Muscle Car Quarter Panel Replacement at Home - Road Runner Clone

The worst part about rust repair, is you usually have to do the same job twice. 2 quarter panels, 2 doors and 2 fenders. This 1968 Plymouth Satellite was no different, it needed both quarter panels replaced. The car is now officially rust free! Unfortunately I now have to take on the body work for primer and paint.
Let me know what you guys think. Any tips or tricks?

Great job! As a 30 year body and paint tech, 20 in restoration, you are doing fine. Only repair what you have to, why replace the whole thing when a skin and edge repair is all you need! The only thing I do different than you, I would have taken the top all the way to the edge like you did the rest of it. I was taught it takes less to clean up the weld seam on that bend as it distorts less. But,!tomato, tamato, right?😆

Great video brother! I have a 1970 Roadrunner and I took it to a body shop #yachtsandrods in North Vancouver and the owner (Mike) is a complete donkey. My car has been there for 7 years waiting to get done. He cut the quarters off and now doesn't want to work on it anymore. I can't believe the guy. ANYWAY.... I am now going to bring it home and do it myself. This will help me a lot.

Lol many years ago when I first started doing this kind of work, we used pop rivets and even brazing as methods to attach panels and patches. We did not have mig welders back then. When we brazed panels we had to control the heat by using wet rags in a bucket of water, we have come a long way since then. Now they are using glue for some panels now. Btw Those trunk " drop downs " are called trunk extensions in case you wanted to know. Geat job on the old Plymouth!

I just want to tell you Just How much I wanted to do EXACTLY the kind of work you do. I'm just an older backyard Mechanic who never got Certified an never pursued a life long dream of doing what you do. To me what you do daily I call FUN! My career that I've had for 36 years has got nothing to do with anything automotive. & although I can't blame anyone but myself for my choices I get to see your vids an realize I still can do some of it. Although restorations are expensive an I got no contacts in places that could help a guy achieve a completed build w/much some MUCH needed help.I am always envious of your completed builds. Am always entertained an glad for the insights you bring that either I've forgotten or just plain didn't know about. Nowadays the older cars are pricey to get an are really in much needed of help to get back there former luster. But it can be done.I won't lie I don't possess all of the tools an a large workspace to do it all in. But I will eventually change that as I have a build in mind an will go "shopping" for a car I've long since wanted to own an restore myself. Thank you very much for your videos an please keep them coming. Am a fan & a subscriber.

In fact, after watching y'all using the cut off wheel,, I went to hbr frgt and bought one! Imagine- my age and still buyin tools.. now, just my opinion,, I think that Plymouth would look good painted the original color.. maybe break it up with a satin black hood... And ,,of course ,, black steel wheels, with dog dish hub caps. I know y'all like the ratty look,, but this Mopar deserves better.. Great videos kid,, you teach me something everyday.. PW

I am liking your installation technique. I have installed a few body panels and aligned several fenders, doors ECT. One thing that might assist you in the welding on a LONG panel seam is keeping a wet rag in your opposite hand and quenching each stitch weld as soon as you do it. This helps me in keeping the warpage issue down. ;)

Once again Dan, great work. I am not a fan of doing quarters, the 72 Cutlass on my rotisserie needs the quarters finish welded, its been waiting almost two years for me to get back to it. Have to do the trunk drops, wheel wells, and the rocker joint. Its a ton of work and right now I am putting 6.0/Th350 into my 76 C10. The heat in my shop isn't great so i spend more time standing by the heater than I do working when its colder than freezing. When you get the new larger shop, do yourself a huge favor and get a lift. I splurged on a two post Bendpak, I use that thing constantly. I want a four post to put next to it, but a small scissors lift would work good for what you do. They are movable and run on 110v. Lift the car put it on jackstands, pull the lift out for transmission work. Otherwise what you need is some dollies, I have two pair I use on long term projects, maybe you could get the viewer guys to chip in and get you some of the fancy ones that don't need a jack to get the car on them. They make moving the car around in a small space a lot easier and faster. Well worth the investment.
