The Finalboss condition can really screw up you whole deck. I had a Awaken/Stygian deck with my Champion with 40+ thorns and some heavy hitter as backup. Well I got the condition that the boss can half my buffs....multiple times. At the end I lost with him having around 100 hp left. Meaning with full thorns I would have won. But hey the game tells you at the beginning of you run, what the final boss condition is sooo.... fair enough I guess.
definitely the hard counter to a deck where it relies on a low damage unit actually attacking. Had the same thing where my lynch-pin was a multistrike 2 sweep unit that applied 5 frost on each hit. I copied it twice and it was destroying til this boss roasted and toasted me.
ya, you apparently really have to pay attention to what the final boss has when you start your run so you don't build something that gets destroyed by it. i had this exact same thing happen to me just before i watched this video
I don't know what is the better part: NL being the most entretainning person in the multiverse, the great game, or the fact that the videos are 40+minutes
I believe your champion wasn't applying spell weakness at the end there, because its attack was 0, so he wasn't attacking at all (and that includes applying status effects)!
More specifically it couldn’t attack bc of the Sap but to get rid of the Sap it needed to attack so without the ability to buff the champion or remove debuffs, the champion literally couldn’t do anything but soak up damage
He also wasn't drawing any of the spell weakness spell since 3 out of his 5 draw went to holdout spells and 1 went to the endless unit. Meaning that each turn he was efficiently only drawing one card, making his 27 card deck seem huge.
I absolutely love this series. Really wasn't sure another game could ever fit the side series slot as well as Hades does, but this content rules and scratches my itch for more NL beautifully.
“I really don’t have as much healing as I’d like” - NL after literally purging all his healing spells and only leaving one regen spell in his deck. Don’t change NL😂
Almost more so than the series, I'm pogged up just because NL is closely watching what people want to see. Was worried this was going to be left as a Northernlion Tries because this is so clearly right up his alley.
I have been on multi level trains in Chicago. It’s been years since I’ve been back home so no idea if they are still a thing. But they do exist. But like the other guy said probably just for flow of combat.
in vertical train you can have a staircase in the middle, in horizontal one it would be weird for enemies to just go past your units and enter the next wagon
yo in addition to the POG RAIN etc. etc. I just wanna say how much I appreciate the long episodes. I know it ends up being 3x the amount of work to keep daily episodes of this length, but it also results in 3x the dopamine hit when I see that video pop up
What screw NL over at the end was having 3 holdovers in a hand of 5, he couldn't cycle through his cards and do his spell weakness combo or building up the floors. I guess you can have too much of a good thing.
The deck killed him - no tank, no damage. When champion got stuck due to sap nothing which he could draw could save him. This boss can be killed by spellweackness but you would have to get a sweeping unit with quite a lot of attack, and a decent tank to stay in front. He didn't know what this boss does though so good performance nethertheless. I was expecting him to die much faster.
@@coopercoin i thought it was a good deck really. i thought it has a chance, until i realize that unit with 0 attack literally doesn't attack, hence not triggering the spell weakness.
@@somewhatsomehow1491 he would need to apply around 40 spell weaknes to kill 2000 hp boss by helix. His whole lineup have like 90 hp, and boss is doing 30dmg per turn. I would say even if the boss was laying on the ground doing nothing it would not change much - the loss wouldn't be that dramatic though.
Giving his champion quick would have probably saved him, what really killed him is not being able to kill the 10x2/3 units on the bottom floor because of the tanks in front with 160 hp. While having 3 holdover is bad, it's only bad if he plays all 3, having 3 makes sure he draws atleast one in a reliable fashion. Thorned having Endless also probably didn't help since he drew it every turn, making it 4 cards recycled and only 1 new card per turn in a 20+ card pool, imo he should have duplicated his spell weakness card.
100 damage spells for 0 skill points are definitely obtainable in the game. This game is great because it lets you make completely broken builds that are really fun to make and play that somehow or another end up failing to beat the even more broken final boss or his broken little minions.
@@tracyh5751 yes but that's pretty clearly not what I'm talking about. I meant just a spell that does 100 damage with no extra conditions attached like Ryan saw this spell at first, there's obviously ways to get other spells to that level but you have to upgrade them, and the ones that can reach that with no upgrades (spell weakness aside) do have conditions, don't just 100 damage for free. Imp-olate requires you to have imps in the deck which at first seems like not that much, but keep in mind you need to first find those imps and then they make your deck THICCer so you draw the spell less often until you play all of them, which is not a small thing. Inferno is the closest thing and costs 3 energy, you can take it to 0 with the extra rune slot relic or tethis and it even has piercing, but again that requires conditions to be met and it hits your units. And just in case I'd like to clarify this wasn't meant in a way to say that our dear egg is stupid or bad at the game, he's just starting, just pointing out a hilarious moment.
Great run and heres my constructive criticism: I think the duplicating of Helical probably screwed you, whilst its 50 damage is huge for spell weakness, only one spell gets to consume the spell weakness. So aslong as you can get 1 guaranteed spell on the turn spell weakness has built up than its fine. 3 is excessive, 2 does allow spreading damage across floors against the minions before boss. What the bigger issue was, was that in the boss battle, you had 3 Helical crystalis in combination with an infinite thorned hollow. As a result of this (hollow dying) and 5 card draw you were drawing: 3 Helix, 1 Thorned and 1 other card (essentially 1 draw). Which made it impossible to play many of the cards in your deck - Such as spell weakness enablers. Definitely more of a learn from experience sort of issue since 150 spell damage per turn with helix would seem extremely good to really anyone especially after the 2 upgrade invested. Highlights importance of either card draw - or importance of not flooding the top of your deck with holdover. As you were being limited to drawing only one new card per turn. Love the content, and am pogging up for more monster train.
I have never been more invested in the story arc of another person's mouse but this is the greatest resolution to the whiplash inducing movement before. Also more Monster Train has me pogged out of my freaking mind!
When NL does 3 damage to the tanky guy in the back getting rid of the spell weakness instead of just icing the guy in the front with 2 hp to bring the big guy to the front.
Another great run. I've been binge watching the Slay the Spire series (only about 100 episodes left!) and it's very evident all of NLs experience over 700ish episodes of Slay the Spire carried over into this game. NL is improving in this game at a much faster pace than he did with Spire. I realize that one of my favorite things about watching NL is seeing his progress as he improves at these games. Something about that is a lot more interesting to me than watching someone that's already a master at the game they're playing. Although, once NL gets real good at a game, the banter is increased by 5000%, which is also very entertaining.
Great video egg! I think the reason you weren't drawing your spell weakness cards at the end was because you had 3 hold over spells and an endless minion that were taking up all of your draw Holdover is powerful but I think you need more draw to compensate for it Looking forward to the next video!

I bought the game 5 minutes after it released. Beat the game during the tutorial run, spent like 15 hours in it the past 2 days. Thank you for sharing it NL, and keep up the great vibes :D
I really can't wait to see NL unlock the last two clans and play with them. I think they're definitely the most fun and weird. Umbra is easily the best clan imo.
spell weakness is used up when that unit is attacked by a spell, so having 3 helical crystals is not that great, only the first one gets the benefit of the spell weakness. NL was carried by the first one killing the first several bosses so he was never able to see the lack of sustain
So, you had a pretty solid run going on here, but there were a few clutch mistakes that really broke it. For starters, Sap from Seraph killed your spell weakness in the final fight, and that was ultimately the most devastating problem. Steel Enhancers on Tethys would have restored your ability to get Spell Weakness stacks. Before that, removing Restores before Train Stewards was a mistake. While they are ordinarily not strong cards, that would have served a dual purpose here, by allowing you Incant triggers, and also letting you stack Rejuv on your Thorned Hollow. The biggest overall mistake that we see you making on this runs is that you are focusing on individually good cards, building small synergies with (a spell + a unit), for instance. Try to draft your deck in such a way that you're building floors, not small synergies. In this instance, Thorned Hollow + Tethys was a great way to go for the bottom floor. Big Rejuvenation stacks on the Hollow to protect Tethys while building Tethys to apply tons of Spell Weakness. You also had a solid concept for the middle floor with the Guard of the Unnamed and the Nameless Siren, where both of these units benefit from Incant triggers. The end result of the 2 floors would be enemies entering, low HP ones being obliterated by sweep, and the larger ones being stacked massively with Spell Weakness, moving to the second floor, and getting crushed by spells, spells that also buffed the units there, which gives you the raw damage you need to take down a boss.
24:03 OOF. Holdover is great; "don't get me wrong", legit my favourite spell upgrade. But you need to be aware that if you have 3 heldover cards, you're only drawing 2 new cards each turn, so it takes >10 turns to get through your deck. Hence the really bad draw on spell weakness towards the end there NL. If you'd taken a heldover spell weakness it would have been a little better, but you still kinda need the other cards in your deck every turn too. You also had a lot of cheap cards, so really it would have been a very good play to take +1 draw from the second boss.
Just a tip: the artifact that deals 100 damage to enemies when you play a curse, counts for ALL curses. Those cards enemies add to your hand that say "play or your pyre takes damage" now deal 100 damage.
Nope, the ‘blights’ that deal 100 dmg are a different card type to the ‘curse’ (or whatever they’re called) that enemies add to your hand. I know this because I made this exact mistake and misplayed so badly I lost the run.
I can’t fathom the mental gymnastics needed to decide that endless is good on thrones hollow. Not only does it make it way less durable because of the lost upgrade slot but you also reset the spikes every time you have to replay it.
Great episode, some good learning moments. Biggest mistake near the end was skipping over the consistent buffs you could have put on your champion, he had no attack so wasn't getting any spell weakness stacks. Anyways loving the content and keep pumping the train, CHU CHU!
Love the series. One thing I'm not sure if you knew, you can cast spells on nothing to trigger holdover and incants. You don't have to target something
Every Stygian run I've had so far has been exactly like this one in the final boss room. Everything else is pretty smooth, and then the mobs start marching in doing 6x the damage of the previous room and my champion rips.
This game has me pogged to the highest degree. You got pretty hard countered by that sap at the end making it so your champion couldn’t apply spell weakness.
Ryab a quick note, duplicating the 25 damage x 2 card 3 times made it so you were essentially only drawing 2 cards at a time, that's why you didnt see any of your spell weakness
Nice episode! Lots of new mechanics so learning what is the best takes some time. Definitely think you could have gone with a thinner deck, 27 cards is a lot. Game didn't offer too many healing cards so it was a tough run either way.
Channelsong hitting the Custodian brought me back to having 2 channelsongs hitting the 1 imp I had and I've never picked the card since ( even though I recognize how lit it can be )
This combo of clans is how I got my first win. I did incant triggers mixed with three copies of the jar of spikes. I had like 4+ 0 cost draw spells for incanting each turn.
Im loving the series Nl! A big thing to have in mind: when you are using hollows dont remove your healing spells, you kinda killed it with that move, the hollow's are insanely good but only if you constantly feed them heals, the 5 regen card takes too long to work and you only had like one or two of those, regen is good only as an extra or if you have insane amounts of it. So never remove all your heals (unless you have like more than two glimmers with extra spell power or something like that)
