My first vehicle had an M-22 close ratio in it. Old chevy Scottsdale 3/4 with a built up 355. Everything broke but the trans. When the apocalypse hits only thing will be left are cockroaches ,9th generation Toyota Corollas (03-08)and M22 Rock crushers.
I wish all of the f*cking experts in the comments would post YOUR videos of YOU in YOUR race car so we could tell YOU how to drive. I think Dean knows his car and is driving accordingly.
The close second to third shift M-22 was one of the things I loved about my 327 cubic inch w/ a single 4 barrel 650 dual feed double pumper Holley carb'ed 65 El Camino n cruising E Street San Bernardino Ca on Friday n Saturday nights. The Sig Erson cam was labeled 'mostly strip n little street' :) We never got shut down n raced any cubic inch or carb combo that was game to try us. Miles Cobbett, Author of the HW boxing book Champion
excellent. motor in this video has a 650 carb. the camshaft is a solid rollor that will rev to the moon. very very wide powerband. the cam is actually defined for big inch pro-street, or turbo/Blower.
I run a tremec tko600 pro built by Liberty gear behind a 421 Chevy small block. Not a cheap trans but a really sweet shifting trans. The overdrive knocks the 3.90 gears down pretty good for highway travel too.
I have two Muncie 4 speeds , sitting on a shelf as I can't use them because they can't handle the hp or torque my engine produces , even built the can't handle much over 600 hp and end up failing , the only oem 4 speed that can handle the power is a Ford top loader , two things Ford did better then chevy was the 4 speed top loader and the 9 inch rear-end , and im a chevy fan but facts don't lie!!!!!!
the top loader will not shift as well as a muncie, from the factory. if modifed yes and the top loader is stronger. and the ford 9 has more hp loss because of the placement of the pinion in the case, and for general drag racing use with a conventional ford 9, the ford 9 is more prone to front bearing faliure. if going all out the for 9 is tougher. but thats talking huge hp numbers. i have some friends up her that run 1000 hp on 12 bolts and no problems at all. and in these acpplications its more practical. cant chnage a chevy guys mind, or a ford guy haha.. im not aloud to have anything ford
That 2:20-1 first gear in the M22 close ratio will really challenge the launch without a low rear axle ratio like a 4:56 or lower. I would forget all the helpful tips on power shifting. The gears in this transmission are expensive.
The car as is in this video had 4.56 its completely not okay for racing standards. It needs 5.38 in the diff to be okay. I had a 2.64 first gear on 4.56 and it was better to get out. But i didnt want to sacrifice the sound of close ratios. From a roll its quite a condender
@@deantruax7202 There you go, I agree but that 5.38 ain't much fun on the street. I ran a close ratio with a 4.56 for a while, it didn't get out of the hole very good but it would break a motor mount. I like your car. El Camino?
@@Dan-ez6dr the 2.64 super t10 gear box was fun on the street, the close ratio muncie is also just as fun, but it gets younim trouble. It pulls over 60 mph im 1st when i sling it. Before you know, 4 gear comes amd your really breaking speed limits haha
@@deantruax7202 2.66 1ston my T56 with 411 and 26 in tire its almost not enough gear....6th is still useless way too tall Keep that muncie! If you gotta try a GV overdrive the new tremecs will never shift/take the abuse your muncie will. Im switching back
All the ones commenting negatives on this video are just armchair racers that wished their Prius could even run an eighth of what this 72 deuce just did.
Keep practicing those shifts. Me or anyone who drove my SS that really shifted well made it sound like a full on, manual valve body automatic going down track. The M22 with the shifter and linkage set up right could be shifted quicker than any other 4spd.
Chrysler (new Process) A 833 Is tougher, IMHO. 50% bigger copy of a T-10. I've rebuilt a few and driven them. FYI, the Overdrive aluminum case is the same input bearing dimensionally as the hemi case. Saves 23 lbs as I recall. I had a Hemi 4 speed that was worked over with no synchros for speed shifting, but it was beat. I guess that was the high tech before Lenco's and such. There's no broken cast iron cases. But I love them all.
The only thing I would suggest, is bucket seats. Even if they are cheap race seats, they are lighter than that damn bench seat. I'm wanting to say that this is a Nova, but I can't say with 100% certainty. If so, what year? Hell, even if it's not a Nova, what type of car/year is it?
@@deantruax7202 I've had big cube Pontiacs my whole life, with Muncies and 3.55s. Even had a Mr. Gasket Vertical Gate shifter in a 65 tri-power Goat in the 70s on the street for over 10 yrs, (Daily driver), and never broke a tranny, 10 or 12 bolt rear. With tons of full throttle power shifts. Trick is, no slicks. Use-ta drive the car 2 hrs to the drags, (Epping NH, and Prescot, Ark.), and always drove home. No trailer. Maybe not the best outta the hole, but lots of fun anyway. I'll check out your other videos, and wait patiently for your up-dated version. :)
@@joequillun7790 with ta`s i have full confidence. but with the slicks i know the wheels will literally fly out from under the car. i stopped using the tas because when i hit 2nd gear the motor pretty much just stays on the redline. ive really played with pinion angles and caltracs to dial it in, but it s abit tough to eliminate the spin. car has gone 11.88 with slicks with a conservative launch, 12.00 with street tire burning the clutch. i usually run it around 12.0 in bracket with slicks driving it normally. this car gets only drag raced and only driven to the track. its not aloud on a trailer. its a true street car. i actually won the nastagia points series championship in bracket with this car this year up here in canada, and i was the only guy showing up on my own power and not on a trailer.
@@deantruax7202 I give you credit for running a stick shift, in bracket racing. It takes talent to win with a clutch. It appears your car is an early Nova, (66-67?). I know the wheel wells were tight in them cars, and you're limited to tire size, and good traction. When the tubbed cars (pro street) became popular in the late 70s, it became much more beneficial for your car, but I'm guessing you're not tubbed. But low 12s with a 327 in a steel car like yours is very respectable. Now, go out and get yourself a Moser 12 bolt, and a G-force 4 speed, and give us a treat to some full powershifts. :)
@@joequillun7790 this car is a 72 nova, full weight. 3300 roughly with me in it. I run a 26x8 slick. pretty much the smallest tire possible with a stock posi. this car did 11.50s with a pretty basic automatic th350 with a 3500 converter. right now the car is trapping sometimes at 118 mph in reasonable air, but typically 116.
@@deantruax7202 4.11s and could do them with 3.73s. Burnout box is watered down, rev it to 2-3k dump the clutch and light em up . Takes less time than it would in 1st less rpm too
Really nice shifting but u should change were the linkages go make for a shorter shift. I have that same transmission in my 62 impala I my shift stroke is half of what yours is. Good job tho
this pass was with street tires. if i open it up it just revs to 8200 and sits there. i only hit the 4 barrel 120 feet out onto the track with street tires.
@@deantruax7202 according to the calculator I used, it is 420 flywheel hp in a 3300 lb car should trap at 119 and run 12.03. That is perfect world. robrobinette.com/et.htm I almost agree with those numbers but, the trap seems a little high and yours seems low for the time
@@thegreenerthemeaner car ran 11.60 with an automatic. Remember, when this car comes off the line, it's at very low rpm so the hp at that specific time is very low. It needs to make more for its loss atbthe begining. Calculators are going to give you average hp. This car makes 180hp off the line for quite along time before it comes into its real hp zone
@@deantruax7202 I got a st10 behind a 383 hopin I have better luck with it lol just finishing up the car now I did alot of research and found alot of people complaining about the oil making it not shift like you said but I got some royal purple max gear suppose to be good for the brass syncros hope it lasts a little while its gonna be gettin abused may need a gforce 4 speed sooner then I thought
@@deantruax7202 only paid 250 dollars for the trans and the Hurst competition plus so itll make not to painful if I need to change it I see people asking big money for then now
@@atothez1394 i actually used the royal purple gear max in it, it worked the best out of all the oils. the only oil that was better was the redline MT40. But the mt40 is really thin and not really designed for the insaine Gear lash that these old 4 speeds have. if yourre a good driver, a muncie or a well set up st10 will shift quick, muncie shifts better for sure. if ur not slamming the clutch with slicks the st10 and mucie are fine. i like the way the st10 shifter worrks better that the muncie behind the side cover. the st10 is abit more direct, but meh, even if it is set up to shift, the st10 will burn the syncros faster. mild 383s dont rev up that high so a muncie will shift really good! u dont need a dog box. too bad ur not up here canada to come for a ride haha... my munie shifts quite well past 7000 rpm. 7500 still works great. i dont ram the shit outta it.
im not shifting it anywhere as close to as fast as i can shift this trans. Im just trying to repsect the caveman old fasioned syncros. they shift faster but dont last that long.
lol, cocky & he has no idea how to flat shift.... Watch video of some of the legends like Ronnie Sox, Bill Grumpy Jenkins, Dyno Don & Hubert Platt...then come back in a few years!!
I can powershift better than anyone. But this is a stock transmission. Il pull threw the syncro amd scrap them. A convensional ring will only shift soo fast.
i shift it faster, but the syncro should only doo soo much. the teeth eat up quick when i shift it really fast. drop the trans oil after a day of drag racing hard and ul see whats in the oil. stock syncro...
It can shift pretty quick, faster than this video, but the best is when u video yourself and realize that what you think is quick is actually very slow.
I've taken guys for rides and they think I'm powershifting if they don't look when I really drive it... Then I check the video and it seems super slow... It's deceiving
