Musée d'Orsay is the best museum to visit in Paris and, if you only have time to visit one, this is it. Of course you could spend days on end exploring the countless incredible museums in Paris, but the Musée d'Orsay should be at the top of your list. You hear a lot about the Louvre and might find yourself thinking about the Louvre vs Musée d'Orsay, wondering which is more worthy of your time. While the Louvre is amazing - and it is! - I still recommend visiting the Musée d'Orsay, if you have to choose. Even if you don't consider yourself an art lover, I can almost guarantee you will recognize many of the paintings here. It's the largest collection of impressionist and post-impressionist art in the world (from 1848 to 1914) and includes some of the most famous paintings ever by artists like Van Gogh, Renoir, Monet, and Degas. The history and architecture of the building itself is fascinating, too, and you'll be shocked to hear that it was almost demolished. Thankfully it was saved and turned into the world-class museum and art gallery you see today. Watch the video for more information and tips on getting the most out of your visit.

Which would you pick: Musée d'Orsay or the Louvre? 🤔
@brandonburrell8517

They're both astonishing and not to be missed. But Musee d'Orsay gets underdog points. And, Impressionism is the summit of artistic expression in the Western World so. . .

D’Orsay is so much easier to navigate since it is more compact. I couldn’t find my way in the Louvre. Plus, I found the art exhibited at D’Orsay to be much more to my liking (so much religious art at The Louvre, which isn’t top on my “want to see” list).

Perhaps the Musée d'Orsay for its collection of impressionistic artworks, though being unfamiliar with everything that the Louvre is supposed to contain, it would be a hard comparison to do at this point. The Musée d'Orsay being featured in a great Doctor Who episode as they visit Vincent Van Gogh in his time, and then bring him into the present to show him his impact upon the world of art gave a bit of extra recognition to the Musée d'Orsay from it. It would be so amazing to see the actual works of art from all of those world-renowned impressionistic era painters in person. I'm definitely in need of getting to Paris at some point in the future to see that city and its culture in person.

As a Parisian, it is definitely my favourite museum as well! The building is amazing and it goes without saying that the masterpieces available there are extraordinary. Since the late 19th century is my favourite period in terms of art, it is always a delight to go visit. Plus, I have to say that I went back this August and, the fact that there are way less visitors due to Covid-19 pandemic, made the visit more enjoyable. I guess it's the same in every major museums around the world.

It's the best Museum in the world to me. I used to be a Heritage professional, and so after I visited Paris and finished my Master's in the UK I returned to my own country, Portugal, and sent an application (in French of course) to Le Musée d'Orsay, my favourite Museum in the world. I couldn't even believe it when I got a beautiful letter from them, letting me know that I hadn't been shortlisted, but in the kindest most beautiful way. I cried just because I had received a letter from them haha And I swear it was just so beautifully written, acknowledging my fabulous experience and qualifications and all. I wasn't a perfect fit for the role, far from it, because my background was in Archaeology, not the Arts lol but I'd tried it anyway, 'cause I figured what the heck, what have I got to lose?! So I seriously wasn't expecting to get short listed, and was just really happy to know that the people who worked in my favourite museum in the whole world, were so wonderful, attentive, kind, professional, respectful and polite. I just love France, love Paris! I would visit it every year if I could. I have always been very happy in France. Visiting Versailles made me feel like a queen myself, and Orsay makes me feel like a 19th century Lady. The old country, of the Museums and palaces, just hosts you with such finesse and in such great style!! Truly wonderful pieces of heaven on earth some places are. I actually regretted having chosen Archaeology in Uni after I visited Paris. If only I had visited Paris and Orsay before going to University I would have definitely chosen the Arts, ah well, life. My sister chose Arts' Curation and abandoned her law BA in her 4th year, after visiting Paris lol She was still in time to do that. Left her law BA in Portugal and flew to London to Central Saint Martins. With a Master's in Public Archaeology and all it was a bit too late for me, after all the money that I'd just spent in London on it. C'est la vie.

Just a correction: Yes, musée d'Orsay used to be a train station, but it wasn't originally built for this purpose. It was actually a palace that burned down, and then they rebuilt it into a train station for the exposition universelle in France in 1900.

In 1982, the Musée du Jeu de Paume was my favorite Paris museum. With the impressionist art moving from there in the later 80s, the Musée d'Orsay became my favorite. At first, I was skeptical that any venue could display the art as well as the Jeu de Paume, but the spacious and beautiful former railway station quickly won me over (including so much more than just the impressionist art). Thanks for creating this terrific video (and the others in your Paris series) -- it has been 20 years since I was last there; time for a return visit.

Short and sweet and I'll definitely be watching this one several times over :) I remember seeing a version of Degas's ballerina sculpture at the Norton Simon museum in Pasadena California. That makes me so happy to hear! Yes, I thought this one would resonate with your creative spirit! So cool that you were a Disney artist :) I find so much inspiration at this museum and the history of the building makes it even more special to me. I can't believe that restaurant used to be the 'dining hall' either - can you imagine?! So luxurious. I also love the ballerina sculpture by Degas (the one I'm looking at in this video). I remember seeing a picture of it in art class as a kid (I did ballet too) and falling in love. I had posters of some of these paintings up in my room for a long time. Orsay is my favorite museum in Paris. I visited it first than the Louvre. I have visited the museum twice the past 10 years. I'm coming back again this summer with my 8 year old daughter. I'll introduce her to Orangerie(as it's smaller and with Monet's famous water lilies) and Louvre(as the Mona Lisa is there and more well known for kids her age). We will definitely go back when she's more mature and have more understanding with art movements and style. I'll see if we have extra time(we are there 5 days with 3 day trips in the countryside) though as we enjoyed reading and watching Hugo Cabret and I always pictured out Orsay as the setting of the story. I would love to show her the big clocks that Hugo was working on.

Great video! I've always wanted to visit Paris, but I only get one vacation each year and I have very close personal ties to people in Asia and Africa, and so I keep going back to places like Nepal, India, The Gambia. This time I need to visit India during January. Delta Airlines offered the best fare for the dates I need, and the layovers both ways are in Paris. So I thought, what if I make this a multi-city flight, rather than just round-trip? Turns out the difference in price was only a couple hundred bucks, so now I've got three nights in Paris on my way home from Delhi. After watching this video, I will definitely visit the Musee d'Orsay. Looks like I should plan to spend a day there.

This was my favorite as well. I remember walking into the main room where all the impressionist paintings were, after having been saturated by renaissance paintings in Europe, and just feeling this breath of fresh air. It was awesome

I’m fortunate to live a train ride from Paris and visit all the art museums there frequently… but the Musee d’Orsay is my favourite. It is a big museum that somehow has the intimate feel of a small one. Their temporary exhibitions are exceptional (I just saw Rosa Bonheur, a fabulous animal painter who happened to befriend Buffalo Bill) and I am forever finding new works in the permanent collection that I never previously noticed or appreciated. Thanks for the video!

Hello! Thank you for your lovely comment. It is indeed lucky to live so close to Paris and be able to enjoy the temporary exhibitions as well. I agree that this museum has an intimate (almost cozy) feeling despite its size. Please continue to enjoy for all of us! :)

Love the place . Being English and an art lover (taken a degree in Humanities before I moved to USA) my favorite painting which I had to write an essay on is by Rex Whistler who lived in England and it it Whistler's Mother or more correctly Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1. Really though I rate the Louvre slightly higher than M de O mainly because I prefer Classicism to Impressionism but to each his own

I've visited this museum many times and just love it. It's everything you say it is. However, there are some other museums in Paris dedicated to other topics. For example the Musée de Cluny, also known as the Musée National du Moyen Âge (middle ages) is spectacular in its own right, albeit with different subject matter.

Thank you for recommending another museum for us! Our "next time in Paris" list continue to grow. We've made other videos about Paris that will interest you as a fellow lover of the city. the Musee d'orsay looks amazing for the inside. When I watched the first few minutes I already wanted to jump on a plane to France to visit. It will be on my bucket list now when I am visiting France. It was an interesting fact that it was used as a post office in the second world war, that makes it even more interesting. Thanks for sharing

LOOOOOVE Musée dÓrsay and would chose it over Louvre anytime....the ambiance, the collections, the sheer awesomeness of the whole building makes it a pleasure to visit every time. Maybe I'm a bit biased, because my second favorite art movement ( first being a shared places between surrealism and magical realism) is impressionism. Impressionism has the ability to show movement in a still picture and to make people realize art is not only for the elitist, but for everybody to understand and enjoy. Thank you so much for this amazing video...makes me want to jump on the TGV tomorrow and visit Paris.

Your passion for art is obvious and it's awesome! I love Impressionism too. I love how Van Gogh can paint the wind. The Louvre is incredible too, in its own way, but I also connect more with Orsay. The history of the building, and knowing it might've been lost forever, makes me love it even more ❤️

I used to dream of visiting Paris because of the Eiffel Tower, but now, after learning more about the arts and humanities, and becoming an art lover myself, I'd say the things I'm looking for the most in Paris now would be to visit the Louvre Museum and Musee D-Orsay more than the Eiffel Tower, also the English bookstore, being also a bookworm myself.

It will be so nice when countries are able to open up again once all of this current pandemic stuff is over with & people from around the world able to visit places like the Musée d'Orsay. All fans of it, will have "Van Gogh" there ( to borrow the pun that another did)(though I've heard some pronounce it more (phonetically: "Van Goff", i.e the British). If things work out & the world is able to open back up at some point not too far ahead, tons of people will be flocking back to there again to see all of the amazing sights in there & around Paris in general.

Luckily, when I went it wasn't nearly as busy. I credit the collection with helping me have a better understanding and appreciation for the origins of the modern art movement. I really enjoyed some of the technically brilliant works that that were on the cusp of the change, that gave way, through the salon system, to work that I use to think was painted by near-sighted artists who lost their glasses. 😅

M'O is my prefered museum... for the former railways station architecture, for its permanent collections, for its temporary expositions, and it's at human size. And if you are here the first sunday of a month, it's free entrance, so be early and prepared to wait before entry ! The Louvres museum is great, of course, but so huge, you cannot visit it in one day, so sometimes, i choose to see just a part specific of it. That means you need days to visit it, and there's so many different things... it's i fact several museums in one place.

"M´O" (Musée d´Orsay) Mansão das artes. Sou conduzido por entre as flores. Uma circunscrição em tela. Sou inspirado pelas artes. Sou parte da arte. Sou a arte! Torno-me um monumento do vasto Musée d’Orsay. Dhiogo Caetano

"La Petite Danseuse" is not only the sculpture of a young dancer. Today, people forget what it meant to be a young dancer at that time : it meant that you were poor, and that you will probably end up being the mistress of some rich man. What Degas created with this sculpture is a representation of an outcast, of a young girl whose destiny and fate are not hers. There is a famous painting by Degas showing what was on in the Opera : on this painting, you see all the young dancers and, in the gallery, old and rich men with hat watching at the girls. They are predators.
