This is a brief review of a Munetoshi Performance Cutting Katana
JH-6611BRN. Special thanks to Sword Friend Brian!
Quick note - Sword Friend Brian did receive a replacement from Munetoshi that was free of issues. I noted that was what was supposed to happen and I am happy to confirm that it did. The replacement seems to have a slightly large ledge on the kashira but the ito is a bit tighter, the hamon pops a bit more, there are no smudges in the lacquer, and there are no cracks in the blade. (at least that is what Sword Friend Brian noticed) Yeah! Happy Endings.

That crack was like a heart stains on its blade other than that it looks like a flawless cutter

This is a great mat cutter.. Couldn't be more happy with mine!! Having said that I would not recommend it for someone cutting mats for the first time, or for someone who wants to cut other things... I think it truly is ment just for mats, and it does what its intended for very very well!!!

Excellent review. That's why I like munetoshi, they are not the best looking blades but they feel like what you imagine a katana should, and they emphasize functionality over being fancy.
@Matthew_Jensen

I'm not sure. They seem to have their own style and I like that. I am not sure if it costs any more or less money to do that. I have also liked many of the blades from munetoshi.

Matthew Jensen Yeah I know now there are different variations of the Japanese blades suited for different purposes, but back when I first got into martial arts I thought all Katana were supposed to be light fast cutting swords. All my swords from them feel light and well balanced. Heavy isn't a bad thing though sometimes I prefer heavier blades

Thanks Matt. As usual an excellent critique and review. I do find it somewhat hard to believe that a pumpkin is considered a non- acceptable medium to test a katana made specifically for cutting. I guess fresh roadkill is definitely out of the question. Sorry, but for me, this model is a no go. A crack in the blade could forfeit your freedom for years to come. That little predicament would require a lot more than great customer service.

I really do want the munetoshi 1075 samgakdo ! such a great a katana to add to my collection and I cant wait to get up the money to actually order it . I need a hira zukuri geometry blade because theres no better cutter than the hira zukuri . and I also like the fact that the blade is wider than the standard blades . its kinda like the hanwei practical elite compared to the regular hanwei practical katana .

So the Katana cracked under intended use?! Awesome on the customer and timely customer service. Id like to cut with this in the future but water bottles voiding warranty perplexes me.🙉🙊🙈
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 5 лет назад
I think it cracked before it came to me and did not crack more. Looking at photos I took prior to using the sword it had a small crack that went unnoticed. I did not pick it up until after testing but it was there at the start. From my understanding Munetoshi swapped the blade out with the customer. They seemed like a fair group to deal with.

I believe that "shape" you call "hourglass" is referred to as "waisted" . In this case, some part of the center is purposely made narrower than the ends. And not "wasted" as how you would feel the morning after a horrendous party the night before. *sorry couldn't pass that one up* =) Oh, yes, I did like the review. I was looking for comments on T10 steel.
@pepefroglive
@pepefroglive 4 года назад
I read that 1095 carbon steel and T10 are more brittle than 1060 or lower carbon steel. Which could explain the chance of a crack.

Hey Matt ... I just bought one of these guys from SwordnArmoury. According to both you and John Walter ... this model is STRICTLY for tameshagiri (sp?). My plan is to put it through a little more paces then that ... I have my usual slightly heavier water bottle and heavy cardboard. Considering it made of T10 I would expect to stand up pretty well ... although perhaps not under REPEATED abuse like that. T10 tend to kinda be the best of both worlds between 1095 and 5160 ... all the spring and endurance and all the blade retention. What do you think I should expect from it? It did make one of your lists. Thoughts?
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 4 года назад
I would not advise it. Don't get me wrong, I expected the same thing going into it but they said that that blade is really for tatami cutting. The tops of bottles can be more dense than tatami and the edge is thin enough to chip or roll. As a tatami cutter, it is great, as anything else.. not so much. If you get one that survives more punishment, then I don't think my recommendation would change much. Sword n Armory noted that it is made for tatami cutting and had would not likely have taken it back had any damage happened while using the blade. That said, if you get yourself some tatami, it would be fun to hear your thoughts.

@@Matthew_Jensen Thank for the honest assessment. Ya talked me out of it. For me ... at this point in my experience with these weapons ... I think this design is a little too focused on an aspect I'm not prepared to get into just yet. I have looked at other Munetoshi products and picked another one of their models. I'm also going to check out Dragon King's Savior Katana ... a little off topic ... that's just where I am in the hobby right now. Thank you again.

Try giving the hilt a couple pops with a hammer fist. You know make a fist and hit it with the opposite side off where your thumb is. Like a hammer only the hammer is your fist. You know a couple off sharp hits , you dont have to like kill it just a couple sharp taps.

Bro, question, a sword that is 2lb 11oz would you say is on the heavier side? The one I want to buy is around that so I'd like an opinion from someone who has handled many swords.
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 5 лет назад
It would be on the Medium heavy side in my mind. 2lb 8oz would be in the middle At least from my experience with mostly modern swords.

Quality heat treated & tempered steel should always be > plastic water bottles. I get it's tough for a katana to be designed and produced that can chop wood on par with an ax or heavy cutting survival blade (thinking of Becker BK series), but a water bottle or pumpkin should crack or damage a quality blade, IMO.
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 3 года назад
Generally speaking I agree. But that is like saying any car should be able to go over a speed bump when looking at a purpose built drag racer. This sword (from what I understand) is advertised as a purpose built tatami cutter. I think they could call that out a little more directly but still the intended use is clearly tatami. Not my first choice for battle but if you are an experienced practitioner and want to cut exclusively tatami, then this is a good option. Not as heavy as the hanwei xl blades, or a number of the others out there. Also much less expensive than the munetoshi blades.

Hi Matthew Jacky at SwordNArmory is a friend of mine and I do trust his house brand also I am trying promote Munetoshi line. My advice if you plane to order from them tell them to check the item for flaws and if ok they will ship it out to you but keep in mind that it will be open just let you know that it has been examined for any defects.
