Update: The 35-30c 1100kv motor I used in this plane is no longer available. Two years after making this video, an E-flite Power 10 is now our motor of choice with an APC 12x6 Electric or an APC 12x6 Slow Fly. They work great with the new metal motor mount that is now being shipped with the plane!!!
This little video covers off the parts I used to complete this ARF kit from Multiplex and I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. Some of the parts were just hanging around the shop looking for something to do so they got to be part of the build. This is one plane that should be in everyone's hangar! Please note that the motor I used for this build was chosen for it's light weight. It is not rated for the amp draw it would get if you were to fly it at full throttle for extended periods of time. The amp draw at half throttle (where the plane likes to fly) however is so small that it is not an issue.
Build List:
Multiplex Fun Cub ARF Kit
Turnigy Plush 60 Amp ESC (to be swapped out for a 40 amp when they arrive)
Hitec HS 82 MG servos for the elevator and rudder
Hextronic 9 gram servos for the ailerons and flaps
HK Orange 6 channel receiver
APC 13x4 prop
2200 3s battery
Note: At our club, there are a couple of Fun Cubs that have the E-flite Power 10 motor and it seems like a very good choice.
Please feel free to rate and comment. If you really like to live on the edge, please subscribe and I'll keep the videos coming. Cheers.

The dislikes are from people who couldn't produce a video this good. Excellent vid, Bob!

This one is still top 1 on my wishlist, looks so much fun! Got a Hype U Can Fly now, but it really needs very short grass or asphalt to be able to land, so the FunCub would be a nice addition for those rougher terrains.

Where do they sometimes have the fun cub on sale for $99 ? Great info and I like getting to the point videos !! I live rcgroups but 500 pages just to get to the point , motor, esc, prop, battery , servos etc . I just don't have 2 days to read about it when all I want is a simple straight to the point video with the parts THAT WORK !! And then go fly lol. I'm new also but I've gotten very good with super cub and T28 and now all I hear is super cub !!! It's my next build . I'll say it is a pricy

E-Flite 10 is an ACE motor. I use the similar RimFire 10. I don't know why you've gotten dislikes??? its a good vid and you've been superb in narration.

Wish I would have seen this before I built my plane, I went with a D 3536/8 motor and it's making all kinds of nasty noise :( I will be adding the motor you recommended on my next HK order. I just want to get this thing in the air! A guy brought one to the Fvrcf field a couple weeks ago and I just had to have one!

The 35-30 1100kv motor has enough power? Can you "hang it" on the prop? Getting a fun cub, want to get it right first time around, and sounds like you have done the hard work. Have you stayed with all the electronics you have mentioned in video? Any problems with rx yet? Also, have you tried it with floats? Thanks, great video!!

The motor mount i have is the alloy one. Is that one fine? I haven't glued anything in place other then the supports for the wings and the hinges for the flaps, ailerons, rudder and elevators. I'm waiting for the HXT900 servo's to arrive and I'm searching for some Hitec ones you used but there hard to find. Any other servo's you would recommend? Sorry for all the questions but i really liked you build, which 40amp ESC did you use.

since they discontinued the sentry, i now use the hk blueseries/mystery for my 40a esc needs. it has 60a burst rating and has a 5.5v 4a sbec. plus it only weighs 30g (33g for plush40) and costs a few dollars less than the plush40.

Hi once again lol :D Does the Turnigy 3530 motor, mount straight up to the multiplex engine mount or did you have to modify them? mine hasn't arrived just yet, and i was just checking the measurements :S if you used a custom mount, which one did you use?

This video is 11 years old now. I would hope that there's a newer version lol. It must sell well because they revised it instead of cancelling it. Thanks for watching and happy flying to you.

@@SubToTripleThreatRC As I´m starting to measure current of my planes it´s pretty interesting the needed current on half throttle! I haven´t done that yet. But I was impressed with my new old 3D (Mini FuntanaX) plane. It has like a 3535 940 KV motor and a 40A ESC. With the prop that was on (a cutted 11x7 APC to 9,7x7 APC) it was "sucking" just 22A holding her. In the air with much less drag I suppose it would be much less? A friend from the field hast the same plane with a wooden 12x7. So I changed mine to 12x6 that I already had for my FunCub (together with an extremer 13x6,5 :P ). The current was then only 25A and I think around 290W. So still not too much. Since I have so many 4S LiPos that would fit great (from my T-28 1,1m) I´m wondering if I change the ESC that is only rated for 2-3S. Now I have been researching about UBEC/SBECs too. Thats interesting... I was wondering if I just go with an 4S pack on the old ESC but after reading a bit probably it isn´t a good idea at all. I´ll need to find out if the motor is able to hold the voltage too. Happy flying you too!

I was wondering about your choice of servos. The ads say 19g metal-geared MPXs for the flaps, but you used your HS82MGs equivalents in the fuse, and 9g HXTs elsewhere? I'm confused..

I'm getting ready to order up the FunCub. I'm a novice and don't know much about motors, speed controllers and such. Would you recommend buying the motor, speed control, etc separately, rather than buy the Multiplex Power Pack Kit? Thanks, Joe
@geneticallyinferior1
@geneticallyinferior1 11 лет назад
i think you have the escs confused. the sentry has the switching bec (that is why it has the ferrite core and the shield on the side opposite of the main fets for the noise) and all plush esc including and under 40a has the less desirable linear bec. that is to say only the plush 60a and 80a have switching becs. it sucks that they discontinued the sentry line. now i have to buy more expensive escs for 40a and under because i will only use a switching bec

Hello! I wanted to ask. The control horns on the wings...do those go toward the leading edge or the flaps/ailerons? The instructions I THINK say leading edge but then the provided control rods are then not long enough. So I don't know what to do. Does it even matter? And I am putting them at the 70 degree recommended angle. Thanks for all you can help with!

Thank you for the fun cub build list video. Im new to rc airplanes and im hooked! I am saving up now for a funcub and am printing off all your electronics for future reference. I wanted to ask tho. With the 35 amp draw of the motor in ADDITION to the pull of all the servos, is a 40amp ESC enough? I just bought a Spectrum DX6I TX and am using the Rx (AR6210) that came with it. Om assumong it has a buolt in BEC? If so, is it big enough to handle those servo loads? Thanks for your time!

How do you find it with the 40amp esc? which one did you get? I also got the same motor and servo's as you. Any pointers as mines not put together atm as im waiting for some of items to arrive.

@rgthd007 I'm in the same position as joe but I'm super novice. I thought about going the power pack route but seems pricey! I would really like to keep the budget low on this. Most of my spare money goes to Mountain bike Endurancing racing and would love to get started in the build and flying this plane soon.

Did you have to use two Y-splitters for the aileron and flap servos?
@coreyhill5202
@coreyhill5202 12 лет назад
Thanks for responding! One last question! I was just speaking w someone from a hobby shop who seems to think a 4 prop is too low, not enough pull and that I should go with a 6. What do u think? Also did the prop come with a sleeve? Because the engine shaft is 4mm and the prop shaft hole is 8mm, twice as big as the engine shaft

Nice video! I happened to have a ntm 3530 1400KV laying around? What size prop you reckon and what would you predict for outcome if I were to try it? Or should I just look for a more suitable motor? Thanks

Why did it no-longer have the destructive harmonic Vibration with the motor swap?????? Both motors are the same 1100 KV rating, the shorter can motor weighs less, what is the difference other than the weight????

Hi TripleThreatRC, I really enjoyed your video-THANKS. I could not see the amperage, voltage, etc as the meter contrast was too dark. Could you please tell us the amp, voltage figures in this comment section? Thanks Again, Ron

Ronald Torrito Hi Ron, I had to watch this old video again to get the numbers for you., I could see the readings just fine on my PC (?) Anyway, here are the numbers: Full Throttle = 27.0 amps and 318 watts Half Throttle- 2.1 amps and 25.7 watts As mentioned in the video description, this is an old video and most of us at our club are now using the E-filte Power 10 motor for the Fun Cub. I am building a new one for myself now with the Power 10 and have yet to check the numbers. Thanks for watching and happy flying! Cheers, Bob

Hi TripleThreatRC, You are so kind to give me those numbers! Thank you again. I have an Optima 480/910kv that I'm going to use. Not a big muscle motor but enough to do the job I hope. Not to mention its here and handy! I'm using a 12/8 prop and a 2200mah battery. Do you think that is enough motor? Ron
@SubToTripleThreatRC
@SubToTripleThreatRC 9 лет назад
Ronald Torrito Hi Ron, the motor sounds about right but I have no experience with it. I might go with a 12x6 prop. Make sure you check the amp draw to confirm that you're within the operating range of your ESC. Happy flying!

hi there, do u think the fun cub would make a better float plane than the multiplex mentor? not sure which one to get for floats? kind regards aidan mcatamney
@SubToTripleThreatRC
@SubToTripleThreatRC 8 лет назад
+aidan mcatamney Hi Adrian. I think both would be excellent on floats and the decision might come down to personal preference. If it was me, I would go with the Fun Cub because I have experience with it and know how capable it is and, it has (very effective) flaps while the Mentor has ailerons only. The other thing to consider is when you take the floats off and fly from land. In this case, I think the Fun Cub comes out ahead again. Happy flying to you!
