Remember, in this situation it is the Government of India who has to take the step. Muivah's opinions weren't taken seriously when Nagaland state was formed. He needed a strong "naga" force. So he converted all these tribes into "naga" either by force or propagandas. Recruited mostly Tangkhuls in NSCN-IM. It's basically a cry for attention. And to disturb the peace.

@Moon Raker see, it gets very tricky here, when say that someone is a "naga", because their identity is very new and there are no clear identifying criteria for a "naga identity", except for the fact that the term "naga" was referred to those different tribes in the naga hills in Assam province before Nagaland got statehood. Manipur Kingdom was ruled by Ningthouja Dynasty, one of the longest lasting dynasties in the world. And it's geographical territory had been established centuries before a "naga identity" was even born. Also the so called "nagas in Manipur" have always been a part of the Manipur Kingdom's ceremonies long before this vague identity was born. They have their own names(not naga) called Tangkhul, Maram, Mao etc. So when you say that these tribes(Tangkhul, mao, maram etc.) are nagas, it gives an impression that these tribes have been a part of the nagas in Nagaland (Ao, Sema, Angami etc.) all this time(which was Muivah's intention). Even more than a part of Manipur, giving an idea of separatism among the people. It creates a disturbance in the peace coexistence of these communities in Manipur, as well as in Nagaland.

@Moon Raker yes, the tribes from Manipur also had their own village chiefs, but it is also true that they had roles in Manipur Kingdom's ceremonies. Yes, every community enjoyed certain level of autonomy, but all were loyal to the Manipuri Nationalism, and took part in the Kingdom's ceremonies. An example is the "Mera Houchongba" festival, which has been celebrated since centuries ago, where every village chiefs from the hills of Manipur come to the valley to celebrate togetherness, exchange gifts and perform culture shows etc. Then there was no "naga" in Manipur. These tribes had nothing to do with the tribes of Nagaland or the naga nationalism. Unlike the history of Nagaland, the history of Manipur Kingdom has documented history from as early as 33-154 CE. To say the least, even Kuki tribe was once considered as a Naga tribe during the "naga nationalism", you can clearly see the level of identity crisis with this "naga identity". It is understandable when you say the tribes in Nagaland are nagas, but a community that has been a part of Manipur since time immemorial shouldn't be identified as something else, it not only affects the peaceful coexistence, but also taking advantage of the simple mindset of tribal people, making a fool out of them. It becomes an obstacle to the over-all development of the area and the only ones that suffer are the common people of that area, while NSCN-IM leader are filthy rich , with business around different places. Also, please shed some light on the history that you read during your highschool and of those articles. I would like to know how the Tangkhuls/maram/mao of Manipur are more a part of the tribals in Nagaland, than that of Manipur.

As a northeasterner I feel qualified to answer your question. The answer is fear and diplomacy. Assam was part of the Raj so it naturally conceded to India. As for smaller kingdoms they neither had the army nor the finances necessary to operate a state. These kingdoms created fortune mainly via trade with the British and they were pretty dependent too. Good analysis bro. But from experience, I don't think the tribal politics is ever gonna stop from ruining a good bunch of opportunities. Each tribe wants to prove themselves superior to the other and a never ending race of power grab. This is not particular of Nagaland and applies to whole of NE. Also the GOI is equally responsible for underdevelopment of the region. We could have been a major traffic route to reach the whole of SEA and even China and look at what the situation is now. Even tourism is not well advertised into the mainland. The worst part is connectivity and the rant goes on.....
