Some amazing editing. A son is going downstairs in his apartment building, then turns back around because he wants an alarm clock. Not an item one would have on their person at all times. He walks up the stairs, and his motion continues seamlessly into the next shot: it cuts to his mother's hands as she hands it to him. In the prior shot, he was walking towards the camera and moving his hand forward as well. He's doing both of those things in the next shot. Then the camera cuts again and we realize we've been instantly teleported back inside the apartment, to the location of the item.
It is through cuts like these that Muriel manages to rapidly go forward in time.
