Exceptional Armchairs circa 1820 by one of the most renowned master furniture makers of the day, Jean-Jacques Werner 1791-1849. These unique pieces date from the restoration period (1815-1830) which is named for the restoration of the Bourbon Monarchy in post Napoleonic France. They are veneered in burl ash, a blond wood for which both this maker and period are celebrated.
These armchairs are equivalent to various published chairs by Werner, and many pieces in the Paris Museum of Decorative Arts. I am pleased to preserve a digital trace of them online and to present an overview here which I hope you will enjoy, and which may even inform your own collecting.
These videos also intend to highlight the difference between these original, pre-industrial period pieces (works of art) and everything else usually made much later that we ambiguously call “antiques.”
Many thanks to all viewers and subscribers,
