase in my energy, but like you I don't need to lose weight and am doing it purely for the atrophy benefits. Although interestingly enough, there were 2 months when I stopped completely, ate badly (and I mean really badly) and it didn't seem to affect me.

I found your video because I'm trying to experiment with fasting.... I'm finding it pretty difficult but I'm trying to tell myself that hunger is good... I don't believe myself when i say that though 😆

Intermittent fasting has one serious disadvantage: constipation! Long term IF, constipation will creep up on you and ruin your health. With IF you need to take good probiotics, prEbiotics, fibre... and on IF you retain less water (sorry to say, thats most of the weight you lost in the first weeks) so you need omega 3, GLA (like borage oil)... and drink a lot of water. IF is great for health, but it really bothers me all these experts don't mention what you have to watch out for.
@lauraironstalksms
@lauraironstalksms 3 года назад
I'm glad you mentioned this because it has been one of my side effects! I did read up and am still continuing to read up on it and making sure I am getting enough fibre and the probiotics with kefir. Thank you so much for the information though as yes, nothing mentioned about constipation or its bad points. Any other information would be much appreciated - but overall you think it's a good thing?

@@lauraironstalksms fasting is great for health, especially if you have autoimmune issues. You can try adding greek yogurt to your diet, it's great for gut health. You can also try 2 day fasting every week if IF causes you problems. And there's also fasting mimicking diet... Your body will tell you which suits you better. Just watch out for your gut health.
