Murray crayfish opening 2022

Catching big crayfishing is something that I look forward to every winter. With Murray crayfish, even the small ones are big. They are prehistoric and awesome.
A very large American crawfish, or Australian yabby is still much smaller than an undersize Murray crayfish. In some parts of Australia they are called freshwater lobster.
Just as some people like to practice catch and release fishing with many species of sportfish, I love practicing it with Murray crayfish.

Love watching these vids for giant crayfish. Native signal crayfish where I live ate just a bit bigger than common yabbies. . According to a government website you can catch marron in the Murray River. Is there a place where you can catch both?

Great video robbie ,I remember back when I was in primary school in the 70,s my teacher brought in a murray crayfish to show us how big and powerful their claws are by letting us stick our pencils in its claws and watching it snap them lick twigs and these pencils were the big thick ones you learnt to write with back in the day.I have never seen a cray as big as that since.

Hi Robbie. I think the restrictions need to be tightened further and the penalties exponentially increased. 2per day and max of 6 per year per person might still not be sustainable because many people take heaps in a season; a maggot I know tried bragging about taking his 4 weeks of annual leave with 3 mates last year and eating crays every night. That’s about 60 taken per person (240) legally (but I wouldn’t count on it) but NOT RESPONSIBLY. I despise people who think/say they’re doing the right thing while destroying what they claim to love and respect. There’s not even much flesh on one of these! Yes, I do catch crays every year (if I’m lucky and if I get time and if my bit of the river is accessible). I take two in total and cook them for a family of four as a delicacy not a whole meal. I also want to encourage all responsible fishers to report it when they see illegal fishing. I’m not saying go and confront everyone you think might be doing the wrong thing but do take note of their description and vehicle registrations and report it: if fisheries turn up and they’re following the rules then no harm-no foul but if allowed to get away with it they’ll destroy your fishery in one foul sweep. This is what happened two years ago in Wodonga creek, there were a lot of undersized crays about and a large group of ‘peoples from another nation’ taking absolutely everything. I don’t know if fisheries did anything but I do know there were no crays last year and it may take decades for the population to recover. End of rant.
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing 2 года назад
Thanks Glen. I agree with you 100% mate. People can stick legally take a lot of crayfish. I could take Holly, Skye and Lauretta with me and then use 20 nets and keep 8 crays. I love crayfishing too much to do anything to risk it. It would be hard to enforce a seasonal limit, but i reckon it can be done with a tagging system. Buy 6 tags, and if you get caught with a cray in your possession without a tag on it.... BANG! You're done. They use to use a similar system for kangaroo culling.
@glenbaker4024
@glenbaker4024 2 года назад
Thanks mate. I thought hard about posting my comment because I thought ‘I’m going to get hammered for this’. I didn’t think of a tag system, great idea. I actually considered naming names but decided that would be going too far but the people in question know who I was referring to though I doubt they’ll change their ways. Cool video bro. Cheers.

One claw is the pincher and one claw is the crusher. They grab with the faster claw first and then latch on with the stronger one. That is why one is thinner and longer and one is always much bigger. I compare it to how a person grabs with one hand and strikes with their stronger arm. I can't imagine how painful it is without a glove but I am surprised it didn't hurt much with just a glove on.

@@robbiefishing I have wondered if they pierce the skin. It seems obvious but I have not been able to find the answer. How bad is a full size destructor yabby pinch? I have been bitten by one with a claw just over 1cm wide and that was incredibly painful, much worse than I thought. I'm very curious as I've bred them for 17 years. Hi Mate many thanks for sharing I really enjoyed it :) I am watching from overseas Robbie, can I ask what species are these? Are they your native species? I know in the Uk for example they have a big problem with signal crayfish which are an invasive species introduced in the 70's I think in an attempt to harvest them for food. Some escaped and they are now some waters and rivers infested with them. They are reducing stocks of the native white crayfish. Anyway big thanks again Robbie I really enjoyed watching.

I just had a really quick look, and it says that mating takes place in May and is most likely triggered by falling water temperatures. The eggs grow, and remain under the females tail for around 140 days until late spring. Once they hatch, the baby's stay attached to the mother until they have shed their skin several times, by which time they are then mature enough to head off and fend for themselves. Fascinating!

Next time you fish in port Phillip bay or western port bay and catch snapper/ pinkies. Use the frames for bait. Works for Murray Crays and yabbies

@@robbiefishing your welcome mate, worth a try we had success years ago. And a weird bait to try is carp chunks, never would have thought you’d catch snapper on the old mud marlin but it works better than chicken. I think what made the rules get changed so much was back in early 2000's a heap of gum leaf and ground litter flowed into the Murray River and chocked of the air in the water and and the Crays came to the banks and pouched the event only lasted a little while but it got really had people where coming up from Melbourne and taking buckets of them..... after that the rules changed and you still don't get the really big one we used to enjoy...
