In today's video, we are going to talk about a cat breed that sparked a lot of controversy in its debut. The introduction of this breed was scorned back in 1991, by many who thought that the breed was suffering, mainly due to its notably short and stubby legs.
The Munchkin Cat Breed.
Munchkin Cats are a form of domesticated cats with short stumpy legs. accompanied by an elongated spine.
Short-legged cats aren't a new breed, they can be documented as early as the 1930s, and cats with considerably shorter legs were written about in England as well. It also became apparent that these cats supposedly disappeared during World War II, where many dogs and cats took a devastating blow in numbers.
Amazingly, the munchkin breed came about by accident in the 1980s, when Louisiana school teacher, Sandra Hochenedel found two short-legged, pregnant cats hiding under her car. She kept one of the cats and named her Blackberry. Half of Blackberry's kittens were born with short legs. It has been determined that the official "munchkin" breed, named after characters from the Wizard of Oz, can credit its lineage to Blackberry.
While they had been around for decades, munchkins were only accepted as a breed by The International Cat Association in 2003. They are not yet accepted by the Cat Fanciers' Association. Like hairless sphynx cats, which also have an unusual look, people either love them or hate them, at first glance, but the appeal has been gaining over time.
Munchkins owe their short legs to a naturally occurring gene, not human selective breeding. The gene responsible for the breed's short legs has been linked to the same gene, which gives dachshunds and Welsh corgis their diminutive stature. However, since the spine of a cat is physically different from that of a dog, munchkins do not suffer the spinal problems that are sometimes associated with those canine breeds.
The breed's most distinguishable feature are its legs, which can be categorized by three different types: rug hugger, super-short, and standard. Munchkin cats born with short legs, have a common dominant gene, specifically called the heterozygous gene. Cat's missing this gene will not be born with short legs.
Those born with short legs, which may be somewhat bowed in nature, have a slight lift from their shoulders to their haunches, because their legs are slightly longer in the back than the front.
A wide variety of coat colors and patterns appear in the munchkin cat breed, including calico, pointed, tortoiseshell, tuxedo, tabby, and bicolor. There is also a long-haired munchkin cat; the silky hair requires routine grooming to maintain ideal and healthy conditions. The short-haired munchkin cat has a medium-plush coat that is soft to the touch.
Munchkin cats are considered to be medium-sized, weighing on average between 6 and 9 pounds.
Munchkin cats are known to be rather healthy; so far, there aren't any congenital or genetic conditions specific to the breed that have been reported. Choosing a reputable breeder from which to purchase your pet will help minimize the risks.
Early speculation that the breed would suffer from spinal issues, due to their short legs has thus far been diffused by tests conducted in 1995 on some of the oldest-living munchkin cats, who showed no signs of joint and bone problems.
Some munchkin kittens are born with their back paws curling backwards; this is not considered an abnormality, as the paws straighten out and grow to be perfectly normal.
As with any pet, be sure to regularly consult a veterinarian for routine care and medical advice for your four-legged friend.

Corgis were bred slowly over many generations, so the current population isn't inbred and their proportions/weight distribution are ok for carrying their bodies. They're not immune to health problems obviously but generally they're okay. Munchkin cats are a designer breed that has been rushed into existence. They've been inbred specifically to be deformed. As someone with two "normal" cats I don't trust the articles claiming they're a "perfectly healthy breed" apart from the _small problem_ of their kittens being vulnerable to lordosis, a condition that causes their spines to sink.
@YourMajesty143
@YourMajesty143 Год назад
Please stop spreading misinformation. It's not a "defect" if it has no impediment to the health of the cat. Smaller legs do not have the same issues in cats as they do in dogs. That's bc cats have a flexible spine, so compression of their legs isn't a problem in the same way as it is in other animals. The munchkin gene is a mutation, but not a deformity - just like blue eyes are a mutation in humans. The munchkin gene is naturally-occurring and can develop without breeding. In fact, cats in the wild have evolved to be tiny. For instance, the rusty-spotted cat could fit in the palm of our hands. Also, the black-footed cat, the guiña, the flat-headed cat, etc. are just some other examples of tiny cats under 5 lbs. They're excellent hunters and have the same body-ratios as munchkins. What they lose in jumping ability, they make up for in speeding agility. Munchkins are quick with their feet and just as capable of maneuvering their small bodies no differently than other tiny-legged pets, like hamsters or hedgehogs. There is zero evidence of health issues in this breed due to this mutation. People see the word "breeding" and "munchkin" and immediately project the controversy that exists around tiny dogs unto tiny cats. Veterinarians will tell you munchkins are perfectly healthy, while keyboard warriors (with no medical training) will do otherwise. As a 10 year vegan, I can assure you that munchkins are perfectly suitable as pets, however I'd advise adopting them from a shelter or animal rehoming center. Adopt, don't shop.

So there is a difference between the Manx cat, polydactyls, dwarf cats and Munchkins, with all but the munchkins suffering from genetic abnormalities? I didn’t know that. I worry about disabilities being carried on via selective breeding so I am glad this breed is not - unless some accidentally negative features pop up and are not suppressed. But overall I am happy for this breed. Cats like the Manx can have their spinal condition - that makes the short tails- occur higher up in the spine, causing serious problems. Polydactyly varies in severity and mostly doesn’t hurt the cat if it is a domestic pet where they can have special care taken of their nails (I happen to love polydactyl cats)! I love all cats no matter what shape, amount of fur, length of tail or number of toes, for that matter. I just wanted to explain my thoughts and express my relief and happiness for the Munchkin breed.
@janetmiller9215
@janetmiller9215 2 года назад
I agree with your relief about the Munchkins. I've enjoyed seeing them in videos but searched to see about them because of concern. I had a polydactyl male whose front paws looked just like little hands with thumbs! He even used them to grasp strings and narrow objects between the "thumb" and paw. He was sensitive so I knew he must have been teased (came to me as an adult stray); but he learned that I loved those paws as much as I loved all of him.

Unlike some cat breeds, the genetic variation that causes the shorter legs does not seem to be causing health issues. Unlike flat- faced Persians that have issues with their sinuses, breathing, and excessive tearing. A percentage of the kittens born are so deformed, that they are euthanized at birth. Not good. I also had a purebred sweet dog, to breed her she had to have x-rays to make sure that there was no hip dysplasia, heart problems ( done with contrast under general) and a canine vision specialist would have to examine her for vision problems. Munchkins have short legs. They seem free from joint and spine problems. They live a normal lifestyle that most other cats do. (So I put a bed and couch ramps in to make it easier to join me for cuddle-and-purr-time, and invested in a self cleaning litter box (again with a ramp) to make our life together easier and more enjoyable for all). So, let there be Munchkins!!!!!

@@ruben7937 I think, you might have a major misconception on what human help means. This cats have a genetic defect, which leads to short legs. This defect can be active or passive, therefore likely existing for as long cats are walking on earth. A cat with this gene defect inherits the gene to their offsprings. However not every offspring becomes a short legged cat. Which means the gene defect is carried over to the next generation. The problem is, when humans start to isolate this gene and breed cats effected by it. In order to support the gene defect, which obviously leads to enourmous health issues.

People shouldn’t buy or breed munchkins! It’s cruel! They are cats! They should be able to do things other cats can do! Edit: I didn’t word this comment correctly, so I’ve fixed it, I’m NOT saying I hate people who own them, I’m saying I hate people who breed them for money and people who buy them from those breeders ONLY because they’re cute, it just seems horrible to me

@@secgoil622 A cat is not a cuddly toy, its an animal with all the instincts, desires and raison d'etre like every other species. In fact its even more pressing for a cat because a cat does not have the same concept of longevity being something to aspire to. When you shut a cat inside and treat it like a comfort blanket you deprive it of its very essence as an animal. My cat disappears into the wild whenever he likes for as long as he likes. He's not particularly friendly most of the time though there is a strong bond between us. If he gets killed on one of his adventures, I will be devastated, but I won't regret giving him the life of a cat for a second rather than depriving him of his freedom to go on life's journey as he pleases. An earlier death would be far preferable to depriving him of everything he was born to be for the sake my own self indulgence. Barring anything untoward he's likely to live longer anyway. He's extremely fit, muscular, highly active, with razor sharp instincts and reflexes, can be highly aggressive, and is more than a match for most of the other animals he comes across. He also hunts a great deal of his food so hasn't been fed on a diet of industrial mush. The outside world is a world he has mastered like any cat should. That is a spectacular animal to have the privilege of sharing a life with on the basis of mutual respect. Far more interesting and rewarding than a furry comforter.

@@osric1730 - I used to believe this and lost 3 outdoors cats to an early death. My current cat is an indoor cat who is leash-trained to walk outside and who has play dates to act out her instincts. She's a docile breed, she does not hiss or fight. To let her outside would be pet homicide. Also, we shouldn't be allowing cats to roam, especially if they're not neutered/spayed, since cat overpopulation is a big problem. It's also an issue bc feral cats are notorious for hurting local ecosystems like birdlife. And your cat is no match for feral dogs, foxes, wolves, coyotes, weasels, raccoons, snakes, hawks, wolverines, bobcats, cougars, etc. Cats can even be hunted by a family of eagles, large owls, otters, and so on. Humans used to live outdoors to scavenge and hunt, so by your logic you'd let your toddler roam in the streets & highways and feel that an early death can be justified, since your kid followed their "natural purpose". This is such a faulty argument. Cats literally domesticated themselves TWICE. They chose to forgo dangerous environments and hunting in exchange for shelter and free food. Humans only accommodated their close proximity to us bc these wild cats helped stave off pests and disease. Even nowadays, stray cats invite themselves into people's homes. There are millions of people with stories about backyard cats that wandered into their lives as pets. Cats have been doing this for millenia, you can't pretend to know what's best for them, when the obvious answer is domesticated animals should always be given sanctuary. This includes farm animals like cows, pigs, and chickens who also have been domesticated and should be sent to conservation, if they happen to be rescued. I hope your cat survives, but my personal experience tells me you won't live to see him reach the age of 5. I love my fur babies too much to just let harm come their way. No cat should HAVE to fight to survive if they've got shelter to keep them safe, it makes no damn sense to have them in the first place if you're not willing to protect them.

"the heterozygous gene" lol you need to go back to genetics 101. Heterozygous means to carry two different alleles at a given locus, it is not the name of a gene.
