The real reason Shekar Gupta is being reasonable on this topic is he watched the interview between rajdeep and Fadnavis where Fadnavis ripped Rajdeep a new a/h with facts figures and logic. Lol
i have stopped listening to Arnab. too much noise. I like Shekhar Gupta and will respect this views, though sometimes my BP goes up when he throws some googlies. hehe
I was a big fan of Ravish but he lost all my respect by not getting deep into details and interviewing only the activists and celebrities and giving one sided view
Love that Narmada Dam story, govt schooled the Medha Patekars and the gang, even Amir khan was part of that gang, one more reason to believe in BJP's infrastructural projects
I agree that Mr. Gupta's summary of the Narmada Dam project was very useful and exposes the virulence of foreign NGOs hell-bent on blocking the country's rise, using local useful idiots in their payrol
Liberals and lefties "claim" that they operate on facts and logic to assume some sort of intellectual superiority , but in case after case like Aarey, it just highlights they operate on nothing more than raw emotions. Hypocrisy and liberalism are actually synonyms. :))

In the long run the carbon emissions saved by metro line by decressing congestion from roads far outweighs the carbon sequestration potential of several 100 trees.
@@fedoanuja you are not making sense. There is need to be a middle way, complete halt to infra development is not the solution. Saving several hundred trees in hopes of having minute carbon storage and O2 potential is nothing in front of saving lakhs of tonns of carbon released if metro line is made. This is the best long term solution. Also eventually the new sowed trees and transplanted ones will fill the apparent O2 deficit. Its a win win. @@leninyoh bro what you just proposed is called the argument from authority fallacy, SG did good on this video but that doesn't mean each and every video he makes is to be considered gospel. No one lies every time they open their mouth, by this logic even the person who is most prone to lying can be expected to speak the truth however rare that may be. Also when you believe something, it has to be based on hard verifiable facts and not on who said what. The last thing people can respectfully disagree, if you are talking about credibility then that is not something to be based on one instance rather on the general trend, I have followed SG for some time and regularly I find him to be contradicting stuff he himself had said in some other video in a similar context The last thing again😅 people who criticize should not be considered as siding with bjp, for I am here to get a different perspective fully aware that it might be opposing to one I have, isn't that being open-minded. cheers.
I do not support the protests, government has taken reasonable & sufficient steps in this regard. And it's only 0.2% of the total trees in Aarey. We can try to persuade govt to make laws for declaration of Forest Areas.
well, it's no secret. There are lot of folks like you and me that see through the hypocrisy of these protestors, these protestors don't represent anybody except themselves. They have fooled themselves into believing that they're saving the world. If they really cared even half as much as they pretend to care about these trees, they would actually be thinking on the lines of what you've suggested. conserving forests and keeping a check on drastically reducing green cover is just one thing there are many more things that can be done to fight climate change. reducing carbon emissions and stricter regulation has to be focussed on greatly. Since I was in school some fifteen years ago studying about air pollution and such things always found that the answer to controlling pollution is developing public transport, yet nothing is being done about that for so many years and now when we have actually taken steps in the right direction there is opposition from all quarters.
Well what it's did was open aarey for further exploitations, why do you think why is government is so active on this issue, why would they go in middle of night to kill trees . They want this area desperately at any cost . They could move shed two killometer ahead. But no , they wanna please builder mafia .
@@niteshagate474 mate, you need to mature. Don't have prejudices. Activists were not against metro. They were against the chosen location of shed. Read up.

So true They are protesting carbon emissions etc but a peek into their houses will give us an idea of how much electricity water and fuel is being used on a daily basis at an extravagant rate . I guess it will be incomparable to whats being used in the indian avg household

37 mins? Land given by govt to St Peter's Bandra for cemetery (Christians (and jews and muslims too) should move to cremations - far more hygienic and space-saving). Said plot lies unused. Metro has a need. Govt reassigns said land to Metro project that is necessary in the interest of the masses. Activists get mobilized by a foreign funded NGO (LRO) to oppose said Metro shed construction. Bogus Bollywood twits get involved and SC sticks its nose in to puts a brake on tree-cutting. But, Govt for once, gets the 2.1K trees felled to facilitate the commuter friendly metro project. I guess, the Bollywood dim-bulb hypocrites/elites didn't mind Film City tree cutting and the Royal Palm development/Golf course (both of which are much larger in square footage with many more trees felled). So, this tempest in a tea-cup is about foreign NGOs interfering with progress in India. This took me a lot less than 37 mins to type :)

You talk of back Bay, do you not realise that plans can be and should be changed as per feasibility, aarey was also given all the required clearances, so impeding that project is totally uncalled-for. Yes you may not like it, but I will put out my perspective on things that affect me, this is one of those issues, the infrastructure is crumbling especially public transport, Aarey can be used to bury dead people, can be used for resorts and farmhouses, it can also be used to house a film City, but a tiny part of it can't be used for building infrastructure, what non sense is that, what arrogance is that? The parties involved they all have their vested interest but I as a tax passing citizen, the one who will cover for the escalated cost of this project by paying higher fares, the one why suffers not just cause the project keeps getting delayed but is also suffering cause of being forced to use the roads that are dug up for these projects to be built upon. I sir have a stake in it and I'm not criticizing for the sake of it, I have so much to lose cause of these fools who are trying to play "captain planet", they don't know head or tail of anything, fuelled just by raw emotion and propaganda spread by vanshakti. The whole protest seems to be a spillover effect Greta Thunberg's speech 😅 Seriously all this chaos for 0.2% trees of which half are not useful to their purpose and 7-800 are being moved to some other place.
talking in percentages is stupid. if you disappear right now, the world's population doesn't change by more than 0.2%. It's not even close to 0.2%. That doesn't mean there's no problem at all if you disappear.

Copied from a public comment: Mumbai, unlike Delhi, is a barren city. One hardly notices greenery there and it's very disturbing. For all its faults, Delhi roads have lush green, massive Neem, Peepal, Mango-Jaamun trees and importantly, it has city lungs in the form of little forests / park complexes within city that have dense tree and grass foliage. Simple solution for Mumbai should have been to not touch Aaray forest and DIVERT YOUR METRO ROUTE......it won't kill people if they took a rickshaw / ride of few kms to Metro route. Do you raze down multiplexes / housing complexes to build Metro routes? No. You skirt around them, right? So what stopped Mumbai decision makers to mot chop down 300 trees and simply go around them???

And they hv now on-boarded that awful and highly irritating lady Priyanka (ex-Cong), who became infamous parroting the imbecile Rahul Gandhi's disastrous narrative of chowkidar-chor. Such ppl are deffly not helping Aaditya becoming CM anytime soon. In Phadnavis, BJP has found a master politician, well in the Modi /Shah mould. Thanks again SG, One thing is clear. With such an awful judicial system and mixed up environment laws and green/yellow tribunals, those of us to travel overseas and envy the fabulous infrastructure in HK, SG, LHR, CM, shud simply curse their karma and accept that things will change very slowly on the infra front in India. Courts need to reflect if a flamingo nest, some coral reefs, few thousand non-productive su-babul trees are reason enough to stall massive infra development projects. We really did lots of bad karma in our earlier birth to suffer this kind of infrastructure. Alas..

It's plain propaganda that's why. The government has not taken back any land from the Catholic Church for metro construction. The plot of land which was granted to the Catholic church is on the WE highway next to other community burial sites for Hindus and Muslims.

@Roh Fer LOL, it's the first time I've been accused of that, believe it if you will I'm a good boy I don't make threats, especially veiled ones cause there is always a chance some enlightened person will not get it or worse read too much into it. why do you think I was making a threat when all I did was expressed disappointment. perhaps you'd feel better if I had said "aise logo ka kuch nahi ho sakta" but what did I say that was a threat? in what sense? I totally fail to understand that. Mumbaikars call it Mumbai and those who are stuck in some kind of a colonial hangover call it Bombay cause they think that makes it sound cool. Honestly calling it Mumbai is the right thing to do, that is if you at all care about being accurate. It has been 24 years since the city was renamed and that is a long time to get rid of a habit, also when you say nobody cares then why is someone commenting back😆 anyhow doesn't matter to me what you choose to call it cause it is your right to be wrong, just don't mind it when people tell you what is right. cheers. p.s. I'm really curious what part was threating, possibly if you point that out I might be able to show the ability to change.

I stay right across Aarey - kind of semi-active in these activism ! So confused over this - kind of pained over cutting of over 2000 trees over night - no news chanels gave such a detailed information - a kind of relieved knowing some trees are re-transplanted ! and the life is stil is not lost - Thank you Shekar ji - I could sleep in peace -
An excellent deep dive into the issue, thank you Shekharji!! Also, it's great that you painstakingly make the distinction between facts and your (informed) opinion.
Thanks to this information, initially I was strongly opposed to the government's move to cut trees in Aarey. But after watching this video, I came to know about many aspects. So now I feel bad because I criticized the Maharashtra government very much for cutting down trees. But after watching this video it is clear that cutting trees for the metro shed is a very necessary step to improve Mumbai's transport system.... And the government has already promised in high court that they will replant around 23 Thousand trees in Aarey dairy area and Sanjay Gandhi national park , so there is no need to oppose this project now... Thanks a lot for this video.
Mr. Gupta no one is against the development, the Aarey forest issue is not something recent. The Maha Govt knew it right from the day one this project was planned and then started. So your argument about the land acquisition cost and additional 2 years for the landfill at Kanjurmarg does not stand. In fact it is simply illogical and thoroughly inaccurate. That cost would be one day earning of the Mumbal local trains. All Mumbaikar would have donated happily one return ticket from their pockets if the call was made to cover the cost. This is going to be the beginning of new city near Goregaon-Malad - where almost no land left for new land development. In Mumbai under the holy nexus of politicians and builders, slum and apartment communities grow near every railway station. The death of Aarey forest (which is a Nehru legacy) and maybe soon the Sanjay Gandhi National park is imminent now.
Lol. Mumbai actress will come in benz which burns so much fuel and have AC on all the time. Its not hypocricy its just that they are dumb. These actibists will not leave the convenience of Mumbai for any environmental cause.
Good to see shekhar supporting the project. It might be because he understands the grievance of daily commuters and the genuine efforts of the government.
I agree that a well researched balanced view must always be sought. I would like to know who do activists get the authority to file and get stays in public projects? Do they have the legitimacy to speak on behalf of people as elected politicians do?
Fantastic sir..i am your dedicated female audience :) i absolutely agree with you.People don't realise how land starved mumbai is and how heavily dependent the working class is on public transport. In all cities of in India, public transport is at its poorest performance. The crushing population rise coupled with lack of infrastructure makes daily commute hell.

Ohh Dia Mirza will never use the Metro, but will come out and protest against the Mumbai Metro. She'll travel in car producing lot more carbon emissions than the same for public transport. So you're right to say reckless and I will add panache to it.
Shekhar Gupta rocks -- even when I don't agree with him. He is right about "the Greens" needing to be smart or they become irrelevant. But he is wrong for implying India should not curb its carbon footprint because China's is much larger or because the Scandinavians are hypocritical in their environmental stand. We're all individually and collectively responsible for trying our best to avoid the environmental catastrophe that is just around the corner.
mumbai can easily have home office infrastructure and not a too centralized business district model which is becoming obsolete in this digital age......also they could look at building pedestrian friendly infrastructure including walkalators in densely populated districts drawing inspiration from progressive european cities and even hong kong including accomodating street vendors in more organized developed infrastructure....eventually the city has to solve its slum problem by replacing it with alternatives
