I saw this painting when visiting the Imperial War Museum here in London. It is most impressive in scale and effect on the viewer. The subject matter is deeply shocking and disturbing. Reading accounts of soldiers choking to death brought the painting very much alive to me. It certainly makes a vivid anti war case, condemning those who caused the conflict utterly.
