Murder in Vilcabamba, a tragic story related to the reality of living in Ecuador

In this video, I share the story of a family in Vilcabamba, Ecuador, who tragically lost a beloved member in a home invasion robbery. A mother of three brave teenage daughters valiantly defended another family member against one of the assailants but, sadly, lost her life in the process.
While this devastating incident may raise concerns, I want to emphasize that it is an isolated event and not reflective of Vilcabamba as a whole. Vilcabamba, known as the "Valley of Longevity," offers a serene and welcoming environment that has attracted retirees from all over the world for its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm community.
On the flip side of the coin though, because of recent events similar to this one over the past year, it has become apparent that Vilcabamba may not be the best choice for a retiree at this time.
My aim is to encourage future retirees to not let this tragic news dissuade them from coming to Ecuador for your dream retirement and if you want to live in the Vilcabamba region, stay close to town until we begin to experience more positive cultural changes that make it safer to live there.

Thank you, Don, for another informative video. The crime in Ecuador does not scare me anymore than the crime in my own home town. In fact, I'm in more fear here than I would be anywhere in Ecuador. I live in a small town in Northern Minnesota. I grew up here, moved away for several years, then I moved back home. I won't bore you with the details, but coming home again I fell into a job in our county's sheriff office as a jailer/dispatcher and I can tell you from experience how things have changed in my beautiful town over the last 15 years and it has not been for the better as it relates to crime. The drug trade is through the roof, young kids overdosing, burglaries and robberies on the rise every year, a home invasion resulted in the death of a young woman and another woman was killed by her own son. My beautiful town has become a crime-infested sh!t hole because of the drug trade. We used to leave our doors unlocked when I was young in case someone broke down and needed to use the phone and we might not be home. Now, two thirds of all the people I know here carry guns on them, mostly because the media spends most of their time scaring the crap out of everyone. Crime is on the rise all over the world. Active shooter drills in US schools? C'mon! I hope people don't think that Ecuador is unique in their rise of crime. If your dream is to move to Ecuador don't let go of that dream just because of events like this because I guarantee you that things are no different anywhere else.

@hoochiecoochie571
@hoochiecoochie571 Год назад
@@MartineReed We believe it's both borders, most likely our own residents acting as mules bringing it in either driving or flying, at least that's what the statistics show. And, yes, the Canadian border is probably worse for us in Minnesota and other Northern states regarding fentanyl. Thankfully, new body scanners are making it much more difficult to bring into the correctional facilities, which makes things much safer who work and live within the facilities. I'd like to see them used more at the airports, too, but apparently that's too invasive?

Perhaps if we abandoned the "war on drugs", and instead instill a strong sense of personal responsibility where the individual is entirely responsible for their own safety and success in life, things would improve. This government control and interference in our lives might just be THE problem. (edit) Maybe we should look at ourselves for the cause, and not our neighbors to the north or south.

@@lvovodessa, yes, guards can be bribed, but then they lose their jobs and income and the ability to support their family. Also, many secure buildings in Ecuador have video surveillance. This comment of yours sounds like something you just make up with no data behind it. I'm sure it CAN happen, and perhaps rarely it does, but thieves are mostly opportunists who look for the lowest common denominator - the place with the easiest access, the most to gain for the risk involved, and the fewest witnesses. The crime increase throughout Ecuador is truly sad. Such a beautiful country. I understand that much of the problem is due to the drug cartels moving in, and the criminal activity they bring with it. I hope the government can get a handle on it (with help from the citizens).

The cartels (mainly the Sinaloans) have been there’s for a long time, it’s just that leaders have been getting killed frequently therefore the chaos is stemming from unorganization which is creating a lack of control (and the power move of the CJNG to squeeze themselves in).

A truly horrible event.... but also not a defining factor of this area. I have been told by long time residents, that there tends to be waves of home break-ins by, apparently, outside crews that move through from time to time, (and also stated that this is only the second homicide in the 10 years they have been here) but overall, it is a very cohesive community and safe, especially if your property is secured by all the typical security things that homes have. They target areas that are percieved to have residents with more money, such as Malacatos and Vilcabamba. And while there are many foreigners, there is a lot of money from Lojanos with second homes, large family farm properties, etc. As far as I can tell, there is not a big problem with animosity between Ecuadorians and foreigners... again, overall. I can only guess that there are particular problems with particular people as with any place.... but I have found it to be the friendliest place I have been. There is no reason to balk at coming here! Come and see for yourself. ☮

Don, you are so down to earth.....in so many ways. It's refreshing. Could you discuss the complications of getting to Cuenca and Manta from North America? So many people describe that they have had to go through Miami and stay overnight or longer, get their luggage and take a new flight to Ecuador. The connecting flights from most places, especially Canada can extend with stopovers for 12 hours or more, with several stops, at least one in the US, then at least one or two more in Ecuador, changing planes, etc. The same for the other way. There has got to be a better way somehow!
@DonShader
@DonShader Год назад
There isn't. It is what it is until more airlines see some kind of value in coming here. I flew here from Phx through Mia, then GYE, then had to take a car 3 hours to Manta.
@BH-pl7vg
@BH-pl7vg Год назад
That’s just the way it is, I’ve flew in and out many many times and it’s nearly impossible to get any smooth itineraries. Something booking each destination yourself can help you make the cost cheaper and faster but not always (for example book Miami to Bogotá separate and then Bogotá to Manta separate). If you’re going to Manta you will need to likely stop into Quito first (occasionally Guayaquil) and then to Manta as the airport in Manta is not international. The bud ride from Guayaquil to Manta is like $7 and they leave about every 30 minutes if you’d rather not fly and they’re about 4 hours. If your Spanish isn’t passable it might not be a good idea but you should be okay. If you decide to take the bus, don’t fall asleep, keep an eye on your belongings.
@BH-pl7vg
@BH-pl7vg Год назад
Keep in mind Taxi cost too, Uber or InDrive should be cheaper but if you take a Taxi to bud station from the airport they’ll charge about $5-7 which is pretty unreasonable because it’s basically right next to it, should only be about $3. You’ll also need a taxi from the bus station in Manta to where your going. The average cab will charge about $4 from the bus station in Manta to the Playa Murciélago area.

@@BH-pl7vg Ii can just imagine what this involves in the situation where a person has to travel back and forth to the US or Canada especially for urgent reasons.
@RJMincey
@RJMincey Год назад
Nonstop flights are always more desirable. No question about that. I prefer them myself - who doesn't? Catching a connecting flight is inconvenient to be sure. The only exception would be if we actually wanted to have a layover in a place to visit for a while. (As an example, I deliberately chose a long layover in Amsterdam in a flight from Minneapolis to Johannesburg.) Having said that, the person who finds the prospects of changing planes foreboding may not make a good candidate for moving abroad. Moving to a new country is not for the faint of heart. A lot is involved. It can be managed of course, and thousands of people do it. But there are plenty of details to master and account for. And if one or two stopovers becomes a deal-breaker for you, and if but for that alone, one country would be your first choice, but you wind up choosing another, then I hope you realize that you have just placed a higher priority on the hours you spend in transit than on the days, weeks, months, and years you spend living in a place. Does that seem like a reasonable ranking to you?

You must have enough money to bribe yourself out of any situation in a third world country. And generally, it does not take a great deal of it. I lived in San Jose, Costa Rica for three years (work related) with a friend who had a small house. I paid $2000.00 for a Glock 17 with two magazines and a kydex holster. The pistol was kept in the house. I sold it back to the same person I bought it from for $1000.00 before leaving the country. So, essentially, I rented a firearm for three years for $1000.00. If I had gotten into a self-defense shooting I would have had to spend some more "bribe cash" to neutralize the issue.

this took place at a remote location closer to Malacatos than Vilcabamba. It is reported that it took place at the wrong location. the incident took place 20 miles from Vilcabamba. what about the murders in Manta where you live? you owe the people of Vilcabomba an apology.

My wife and I are looking at Huatulco Mexico, population 50K, no crime if any, CLEAN. Gorgeous bays/beaches. At one time we were looking at retiring from the U.S. and going to Vilcabamba, but no more. And Ecuador is just too far from the U.S.

Ecuador is a very safe & beautiful country. Like anywhere else , there are crimes. Mostly petty crimes. The USA is the most dangerous country in the world w/the highest rates of violent crimes

My understanding/guess/deduction is that the problem near vilcabamba is that there are too many “ugly American” gringos there. Ive heard many estimates from 20% - 50% of the current population are gringos. There are so many that every time i get in a taxi in loja they ask me if i live in vilcabamba and why not. While the shop owners like this. The rest of the population (mostly mestizo not indigenous) don’t like it because they can afford to live where their family has lived for centuries. They complain about gringos not learning Spanish, getting drunk everyday, and taking lots of drugs. Alot (not all)of the gringos are washed up hippies and look and act like it. Im not judging, im just saying it doesn’t go over well with the natives. So in the remote areas outside of the city, where many go to live in “paradise” are getting robbed, regularly. My deduction/Guess is this is not happening in the actual city. They caught one criminal group a month or two ago, which resulted in a reduction, but it is still happening. Its the farms without neighbors where this is happening. It appears to me, that the robbers justify the robberies because they are gringos. Thats just my thoughts I see that this story has hit several US newspapers. There was one story i read where they thought the robbery was mistaken identity, because they were looking for tia grande, the big aunt. (who was not there and didn’t live there). If true, it could be drug related. Personally, knowing what i know, im not moving to vilcabamba from Loja under any circumstances.

@@silentlurcker Thanks for bringing that out.. if i want to keep living among ugly loud pushy Americans, then I'd plan to stay right here in the USA for the rest of my life. But if i immigrate to Ecuador, the last town I'd want to move to is where there's a 50% colony of what i moved away from.

you know that the crime location is more to Loja then to Vilcabamba? But you should know, you well-informed Lojano. I would look for the killers more in Loja than in Vilcabamba!

@@lvovodessa, According to CEO World, Ecuador's health care system ranks 25th in the world. Colombia's ranks 35th. As for murder rate, Ecuador may now be higher than Colombia, but over the past half century of more, Ecuador has had a much lower homicide rate and I expect that it will revert to this lower average in a few more years. Also, this homicide rate in Ecuador is concentrated almost exclusively in the drug trafficking circles or in domestic violence (by someone known to the victim). So long as expats exercise good judgment and avoid dangerous areas, they will be fine. As for the cost of living index, according to Numbeo, Colombia's is indeed lower than that of Ecuador, but the local purchasing power index of Colombia is much lower as well. And as a ratio of purchasing power to cost of living, Ecuador is still better. I think Colombia is improving a lot and I have high hopes for this country. Ecuador has a number of challenges right now which I believe it will overcome.
