Don't lie. I have the same condition. Drop foot on the right side and limp left leg with a tricky knee that can collapse at any time without warning. Left leg is just a decoration. I can not push up on it. I try to exercise daily, through pain, and see no progress.

I found a great workout video on RU-vid it’s chair fit with Nancy. It’s exercises sitting in a chair there is one for legs, arms, also a yoga and tai chi , and a cardio. My physical therapist told me about this and I like it very much! Nancy is a physical therapist and works with people with MS you should try it all you need is a chair!

Swimming is the ABSOLUTE best thing for those of us with MS! When I was swimming regularly, I felt very good and had a lot more energy. It is difficult to find a pool in these pandemic times. I’m slowly getting back into an exercise routine, focusing on walking and strength training. I must say, I’d love to ride a bike again or even roller-skate, but I’m terrified of falling! 😂 Great video, Dr. Boster!

Swimming was awesome until my pool was closed due to Covid. Now I’m rowing laps on the rowing machine since I can’t use my MS damaged legs for cycling or jogging.

Swimming is awesome. Oh, to get back in a pool. The public ones near me are too hot - I get Utoffhs easily - but the competition one at my old university was awesome. Cool enough that you had to get going but not so cold you froze!

Hi Dr. Boster, I have increased my walking from 3,000 steps a day up to 21,000/day now. This was done over a year or so, so I started low and worked my way up. When there is bad weather I just walk inside my home. Core exercises and light weights are also something I have added into my routine. Most of all listen to your body and know your limits!
@connych4796

My tip to help with walking is to wear curved sole/ rocker bottom trainers (brands like MBT, Sketchers, New Balance) and use Nordic Walking sticks. The curved soles reduce the impact of foot drop (I also wear an orthotic with them), and the sticks help with my balance and ability to take weight off of my leg and swing it forward. I struggle to walk short distances with flat shoes or barefoot, but can walk further & faster with my trainers/sticks combo.

I once was a great dancer. Recently I discovered the possibility of dancing with two (!) walking sticks as a balance aid; works great for me!

I really have enjoyed your video's. I'm 67 and 10 years in. I was a tennis player/instructor, runner and would stretch religiously. Flash forward a few decades . The recumbent trike has really saved me and a recumbent inclined in basement continues in bad weather.

I use an elliptical trainer three times a week (handles to grab for balance) and do strength training three days. I used to do a lot of hiking, but with foot drop I now can only walk for about 20 minutes with normal mobility, and then I start to be at risk of falling down. I love to cross country ski, and thought that I would have to give it up like hiking, but the elliptical training is very much like skiing, and so I have been able to maintain that during the winter months!

You're absolutely right! I do stretching everyday with husband helping me, especially with my scoliosis worsening. Every Saturday, I do physiotherapy at a rehab hospital. Love this video! Although I was extra active at work with lots of walking & up and down the stairs, stretching morning & evening, I did get multiple relapses as mine is highly active. Hopefully 2020 started off stopping MS from being highly active. Another thing I find helpful is making exercise fun, like rope skipping according to the functional reserve. Add to that, having an exercise partner helps. Thanks for targeting this element, really. 🙏

Hi Dr. Boster, I am happy to say that I just hit a year of doing 5 days a week of cardio and strength training! I have improved my muscle tone and balance greatly 💪 I have been doing videos on youtube and found several good channels. Body Project has good beginner and modified exercises for when you first start. I can do the hour long ones now and some HIIT classes. You are so right about how it affects everything and I am proud of myself now! Thanks for another great video 😊

I find great benefit from working in my garden. I don’t have power tools. I have a shovel or two, a rake, a hoe and a hose. My garden area is about 30’x50’. 2 years ago it was a big adobe block with a horse stomping around on it, packing it down real nice for me. I like a challenge and I picked a doozy! The garden is about 75-80 feet from my house. I have to water with a timer on my phone so I don’t space it out and flood my yard. I’ve done that before. But I’ve got to walk from wherever I am to go change the water position. During a day of watering and hauling manure in a wheelbarrow, or hoeing weeds or digging up a place for potatoes-general garden stuff- I get at least a mile a day under my feet. My neighborhood has quite a few crooks and stray dogs, both with ill intent, so I confine it to my 1.25 acre lot. But gardening is a full body activity and, if you’re doing it right, there’s cardio involved. I’m looking hard at the GRIT Freedom Chair for additional exercise. It’s a wheelchair/mountain bike hybrid made for off-road use. For a country boy, it would open a lot of doors for more activities like camping and fishing. I need a wheelchair for distances and my power wheelchair is not hiking trail or lake ready.

Thank you, Dr. B! LOVE the bloopers at the end... we all need more humor in our daily lives. I keep a list of physical therapy exercises for about 14-20 minutes of stretching (on my mattress). 2nd set are my "theraband exercises" for another later session (on wheelchair/scooter). Other activities: walker/rollator assisted laps up and down the hallway and hand strengthening with my hand grip, practice standing without holding on to anything while the wheelchair is just behind me and the rollator is within reach. Still recovering from a spine collapse followed by laminectomy with fusion so I'm happy to get some exercises in as I can.

Thank you so much for this video. You described perfectly what I go through since I do the same exercises I did when I was in high school which were intense 7 day a week 2 hour a day deals with weights and jump ropes. I tried that after I was diagnosed and suffered for a week. It was very discouraging. Now when I exercise I find myself pushing past my limit like I did when I was younger. Now you gave me a tool where I can start slow and not try to race against a shadow of me that unfortunately does not exist anymore. Thanks again, sir.

You must have read my mind today. It has made me crazy trying to figure out how to exercise with severe heat intolerance in Florida. I've tried everything but didn't know there might be medication as a last result. I'll look up any past videos you've talked about them. :) As for what I've tried so far to defeat Florida humidity/temps: Cooling cloths (great for mopping up litres of sweat), ice packs on cooling body locations (have to have enough ice packs to change every twenty minutes; archaic af but works), cooling vest (ugly, doesn't fit, too bulky to do anything but walk in), portable A/C unit for my bedroom (everyone with MS should have this), time of day/weather helps but is intermittent and takes planning, friends/family don't understand what 'heat intolerance' is and their houses are usually too hot so I melt and feel gross and rude, water really is magical but if you have social anxiety about your body (which I super do) and no personal pool that's a tough one, the cooling devices sold on Instagram/Facebook ads don't really work and are expensive/gimmicky (I tried the EMBR wave and wasn't impressed), last week I shaved my head for the second time and unfortunately that has been the most relief I've found (I have wigs, scarves and am a practicing Buddhist so whatevs) and lastly my best advice is that if you have heat intolerance don't move to Florida. The healthcare and weather are your enemies here and you can't win against the heat. At least I can't seem to. xD #helpIneedtomovetoCO

That's the great part of the 10 AM chair exercise classes of the Jerusalem Municipality's "Senior CitiZoom" program: Some teachers emphasize CV aerobics, others concentrate on stretches, increasing bone mass or even self-massage. For balance, I have a private session with a physiotherapist, cause THAT needs accompaniment! Thanks!!

That's great advice on how to gauge overdoing exercise. I've increased my strength training frequency and moved from working out in my home to the gym and wow, I had majorrrrr fatigue and sloth mode after that. I try to push through all the time, but I need to have more grace for myself while I go through this switch. I really enjoy the actionable information that you share., thank you.

Thank you for another excellent video. I discovered free fitness walking and walking with weights videos on RU-vid, they are just what I needed. Everything has improved, I've lost weight, my balance is better and I can do it all in the comfort of my home. This pandemic has brought me some benefits. I do three short sessions over the course of the day, and clock up 10,000 steps.

I have done tai chi for several years. It helps me with flexibility and balance. I stopped for awhile, because of fatigue issues and driving to the classes, but then then the classes went virtual because of the pandemic and now I take them again. I quit smoking in 2019. I started running to stay off the cigarettes and keep the weight down. I fell in love with running. I changed my diet, and lost 50 lbs. I started keeping better track of my runs and achieved the goal of running 1000 miles in less then 9 months. Absolute best shape I have ever been in. In January I started to notice constant tingles and numbness in my fingers. In February, I noticed tremors in my hips and thighs. In March, tingles down my spine. Last week I was diagnosed with MS. Shocked is a understatement. Really? Why now? All I have been able to think about is how I would have reacted if I received this news 2 years ago? I would have felt hopeless. Today, I have a routine. An idea how to stay active and in shape. It’s hard to think my body will betray me at some point. All I can do is accept that everything happens for a reason. At 40, I have never felt better. Now I’m in for the fight of my life, but I think I’m equipped. I think I’m ready.

After some years, have settled on "comfortable levels" of exercise, that fatigue allow. On good days, no issues, feel energetic. Problem is on bad days - Will become super lazy and will think of asking for "Steroids without side effects" Found, DMTs reduce number of bad days in a month - Best of luck to all PwMS

I was diagnosed on 1-2-20. In the fall of 2019, I could barely walk after a major flare that led to my diagnosis. Now, a year later and after some really hard work? I cycle about 11 miles per day (four times per week) on my NordicTrack S22i. I love spinning out my legs for a good 30-40 minutes. It's made such a huge difference--as these videos of yours, Dr. Boster, also have. Thank you for them. They have helped me to get through the worst year of my life.

Exercise can be hard work. It is my opinion that we all need to push ourselves a little when exercising. Every time, just 2 more steps. You need to be a little bit tired and possibly even worried that you have pushed it a bit far. Not mad exhaustion but definitely the slightly exhausted feeling. 27y with MS and over several years I have worked up to 8 miles of walking at 4 mph. It didn't come overnight and as I tire my right leg can drag a bit. I use poles. It doesn't trip me up, it is slightly inconvenient. But, I am aware that this has improved. All the rest too - strength, core, flexibility as well as CV. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

My first 2 yrs I had no ability to walk. I always exercised with my kids "our workout videos" until I was able to walk again. I'm way heavier than I used to be. But we always continue to swim, do yoga, badminton frisbee what ever we can do so I don't end up in a wheelchair for ever. But when I have a relapse standing and walking are basically a rollercoaster. I'm dizzy and have severe vertigo. But exercise is key.

If you start with small 2-5lb weights then slowly increase weight. You get atrophy when u don’t use the muscle. So any movement is better than none but you have to push some days even with pain. When you rest you recover and become stronger. Use cbd or marijuana for recovery.

No, you cannot exercise. :-( The Kieser Training (which I used to like a lot) has been closed for FOUR MONTHS and one day now, in Germany. In Luxemburg, it is still open, but in Luxemburg, finding a furnished apartment would be rather expensive, PLUS you have to quarantine after returning to Germany. ... In Bayreuth, it is open, too. That would be at least 5 hours and a half on the ICE, for around EUR 130 (single trip). In April, I'll be at my parents' place. From there, it's "only" three hours each way to Bayreuth, and it would cost me EUR 26 (return ticket). So, unless they close that one, too, in April I'll be able to exercise again. Even if I can go there only twice, because three hours is kind of long.

I was diagnosed with RRMS 12 years ago and my neurologist told me not to exercise. Then all the research said how important exercise is in slowing down progression. I just can’t get the 1st statement out of my head and I’m just scared. I’m progressing but just won’t exercise or push myself😢

Is elliptical machine exercise enough for ms? It is mostly legs and cardiovascular exercise, but it is the only exercise I like to do
