Fundamentally, the "selected tracks via master" method only works if nothing in the Master effects chain is non-linear. Anything like compression, limiting, distortion, will make the sum of these tracks different from the overall mix.
I would advise against rendering via master, as whatever compressing/limiting applied will absolutely not react the same way with individual tracks than it does with the full mix. This may lead to worse result than bypassing the master. Just my 0,02€ :-)
Are you shure? When you have for example ssl comp (as glue) on master and render drums as "stems via master" then Reaper render drums together with other tracks but you only get just "Drums.wav".
This is a good but more "advanced" point. The actual correct way to do it is to sidechain any compression on the 2 buss so that it reacts to the whole mix, even when it's playing certain instruments.
@@REAPERMania Excellent and very timely video as always. Two questions related to this point... 1) for multitrack consolidations do you usually include the insert effects on each track? 2) does make sense to keep a separate set of send effects per stem? Ie, don't share same reverb between guitars and synths, for example.?
@@tomo3479 With level-sensitive effects such as compression and limiting, applying them on an individual track is different than on a sum (mix) of tracks. Th simple explanation is that a limiter would only kick in at a high signal level, but when essentially soloing individual tracks, the level may never reach that threshold like it would with a full mix. So mixing those stems could create clipping that wouldn't have been present in the original mix, even with the exact same levels.
If anyone can point me in the right direction, Im hoping it is you. In April I set up an in ear monitoring/ recording unit for my band's live performance. Im running an xr18 mixer into a windows 10 laptop ( I've tried 2 different ones) Im using reaper to send backing tracks and a click and using audio inputs 1-12 for the live instruments and midi from the drums. And recording those usb sends into reaper. However 2 weeks ago I can no longer do that cuz when I hit record, reaper freezes 9 sec in and goes into not responding. I have disarmed each of the 12 recording tracks down to 1 midi track and 1 L&R stereo track. That is all that will record without freezing... Any ideas?
Hi kenny can you do a tutorial in reaper for how to split the master bus, like a multi mono and stereo master bus or multi mono processing in reaper I search this on youtube there's no tutorial about this.
Correct. They start from the beginning of the project and you get one file per track. So if you drag them into any other DAW, they'll line up perfectly.
Stems would Not give any control to lower any specific levels in a bussed out stereo track..If there is too much Hugh hat, and you send drums stereo track...good luck..only can do this with multutracking...its a bypass from learning the real stuff program...but will get you learning some how to record yourself
Kenny love love love all of your tutorials. I did find the background music on this one rather distracting making it harder to focus on your instruction. Don't know if you are trying something new so I thought I give you some feedback. Again thank you sooooo much for all of the excellent tutorials!!
@@REAPERMania I can appreciate your desire to make it the best experience that it can be and quite possibly I'm the only one who feels this way. For me I rather enjoy the clarity of just your voice. Thank you again! What I have learned from you over the last year has been life changing.
@@REAPERMania you're never boring Kenny. I'll watch videos and have them playing in the background as I go about my day then note down then watch them again in my studio when I need to work on the particular thing I watched the video in the first place. Meaning I'll watch a video twice or three times and never be bored
