Casting a murder hornet in epoxy resin. Murder Hornets, aka Asian Giant Hornets are the largest of all hornets at 2 inches in length. Today I’m encasing this murder hornet in epoxy resin using casting techniques I haven’t tried previously. I used a pressure pot for resin casting for the first time, and tried using heat forming plastics in the cast. This is the first video in a two part series where I’m making a dagger with a murder hornet in the handle!

Murder hornets made into daggers sounds totally appropriate for 2020. Save the bees!

Another tip I've heard is to not let the resin fully cure between pours. Then there will still be monomers left on the surface that can make polymers with the new layer and make it so there's no visible line between them.

the easiest thing to do IMO would be, after the first layer, just use a tiny amount of UV resin just enough to stick the hornet down then, set it with a UV light & finish with the other half of the mold full of resin.

Vacuum chamber to degas then move to pressure pot to cure. Use UV resin to hold your specimen down (can also coat specimen in a spray lacquer before casting). Pour next layer of resin to cover. Vacuum chamber to degas and pressure pot to cure. Remove the outside by cutting, turning on lathe, or just sanding down. Wet sand with super fine grit. Apply polishing compound and polish till shiny.

I made a few things with resin and the way I found out how to keep the items from floating in the resin is Using Uv light resin jus as a tiny amount to the bugs feet and use a uv light, The uv resin cure in two minutes that will keep your bug from floating when you add the rest of the regular resin in the uv resin is used in resin charms

Make sure you're using teflon tape on all of your connections for your pressure pot. Swagelok also makes a great sealant/lubricant to use with the tape called Swak. This will help your pressure pot do its job.

I've been sitting on two murder hornets from last summer that I've been too nervous to cast, I guess I should just give it a go now that I've got my pressure pot mounted to the wall and a new air compressor. FYI the pressure pots with casters (California air tools is what I got and love) can easily be mounted to a wall sideways allowing you to slide longer pieces inside and use it more efficiently.

Love the casting. If i may add to your hornet statement. The bees that swarm the hornets and kill them do it by flapping their wings rapidly that increases the core temperature of the hornet. That is how the hornet dies.

Something else you can do if you don't want to Vacuum the mould with the bug in it is mix the Resin in the measuring cups then Vacuum the air out of the Resin, then carefully (so you don't reintroduce a lot of air into the Resin) pour the Resin into the mould while the mould is already in the Pressure Pot (limiting the amount of movement of the mould and reducing the amount of reintroduced air, also reduces the chances of spilling the Resin while putting large/awkward moulds into the Pot) and then putting everything under pressure. This also lets you quickly and very thoroughly mix the Resin with a paddle/paint mixer (which introduces a huge amount of air) and still get crystal clear castings.

Great video! I want to try some insect resin pours myself. I have heard that pulling a vacuum on the resin while it is wet will also pull all of the bubbles out. Have you ever tried that? I will do a few experiments using both methods to see which one works the best. Thanks.

You should soak the specimen in a UV resin or a quick set resin insects have large air pockets and will bubble in your pot you need to figure a way to make sure the resin is either surrounding the hornet as you put it in the larger quantity of resin or it is completely void of all are when you place it in the resin

Was that Bourbon Moths theme music? Haha You should try UV resin to hold the specimen down mate. I’ve recently started using it and it works great. Also, when you’re pouring multi layers, don’t let your first layer fully cure. Once it gets tacky pour your next layer. This will create a chemical bond and should eliminate those lines you can see on the edges. Looking forward to the next video!
@JonnyBuilds

About your problem with the specimen floating, I've seen other "makers" here on youtube solve that issue by putting a little bit of UV resin on the object, laying it down, and shining a UV torch at it to quick-cure the resin, "gluing" the object in place so it doesn't move when you pour the primary resin.

Wouldn't a small dot of super glue or some transparent glue work well? That way, you could easily position it exactly where you want. UV resin works as others have mentioned, but I imagine the tiniest dip of its feet into glue would be just as easy and quick.
