In this final Musa Basjoo update video of the year, I give an early October update on the Musa Basjoo banana plant I am growing outside in the UK. Musa Basjoo is the cold hardiest banana that you can grow and does really well here in our cool summers in the UK. I will also post an overwintering video later in late autumn/early winter just before we get any hard frosts, to show how I will be protecting it this year.

That's a seriously impressive clump of bananas now Peter, they've really taken off.

Thanks Brett! Yeah, they've definitely got a lot more established this year! I'm thinking of experimenting with one or two of my edible varieties and protecting them in the ground like the basjoo this year.

@@PeterEntwistle I'm guessing that with enough layers of protection, almost anything might survive

@@lyonheart84 Yeah, I know people have managed to overwinter some of the ones I have growing in parts of the US that get much colder winters than we get. But they do give them more protection than I gave my basjoo last year.

Yours has grown so much this year. Thanks for sharing! Mine has a lot les leaves than yours but is more tall and slender! Very interesting’

Thanks, Jerry! Yeah, the main plant that I overwintered last year didn't seem to get very tall this year, it did thicken up quite a bit at the base though. I think it focused a lot more on the pups, which have almost reached the same height as the mother in one growing season. I probably should have removed some of them earlier in the year. It will be interesting to see what happens with them next year though.

Hi peter they look amazing! Head over to Himalayan gardens... check out the Musa’s you can order there. Thought I’d tell you first maybe it would be good to do a video telling people about being able to get some awesome varieties at low prices.

Thanks! I've just taken a quick look at their website, they have some very interesting plants. Have you ever purchased any plants from them?

Hi Peter, your Musa Basjoo are looking great for this time of year. Hopefully we don’t get a really cold winter. My St Helen’s has also produced a number of pups. I’ll probably transplant next spring. How are your other bananas doing?

Thanks Joe! Yeah, they seem to have done really well this year. Yeah, I really hope we have a mild winter again. I'm thinking of experimenting with overwintering some of the edible varieties in the ground this winter. I will try and do some more updates of some of them soon 👍
