ReactOS is a free, open source windows clone. It is written in C and C++ completely from scratch and is not based on the Linux kernel or even UNIX. It's intended to be binary compatible with application software and device drivers made for Microsoft Windows NT versions 5.x and up (Windows 2000 and its successors).

The mother in this video uses Windows XP (2001) as her main OS duel booted with Elementary OS (a fast Linux distro). Would you like to see her try out Linux, Mac, Windows or other operating systems through history such as OS/360 (1966)? Then give your suggestions in the comments section. Give this video lots of likes, views, favorites and comments if you want my mum to try out other operating systems. I am open to any operating system suggestions you give especially if these videos go semi-viral (over 100,000 views). This channel is dedicated to me "introducing" people (mum, dad, me) to different operating systems they have never used before and leaving them to suffer in confusion struggling to do anything in an unknown computer environment... or see if these other operating systems are better than Microsoft Windows.

Yep, it came out 30th May 2013. We wont be trying reactOS again anytime soon though since we need to reach out to heaps more operating systems first before we retry newer versions of ones we have done.

ReactOS is compatible with Windows Themes as well. I use ReactOS 0.4.11 and it is compatible with the Windows XP Royale theme (Zune, Royale N and Embedded themes will also probably work) Even the Plex and Luna themes work!

ReactOS is the cleanest version of an ms-windows compatible operating system, and was the very first one that i could run on a live-cd - it's a really amazing project! :)

The intro is staying as it is, so far you are one of the only people to say they don't like it. Out of interest though why don't you like the intro? The only reason I could think of is that its a little bit long.

+Nathan Premo there used to be an IBM operating system that was binary compatible with Windows 98 and Microsoft was chill with it until IBM was caught using Microsoft drivers to run their OS and then Microsoft sued them

I know... But there are too many other operating systems to be trying to redo Ubuntu or any other Linux distro unless there is at least 5 years between the versions. On another note though I am updating Ubuntu 12.10 on my portable hard drive to Ubuntu 13.04.

7 years later this OS is still about the same kind of "stability" and compatibility. Lots of problems still there and it's nowhere near replacing Windows. Although, it's fun to try once in 5 years :)

You and your mom touched on one of the main strengths of a free, open-source operating system like this: its low cost and ability to work on older hardware. Because of that, it has great use in 3rd world and developing countries where the cost of Windows is prohibitive.

The reason that the Input & Help tabs etc. in the DIagnostics are blank may be because you are emulating. Also I can tell you had a power outage because the clock keeps blinking in the background :P

Oh no I'm sorry I haven't used react OS in a few years. It was TERRIBLE then. But I went to their website and saw they did update it early this year. It works great now, no driver problems, crashes, bug fixes. They fixed almost everything and I'm actually running it as my host OS again. I tried to delete that comment after I saw they fixed everything but I couldn't figure it out.

I think the important point to get across to your mum is that its attempting to be an exact clone of windows, as in looking 90% the same and to be able to run windows applications but been free.. So anything Windows has been renamed to React, and the logos from the flag to this logo. But everything else attempts to be the same, it was written from scratch because anything copied would make huge lawsuits, I really think its a great concept, but for now not stable enough for daily use :)

I may switch to this in the future, even if I'm a linux junkie, due to the WINE layer it has in it that might be compatible with old windows programmes. bare in mind, that it's not finished yet. they haven't gotten to version 1. Also, note that it has a low , as of now, VERY low memory footprint and may soon go 64-bit. when I ran it on a test machine, it only took 78mb to run the system

dxdiag in windows is used to mostly to see directx version. ReactOS Diagnostic is a copy of dxdiag and ReactX

RTFM wine only works for NT software and not 9x. For that you need an OS like FreeDOS or DOSBox.

I used to do technical support over the phone, and I asked the customer to go into "My Computer" and he actually said "What's that?". I asked him if he's using Microsoft Windows. He said yes, but he'd never seen nor heard of any such thing as "My Computer". That really confused me.

In fact, React OS system is fast enough. I think that you need to try VirtualBox. Also you may try to install outdated .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 using ReactOS Applications Manager. But using Mono .Net Framework looks like the best option for you.
