Wonderful old film with breezy, witty dialogue, and it keeps you guessing. Never mind that the police act completely against all logic by letting the amateurs take over, I thoroughly enjoyed it and it held my interest from start to finish. So the detective lets someone get away with murder because he feels sorry for them? That's a new one!
@Pavlovafowl
@Pavlovafowl 2 года назад
No, it's absolutely key to the idea of the P.I. as opposed to the 'official' detective force. They are individuals, loners with their own sense of justice and morality. Sherlock Holmes, Phil Marlowe, Poirot, Miss Marple, Lord Peter Wimsey, Father Brown, Sam Spade et al, all are at some point in the narrative faced with a decision of whether or not to show their hand or allow the police force to continue in their error. Their code allows them, in certain cases, to leave the actual criminal to make their own end rather than face a protracted trial and public 'execution' or in other cases to go free. In this case the victim is a blackmailer, which in the P.I.'s code was often seen as worse than a murderer, she had also sent one man to the asylum and was about to start on his brother. The private detective weighs the murderer and the victim in the scales of his own sense of justice, considers also the situation of those of the family and friends, innocents, who will be dragged into this if the murderer is revealed, warns the murderer that he knows the truth and then leaves the latter to his/her own judgement. If they don't do what he expects then his next step is to go to the official force with the evidence, as per revealed in the final scene of this film. For a classic example of the P.I.'s code see 'The Maltese Falcon' with Bogart's brilliant portrayal of Sam Spade and in particular his final explanation of why he has to send Brigid O'Shaughnessy to prison and possibly to the scaffold.
@graemesmith6721
@graemesmith6721 2 года назад
@@Pavlovafowl You neglect to mention that the blackmail victim was himself a murderer, so Muriel was also administering a kind of justice, especially since she clearly didn't need the money, having received $250,000 from her divorce settlement--over a million in today's money. And by trying to cover the murderer's tracks, Reuben is guilty of obstruction of justice and being an accessory to murder after the fact. If it hadn't been for the butler coming forward with the evidence Reuben tried to hide, Holt never would have figured out who Muriel's killer was. But Reuben's rich and well-connected, so I'm sure he won't do any time.
@Pavlovafowl
@Pavlovafowl 2 года назад
@@graemesmith6721 That's why the narrative is interesting, although it has been explored many times before. Rather than give a clear cut right vs wrong, early detective stories and later film noir, allowed for individual reasoning. This doesn't preclude the idea that the reader and often the other characters, including the narrator, if any, are bound to agree with the outcome. To me these stories are meant to make us question everything rather than feed us the answers.
