Well, there are cultures and families where elders and their opinions are respected. Especially if they are religious, they might prefer more modest take on the wedding dress. Is it really so bad to compromize? It is not like the mom demanded her to be dressed from neck to toe. She just asked to be a bit more modest, which was totally achievable without compromizing the style.

It shouldn't matter! Decency is decency. You cover up in God's house. No amount of centuries should take away from decency and respect.
