When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’. Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’ Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RU-vid. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RU-vid in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora. Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉. Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020, and new album Yesterwynde, was announced on April 30, 2024, and is set for release on September 20, 2024. And the master of this magic is: Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish) Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot. This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people (one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany). Tarja is/was a operatic singer that tried a little rock. Floor is a Rock/Metal singer that has done operatic and musical training. Four years of Rock Academy and one year each of Belcanto and Musical Theatre at the conservatory. Floor started singing in a band (After Forever) at the age of 16. She has a LOT of experience. She also worked as a vocal coach for a few years. She really studied the voice. When the second singer (Tarja was the first) quit in the middle of the US tour. Floor was called in to substitute till the end of the tour and a year later she was announced as the new lead singer.

Glad you decided to react to this band,This is with their 3rd singer Floor Jansen,a 6’1” Dutch vocal beast..They’re definitely a band that are better live,their studio stuff is good but it’s their live performances where they shine…they go from operatic though to rock,folk,Celtic and on to thrash and everything in between,hope you decide to dip your toe into some more..if you do then definitely use Gabriel’s list as it has the best quality videos performance and audio wise.👍

Floor is simply the Cinderella shoe that fits just right. Her vocal range and ability to bring different qualities (emotion, soft, rough, power etc.) into the vocals brings it all together. Excellent reaction! You made some good observations and didn’t pause the music too much and you obviously enjoyed yourself! Yes, Floor is a totally different singer to Tarja. Tarja was very good at what she did, but it did limit Nightwish to a certain style. Floor can sing in any style, from opera to growls, sometimes within the same song! Tarja was fired in 2005 and she hasn't been a part of the band for much longer than she was, so Tarja is a long gone history for Nightwish.

The festival in Wacken started in 1990. 800 visitors. 2020 there were 100.000 metalheads. Wacken has a population of just over 2000....

The main difference between Tarja and Floor is that Floor does not have limits. Tarja sings her pseudo-opera, and that is all she does. Here you have heard maybe ten percent of Floor's capabilities.

Welcome to Nightwish! I happened upon Nightwish over 5 years ago...as I listened to Floor singing "Ghost Love Score" and my first thoughtwas, why haven't I heard of Nightwish before now? I am 66 years old and grew up listening mainly to heavier rock bands, Ozzy & Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Boston, AC/DC, and many more...but Nightwish... They are in a league all their own. I sang in with a traveling choir in the early 1980's after I recovered from multiple operations on my left knee and thigh ( Sports injury ). It was impossible for me to stand for an hour and a half or more until 1982. We sang mainly in churches or community centers. Enjoy Nightwish! You will find d that their music spans many genres... so be prepared to surprised!

Nightwish does incorporate Irish or celtic as well as classical composition elements in the music Tuomas writes. Some other songs are very folkish. fyi, there is a backing track in this song providing the additional orchestra and choir parts not played on the keyboards.

Nightwish since 1996. edit: comparisons can still be controversial if you know their history. All three of the Nightwish singers are brilliant and have different aspects of their vocals which suit the material written for them but Floor seems to blend her predecessors effortlessly.

Nightwish -- a band consisting of truly talented musicians who play for the song. No egos here and the end result is a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. I really hope that you continue on your Nightwish journey because there is so much more to discover. I would, however, be hesitant to do any direct comparisons of the three female vocalists. You would find that some of the Army have very vehement opinions on which singer is "best". I like them all, and enjoy their differences that, together make Nightwish what it is today.

I just love choir music! It never fails to make me cry. It's a good thing I have a terrible singing voice - I'm pretty sure choir directors wouldn't be too interested in having a crybaby in their choir. LOL

I think watching Tarja Turunen perform Ghost Love Score would be a great idea! The song was written with her voice and style in mind, but I would agree that she leans more operatic than Floor Jansen does.

Yeah, some great comments, especially regarding the complexity of the music with the instrumentation, orchestra, choir, key changes, time signature changes. Nightwish aren't just about a great performance, they are also about great song writing.

Singer sings what they can, Floor sings what she whants! For me she is the best female singer in Rock/ Metal out there. She can take the high notes, she can take the low notes, she can even growl. Tarja was awesome with the operatic voice, but nothing left and right, Anette was a poppy voice but coudn't serve the operatic voice, Floor can serve both worlds and even more, she is the metal godess we don't deserve. Plus she is a very grounded, friendly and kind hearted person

Floor can seemingly do any style or color she wants. It shows her versatility. I'm not a big fan of the operatic sound where you can't understand the lyrics and it just sounds muddy. It's usually not in good timing either for some reason. Floor has trained hard to overcome all of those issues.

Never a good idea to compare singers. There are strong feelings amongst the Nightwish fans (known as the Nightwish Army) who are likely to give you grief if you make an unfavourable comparison. Tarja has a solo career and has made some phenomenally beautiful albums, particularly her most recent Xmas album. She made videos for each track and all could be happily seen throughout the year. If you want to hold back till Xmas before listening to them look for any one of the live videos of her singing "Pie Jesu".

During her time with Nightwish, Tarja had already complained about the other band members that they were constantly drinking. She was already a bad Finn back then ;-) The other band members often got drunk after the shows or played drinking games on the way. They still drink alcohol on stage today. Tuomas also forced the first bass player out of the band because he was drunk on stage. These guys know when they can drink a lot. Tarja was fired back in 2005 due to personal and artistic differences. The song here is one of Tarja's Era. The Wacken Open Air takes place on a former cattle pasture, which is why the festival has a bull skull as its logo. Today it is a hayfield. The contrast between female voice and hard sound is typical of symphonic metal: Within Temptation - Bleed Out (official music video) VISIONS OF ATLANTIS - Pirates Will Return (Official Live Video) | Napalm Records MALEVOLENT - "The awakening" (Cinematic Playthrough Music Video) Strictly speaking, Finns were not Vikings. Hello, To inform you about song choices for Nightwish it is of great importance to know NOT listen/watch the following two songs in the beginning of your Nightwish journey. - "The Poet and the Pendulum" - "The Greatest Show on Earth" The reason for this is, those 2 songs are long and especially the first one holds a very deep meaning to the bandmembers of Nightwish themselves. So it's important to experience these songs after some other songs when you start to know the band a little bit more. Some song suggestions for Nightwish which will be certainly interesting - "Storytime" - "Romanticide" (This one is a bit harder in comparison with "Ghost Love Score".) - "Yours is an Empty Hope" Live from Wembley (Floor will surprise you in this song with her vocal capabilities.) - "Ever Dream" - "I Want my Tears Back" - "The Islander" (This one almost completely sung by Marco, the bass player.) - ...... Other 'Wacken 2013' songs from Nightwish. Nightwish is amazing but there are other symphonic metal bands you you should check out as well. Regarding listening to both Tarja and Floor I would say yes but only so you listen to them. No comparison required,, they have different styles plain and simple😊

The song is not the best display of the singers range, but it is the best introduction to the band, by far.

If you do a comparison Nemo is a good song for that. And you can compare all 3 singers: Tarja, Anette, and Floor. But you're in for a treat as you delve deeper into the band with their musicianship across multiple styles. Enjoy the journey!

Welcome to the magical world of Nightwish full of musical surprises and great emotions, new subscriber here. First of all, it was a wonderful reaction. I thoroughly enjoy seeing a responder hear Floor sing for the first time and seeing him enjoy what he hears. You probably already fell in love with this band and Floor's singing voice. I welcome you to the NW army, our growing fan base. They don't have any bad songs, they are all different from each other. both Tarja and Floor sing exactly this GSL you just watched, here you can also find Nemo, Ever dream, Starzinger, Phantom of the opera. Both versions are lovely. But I absolutely love Tarja and Marko's version of phantom, the others are equal and always sound like the best possible version of the song depending on the mood and emotions.

Comparisions of Tarja vs Floor are interesting if you have more to give than "I like her more". For many songs one style fits better than the other. For me, the performance of cover Phantom of the Opera from year 2005 End of an Era concert is still the best performance of that song by any performer. Tarja did that performance with Marko, and Floor performed the same song with Henk last year so if you want to make a comparision that could be one pair of songs to compare.

There's a lot of debate when it comes to Tarja vs Floor. They're both incredible, but the one thing I'll say is that Floor can sing all of Tarja's songs. I doubt Tarja could sing all of Floor's.
