Paul Cangialosi and Sale Arena from 5Speeds.com install a new Muncie M22-Z transmission in Sal's 1962 Corvette. These transmissions are designed by Autogear and are assembled and "Blueprinted" at the 5speeds.com shop. This is part 3 and shows Sal driving the Corvette with the M22Z and you can clearly hear how it sounds.. Part 1 shows removal and Part 2, installation. Music by The Wrong.

Back in the 1960s, I had a '32 Ford 5-window with a 327 small block and a Muncie M-22 "Rock Crusher." I loved the sound of the straight-cut gears.

I have a 69 firebird with a m22 and i love the sound the transmission makes. I used to have a 71 ss nova that had a m22 and i loved it.

That sound is addicting. I tried buying a early 70's Trans Am with an M-22 when I was a young Marine private. Never drove a stick til that drive! Sales man taught me! But I was a Private making 80's Private salary ;-(

Nothing is better than riding in a last year C1 corvette with a M22 four speed. My 57 bel air had a 396 V8 with the M22, sold it in 2008.

Oh crap I'm that guy! LOLOLOLOLOL. Not meant to be complaining. Just all my gearhead guys feel, we can hear music anytime. So we really enjoy just hearing the vehicle. I guess we can never please everyone.

Thee car runs a fairly stock 327 - 365HP engine. The car does have flow masters on it.

What's with editing music over the sound of the car? True Gearhead's don't need a stereo, solid lifters, trans gear whine is the music. Very nice Vette.

Out of 39,000 views, you were the first to complain. Wind noise plays an important part. Didn't have remote audio in the engine bay. Could be something for future videos.

Is that the 20 lb spring in the cover that makes the shifts that stiff looking? Not picking at the rebuild just trying to figure out why mine was smoother to shift. I could speed shift mine simply by putting light pressure on the shifter in the direction I wanted it to go then find the sweet spot in the clutch travel and hit it so fast it could out shift the automatics of the day. That gear whine takes me back to the day. Love it.

If I understand correctly, the car was originally built with a Borg Warner T10, why was it changed to a Super T10 and then to the Muncie M22-Z?
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo Год назад
Early T10 4 speeds were weak and problematic. The St10 was a great upgrade but the z ratio Muncie offered superior strength and better gearing with the 3.08 rear

Thanks for your Video on the Doug Nash 5 Speed now I know why all my street racing buddies called me shitbox.. That 3.27 first gear sure got me a lot better hole shot however.. My GF Won the use of a 1981 L-82 Vette.. It shifted really fast with a short throw.. now I wonder what trans that car uses.. Then I learned how the Doug Nash 4 + 3 was a good idea but not affordable or practical today .. I rebuilt the Fuller RTO 6610 in 1986 still works fine after 20,000 hours and 187,000 miles much of them off road shifting in soft fields with no clutch ..

Yo Paul, thanks for setting me up with your blueprinted Hurst shifter package. 1 quick question, if I ever get around to rebuilding my super t-10, am I able, or is it possible to change the gear sets to straight cut gears or something to give me that whine of a Muncie? Sounds so good and I know twisted gears run hotter and aren't as strong. What are my options?
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 3 года назад
The St10 gears are just as strong as M22 gears with a good case and midplate. The problem is finding both an iron case and iron midplate. There are straight cut gears for road race applications offered by Roltek Transmission

Great video, and even greater Corvette. In your opinion Paul, would the Z ratio be too wide with a 3.36 rear axle?
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 10 лет назад
Not really, If you are looking for a good driver its an awesome ratio set. For performance racing the M22W set is a better choice.

@ted850760 Oh, okay. That's so the car won't shift in reverse by mistake. In a Volkswagen, you have to push the shift knob down to put in reverse.

Does this trans have your aftermarket m22 gears in it or are they original gears?
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 8 лет назад
+Swilling The M22Z ratio was only made by Autogear. GM never made that ratio. Original M22 gears have not been made since 1981 and they had a 2.20 1st gear. This one has a 2.98 first gear. Thanks for watching!
@Swilling
@Swilling 8 лет назад
+GearBoxVideo Ah very cool, i bought a complete unassembled M22 from you about 2 years ago, and while the trans is done, still building the car. I had heard that the newer m22 gears didn't have the same whine, but that certainly still has the right sound to me.
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 8 лет назад
+Swilling People cannot grasp that almost 50 years later gears can be machined more accurately. Gears are now CNC hobbed, shaped and ground. This is no longer a manual operation. Thus, gear tooth distortion due to heat treat is virtually eliminated. So, even though the new M22 gears can be direct replacements, the tooth profiles are more accurate and consistent. Better case centering accuracy is also achieved. So unfortunately by nature of improvements they will run with less noise than gears and cases manufactured in the 1960's.
@Swilling
@Swilling 8 лет назад
Awesome explanation, Makes complete sense, thanks so much, you guys have great customer service and I can't wait to buy another complete unassembled trans for my next project.

Be still my heart...argh now I'm going to have to look for some new old GM stock....We can't let CNC machines erase that sound...That's just not right...

What's that handle on the shift lever?
@TractorWrangler01
@TractorWrangler01 6 лет назад
You really don't need that reverse lock out. I never had one with my super shifter. Reverse is easy to feel in a M22 and it's to the left of 1st so once you launch you never really go back to hunt for 1st anyway. 10 years and I never once hit reverse by mistake. If you don't have a lock out don't even worry about it.
