Multiple Takes in GarageBand
In this GarageBand Tutorial, I share how you can use one of GarageBand for Mac's most powerful tools to record multiple takes when capturing 'real' audio.
I also share how you can edit multiple takes together to create the best 'composite' performance.

In GB 10.4, if you don't see the take # on the region, go to GB preferences > General > in the Software Instrument Recording section, make sure Cycle on is set to "Create Takes" instead of "Merge". Otherwise, every take is Merged with the previous one. Thanks for the video!

This seems like a "small" tip to someone in the know but I've been stopping and starting every 15 seconds to go back to the beginning of tracks while testing out different loops so this just made my life a million times better!

That's some major stealth feature of GB - good job Patrick as usual. I rank it with the ability to cut-n-paste automation curves and automate FX parameters in GB - punching above it's weight as usual 🎶🎵

Thanks a lot. Especially for showing the effect of the take combination. What I usually got with singing, is that somehow the colour differs a little bit between manual takes. This might fix that.

Thanks for this! I not only learned how to split a take and mix/match the parts, but also learned the "command-T" instead of right clicking. Also, the music you were working with makes me want to listen to Stone Roses. Thanks for that! I'm gonna listen to some Stone Roses!

Been doing this with multiple takes in garage band and it works well. That said recently I have been playing with the Logic truth trial and the comping tool makes this process much more quick and easy. Apple are going to make me poor.

Ever since upgrading my mid2012 macbook pro to mojave, GB crashes regardless of how many, or even no, effects running. Thoughts?

Reach out to Apple. Though the 2012 Pro models are now classed as 'vintage' or 'obsolete', it's strange you would experience complete crashes with no plugins or effects in use. 👍

Having a problem seeing the takes folder, every time i set the metronome and record, i try to do like 3 takes but no folder shows up, the takes that i tried to record are literally layered over eachother, if i can have some help that would be much appreciated

Once spliced together from multiple takes is there a way to mix or join them together and perhaps dismissing the other takes?

Absolutely. You can remove any unused takes from the takes menu. 👍

is there a way to make only the cycle region be the recordable part in the track ? that way I could move my play head before the solo to follow along and then only the solo itself would be the recorded part

I'm having the same problem. I don't get the multi-take number in the upper left corner of the track and every time I loop back around, the previous take continues playing.

There is an option in GarageBand Preferences > MIDI to use takes instead of merging subsequent recordings. Sorry for taking to long to reply!

The problem I've run into is when I record multiple takes, then separate them into multiple tracks (for doubling, etc.) I sometimes get what I'l call 'phantom' splits - splits that I intentionally put in one track unintentionally appear in another take which is now in another track. What happens then is, that track with the 'phantom' won't allow me to work with anything after the 'split'. that portion of the track doesn't even appear in the Editor window.

Great tips - as always! Do you have any advice for the clicks that appear between regions? I know it's best to split where there is silence, but I'm recording classical guitar and there is sound from one end of the piece to the other!

I think you'll need to zoom in on the waveforms as much as you can and try to edit both sides of the take so that the waveforms do not cross over each other but rather join at a similar volume level. the sshould help get rid of the clicks you hear. Good luck.

When im editing on garage band i sometimes have multiple audio files. When i edit the plug-ins on one of the audio files it changes the plug-ins on all of the audio files. How do i stop this from happening. Its so annoying, i want different audio files to have different effects. Garage band is really pissing me off, if anyone can help that would be really appreciated.
