Your Mums computer skills have improved so much over the short time of having this channel, she has so much more common sense on whats going on and how things work.. If this video was several months ago she would of never of found the text editor window when she minimized it, and wouldn't know how to close things because of the different x button, its really nice to see your Mum enjoying making these videos and learning things too! My Mum would not have the patience to do this at all haha :)
Hi Phillip And Diana!! am a 13 year old boy in the UK I love technology like you do !! I can spend hours exploring and modifying different operating systems!! do another youtube account and vlog every day thats if you remember and not to tired...+osfirsttimer
love your videos. I love the way you guys explain the operating systems in a simple manner. also, i'd like to see a video of you guys trying out windows 10. I'm looking forward to it ☺
It's unbelievable how young you are. You're so young, and you already know so many operating systems. And it's more amazing that your mother is willing to learn about all those operating systems too.
He's interested in this kind of thing. He does his research, and any young person could do it as long as they were interested in doing so. Not many people are interested in doing what he does, so he is just one of the few who aren't too lazy to do so. But I understand what you mean, it is pretty awesome to see someone working hard like he does.
yeah, People like OSFirstTimer make me feel so old. And I'm just 33. As Louis Armstrong used to sing "I see babies crying. I watch them grow. They learn much more than I'll ever know, and I think to myself 'What a wonderful world!'
It's cool you can see the OS through the logo of my shirt almost like it's a window into my body showing what operating system I run... I wouldn't be running Unixware if I was an operating system though ;)
I don't know where to start! I know that you are comparing ancient OSs, but it is obvious that more modern OSs will be better evolved than something from 1993(or so) which is when CDE came to the fore. It was designed by committee, and ended up being an evolution of Motif and HP VUE which were older still. At the time, it used IBM Presentation Manager window decorations, which became common across many different window managers including OS/2 and Windows NT desktop, which ultimately spawned Windows 95. So it is no big surprise that the decorations and actions were broadly similar. Although I really hated it, it was a step forward for graphical interfaces on UNIX, and can really do so much more than you could demonstrate (for example, the action manager allowed you to configure triggered actions for various events, including network related events from other systems). Remember, it pre-dated KDE and Gnome, and it was a pretty much common interface on all major UNIX varients from IBM, DEC, HP, Sun etc. And it's close to 20 years old now! IBM still ship it as the supported graphical interface for their AIX systems, although you are unlikely to use one of those as a personal computer!
Diana commenting on the beep feature....I don't think she'd EVER want to exist in a programming class. Every single class I've been in has used a beep function to annoy everyone within a mile radius of the lab, and it's awesome, and the teacher/prof always allows it because we're programmers.
It's great that there is HD now but it's always sad that the RU-vid 720p is never as good as the 720p of the original video file. RU-vid is always decreasing the quality of these videos and it really annoys me. At the same time though peoples internet would just die with these episodes being 500 megabytes to 1 gig each in 720p with the original 720p quality file size. Completely uncompressed this video is 77 gigabytes so let's just say this video is highly compressed! (only 200 meg on RU-vid)
Mac OS X 10.7-present have the mission control, which allows you to have multiple desktops. Also in windows 10, it has multiple desktops. They do not, however, have custom icons. Very cool OS. Thanks for doing this one, man!
I like your videos. As someone like you who knows a bit more than usual users I feel like you are able to come down to their level. Some folks might make remarks about the exact conditions and facts but in my mind you do great. When you know a lot sometimes it can cast shade on those who don't. Language matters and no matter what the video tells me I can see why and how you say what you do. Keep up the good work. I am glad your mom has you to influence her experience and broaden her horizons.
Yea... you always seem to notice when I do. Its just so easily accessible to do it that way since I know those pre setup VMware images will always work without a problem.
Well CDE has certain features similar (especially the window buttons and border as well as the minimize to icon feature) to Windows 3.1 from the early 1990's so it makes sense that CDE is quite old and that Solaris tried to phase it out in 2001.
I just do an hour or so of research before making each video... I still make mistakes sometimes and leave out some details accidentally. The RISC OS video was a prime example of how I had done lots of research but still annoyed professional RISC OS users with slightly lacking information in some areas of the video. My main issue was forgetting to middle click in RISC OS at some points while remembering to at others.
the flickering has to do with the fact that the camera is American made but the computer is connected to the Australian power grid, so they alternate at different frequencies. tom scott has an interesting video on it.
Yea I had 6 desktop environments on my Linux hard drive (1 terabyte) at one point but due to it messing up elements and icon sizes across the environments I just decided to stick to gnome 3.6
First of all, Thanks Phil for repling and second, can you make a video about how to install FreeDOS on VirtualBox? If you did that would be AWESOME!! Thanks for making really cool videos! I have learnt A LOT from you.
Well, just to let you know, CDE was descended from an older interface called Motif, which Microsoft had a hand in developing the look and feel. Actually, OS/2 1.3 was the first to adopt the look, and Microsoft and IBM made the standard for UNIX so that UNIX users would have a decent GUI and not feel out of place. Remember, this was the compatibilty craze of the 1980s, so they wanted to make sure that users would be able to use all of the successors of DOS, whatever they may have become. --Kyle
you can install several Desktop environments on Linux and other OS`s as well. Mageia for example asks you which Desktop environment you want to use and gives you the option to install several. i personally install KDE on every Linux system i have, though i often install more for variety and having separate Desktop environments for separate purposes is pretty cool (KDE for work, Unity for browsing, Gnome for Entertainment. etc)
While I'm no Unix/Linux expert, I still am quite knowledgeable using the various OS versions available. Even so, I just wanted to say that your videos are great to watch and very informative even for a relatively experienced user. Keep up the GREAT work guys!!!
I've been thinking about doing it in 1080p but my monitor can't even display 1080p (or maybe its my graphics card) and the time it would take to upload 720p would just be a nightmare. My camera can record in 1080p HD but honestly the difference is barely noticeable.
Ubuntu has multidesktops. And a tip for your surface pro: Make things larger. Go to Start search, type in "make text", touch settings, and click "Make text and other items larger on your screen.".
I know... I've read into all that and how they say if you are only going to say "Linux" you might as well say GNU instead because Linux is just the kernel rather than the OS... honestly I just call it Linux because its known more widely as just Linux and shorter to say and type than GNU/Linux.
Yeah they should try that. KDE and Trinity are like Gnome and Mate. I heard there is Kubuntu with Trinity desktop but there should be Ubuntu with Mate desktop, and it should have all the themes from previous Ubuntu versions, including the one from 5.10.
17:56 befuddled pointing at the nsmail folder and not knowing what the heck that was. Heh, this was pretty common in Linux land in early 2000s, I saw several newbies try out Netscape and, in a few moments, wondering what the heck "nsmail" was. People don't react too well when random folders mysteriously appear. =)
It's now going to be once a fortnight from this point on because I can't keep up with one per week anymore. I'm exhausted from my full time job as childcare worker looking after 16 toddlers in a room at once 5 days per week... 8.5 hours of this per day is enough to drain all the energy from anybody.
It truly would be way too difficult for her. Even I had a quick look at it and struggled just to get the interface to load and even looking at tutorials on how to use the interface just made me extremely confused.
I'm curious why this never got popular... is it flawed or something? I mean, people always rant about how a popular OS like windows 8 is impossible to use... yet it's their faults that they didn't give the more easy-to-use operating systems a chance. So I would assume the "easier" OS's are easier to use?
Besides being intended mainly for server use, cost was prohibitive for workstation use. A single license cost $799. Not too bad if you're buying a multi-thousand dollar workstation that came with UnixWare included, but quite pricey as a home user while Linux was free (and other Unixes cost far less). Xinuos is still developing and selling SCO UnixWare. No idea what their current pricing is, but I'm sure it'll be largely the same.
Invader GIR Well, my point is, that OS's that seemingly have been easier to used died off and then other companies that stayed popular went on to make harder to use OS's??? like what???
Whenever you see the [-] button on the top left side of the window you can simply doubleclick it to close the window. This behavior is common in many operating systems since 1980.
True. However, she is not wise in the way of these OS's. She is a first timer to the individuals, not in general. I'm sure somebody's gonna call me an idiot and they knew that already, but I had to get it off my chest. Ahh, feels better already. 😀
I've already thought of that... I use that method on the terrified mum channel but it doesn't really work for this channel. Also at many points fine details need to be seen on the screen and at points the picture in picture may cover up important elements... and don't even get me started with issues of getting screen recording software for each operating system! And synchronising highly edited video streams would be hell!
Remeber that Windows XP and Mac OS X are from 2001. Remember KDE 3.1.x came out in 2003... That's just not an argument for it being absolutely out of date. CDE is from the mid ´1995, I believe.
It is not still maintained by The SCO Group. It's a very sad tale. In the early 2000s, TSG under the leadership of a man named Darl McBride, the company changed it's direction from actually making software to flimsy lawsuits. It was not profitable for the company, but McBride and his cronies personally managed to make a small fortune while the company was driven into the ground. There are many articles and websites which tell the full story.
oh, well it really depends on the distro that you use. Some include some features like wine, chromium, Mozilla Thunderbird, and lots of other stuff. I haven't really explored much yet.
TL;DR Old SCO != SCO Group. This is the first version of UnixWare that Caldera contributed to. Basically Caldera bought out a trusted name in the software industry, changed their name to something resembling the original SCO("Hey, it's us! Remember, we haven't changed!"), and abused that trust the customers still had in them by suing them for using Linux. In the 90s old SCO made some quality stuff, and they weren't a bully at all. They actually made software FOR Linux back then.
i believe you should write the iso link and post the download so we don't have to ask "Where did you get the iso? where did you get it? Where did you get it?"
good videos lol, these 2 lines were brilliant: "How come you cant just have a normal calculator in there?" "Because these people using these aren't normal people!"
