Opera is full of terrifying moments featuring women in extremis, but there is nothing quite like the Kostelnička's Act Two monologue from Janáček's Jenufa. This is the scene where Jenufa's foster mother decides to "solve" her problems by murdering Jenufa's newborn baby.
