It’s interesting that you mentioned Stravinsky right away, because the composer of this track, Nobuo Uematsu, mentioned that Stravinsky was a huge inspiration for him when he wrote the original. What’s also interesting is the way he composed the track. He came up with a lot of unique, short melodies and later put them together, almost like a puzzle. Needless to say, you should definetly check out the original version from Final Fantasy 7 and the version from the FF7 Remake called “One Winged Angel-Rebirth”.

The composer of the original piece “One-Winged Angel” from Final Fantasy 7 was Nobuo Uematsu. This arrangement features the progressive metal band The Black Mages which Uematsu was formerly a member of.

This track is a remix made for the FFVII movie, all the rock stuff with the guitars and drums..etc is not in the original. It's made to fit the scene that it plays in, with all the action and dialogue involved. I encourage you to listen to the original one winged angel, you won't regret it .

Nobuo stated that when writing this song, he would write two to four scores a day until he had about thirty, and after deciding on the first two to start the song, rearranged the remaining until they fit together in a jigsaw kind of way. Which leads to the song having that sporadic feeling of uneasiness.

I was at the concert where they performed this for the first time. The movie hadn't even released yet so nobody had heard this version before. Easily my favorite moment from any concert.

If you want this song but longer and all orchestral: One Winged Angel Rebirth. It's easily my favorite version of it.

That little part at 10:35 is from the orchestral version of One Winged Angel, which I'd argue is the more memorable descendant of the original game track. The heavy rock sound of the version you're listening to was composed for the "Advent Children" movie, and while it brings ideas from the orchestrated version along, the heavy rock stuff strongly dominates. It's meant to accompany a climactic scene in the movie, so I get the idea, but it's also very, very busy. The orchestral version though? Wonderful. Nobuo Uematsu composed many of my favorite videogame tracks and music in general. He's very strong at writing simple, catchy melodies and spreading leitmotifs across the whole soundtrack. It's a unique experience to see a self-taught musician start with NES chiptunes and adapt their music with each generation of technology all the way through to live progressive metal and symphonic arrangements.

This track is actually from the movie Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. Smash Bros is just using that track. It's not actually from Smash Bros. BTW. Have you played FFVII? FFVII & FF in general has some of the best game OST ever, if not the best! Would love if you dived deeper!

The composer is Nobo Uematsu who made most of the tracks from final fantasy series.. He wanted a mix of Stravinsky and Jimmy Hndrix... He also wanted it to sound menacing because it is Spehiroths inner turmoil

The most iconic final boss theme

As others have said, the composer is the master Nobuo Uematsu. He is regarded as one of the best composers of the Final Fantasy franchise and not only that, but gaming in general. Even tho I'm not sure if Final Fantasy VII was the 1st one who did it, it definitely has the most memorable boss fight music WITH LYRICS. I think no other videogame had clear lyrics before. To put into context: you have (kind of) fought with Sephirot during the entire game, so the final boss you have to go trough 2 phases and when you think it's done, the screen goes entire to black then, suddendly, One Winged Angel (not this version, the OG version) starts to sound, screen goes to bright white and Sephirot appear in his safer form, straight to heaven to earth. It's really something the 1st time you experience that battle and how difficult it can be/over the top. There's another piece that I like even more than One Winged Angel and it's Dancing Mad. It last 16 minutes of barroco/classical type of music and, as Jeremy Jahns said about that piece in particular "For a musician, the SNES sound engine is like an artist using Crayola crayons. Nobuo Uematsu used Crayola crayons to paint the Sistine Chaps"

I'm sure since this video is a year old and this is fairly well known that you likely already know or the comment was already made. However, the composer, Uematsu, did an interview on how he came up with One-Winged Angel. According to Uematsu, he actually composed each individual piece separately and did a sort of puzzle like thing where he put the pieces together like some Frankenstein's monster kind of deal to see what would sound best and ended up creating one of the most well known pieces in video game history and then proceeded to never do that again. Its amazing

I just wanna say that i heard this first time waaay back in 2005, watching it with my highschool friends. Our jaws collectively dropped. One: sephiroth appeared for that final fight with cloud. Two: THIS SOUNDTRACK Aerial, superpowered swordfight with this music playing in the back. N this was 2005, so the CGI for that time was nothing short of mindblowing.

Just to reiterate a what people have said here, the black mages version, which was this one, is great when put in context with the movie Advent Children. That middle section where the guitar solo and the riffs are at add to sephiroth talking smack to cloud etc etc. The original version which is just the orchestra and choir, that's some next level stuff 👌

There's also the original version of the song and several orchestral remakes and remasters of the song (no guitar). But no matter what version you listen to, it's all great. It's an iconic piece fit for a legendary character~

the original One Winged Angel is all orchestral btw, this one is a Metal Version made for the movie. Just a quick fact though

not scrolling through all the comments, someone probably said it, there's lots of changes basically like movements and in short intervals and the like. In a lot of games certain sections will repeat to a point and then in a new boss phase a new movement will play. It might not make a lot of sense as a standalone to have so much happen in one song, but it's what it represents.

The part that you said the song was building anticipation and the part where you said you were the most impressed, those two segments actually were composed together in the original song, One Winged Angel. The heavy metal was incorporated into this song as the style of the movie was a bit edgy and the original characters were always kind of edgy anyways. But I always loved how the orchestra was building so much suspense, then a lone flute breaks that suspension with a little melodic line. I prefer the OG, but I appreciate this version too, for what it’s worth.

I think you should hear the version from the remake of FF7, One winged Angel Rebirth. An amazing, relentless version of this song that I think does an amazing job of paying Homage to the original with its own madhouse vibes.

I always love One Winged Angel. The original piece comes from boss BGM in FFVII, before being remixed for Advent Children movie, which is this one. They don't do much modification (maybe none?) when they added it to Smash Bros., probably because it's already perfect to begin with.

This tune may as well be the Imperial March of video gaming. It's no doubt one of the most recognizable and beloved villain themes in gaming and immediately identifiable with Sephiroth to anyone who knows the name.

Very telling that what you liked less is the stuff they added to the original one winged angel from ffvii. Look for the version in Nobuo Uematsu's channel (he's the composer), the distant worlds one is pretty good. This one is ok and fits advent children, but I like the orchestral better. Or for a metal version, the one the black mages did (now that I think about it, I think it's the same you heard, but I don't remember it sounding so busy. Nostalgia, maybe?)

I love how the only part you thought was mid, was the part added for that version for the Advent Children movie. You thoroughly enjoyed pretty much all of the original version (first half and last part). Honestly you're right, this rearrangement has some indesirable new elements that were added to it.

So, the original piece was made for the old video game called Final Fantasy 7, the song is called the same, One Winged Angel, the creator for this one is called Nobuo Uematsu. This was the version for the movie called Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, as someone pointed out already (in the comment section). Nobuo Uematsu also had a hand in this version, but rather than making the piece for a game, he had to write it for a movie. A remake of the Final Fantasy 7 was made a few years ago. The version we got from the remake is called One Winged Angel: Rebirth. Nobuo Uematsu, the original creator at least had a good hand in remaking this masterpiece, which he had made a few of according to me at least, that he has made. You should definitely try the REBIRTH version from the remake, it's way more orchestral and has some very interesting sections that expand on this one!

I was normally going to leave a negative remark but I had found myself lacking in giving an actual critique that didn't sound like was just throwing personal opinion at you. Overall keep doing what you are doing. It is fantastic to learn and figure out the stuff hidden in the background that I wouldn't notice because I am such a casual listener. (even though i say music is my life) but i guess that is why Japanese music is what I listen to the most.

Maybe I’m making connections where non exist however is the choir meant to have a resemblance to church music? The sound of them just reminded me of being in church and hearing the choir singing in Latin. Also by a story perspective this would make sense as it could be a reference to Sephiroth’s god-like power.

Nobuo Uematsu IS Final Fantasy music the same way Koji Kondo IS Mario/Legend of Zelda, or Shoji Meguro IS Persona. Just absolute icons. Nobuo is a mad scientist though. He creates stuff like the Advent Children version of OWA just because he’s that good and he can make it all come together seamlessly. Blue Dragon is another example of a god tier OST and game from Square thanks to Nobuo. Chrono Trigger is yet another banger due to a great game and great music. Wiz Khalifa samples Chrono Trigger in Never Been. Let’s just say the fans weren’t happy with that one. I personally like the song and think it’s EASILY one of his best, and not just for the sample use.

You gotta react to Two Planets Approach the Roache Limit from Kirby and the Forgotten Land or Star Conquering Traveler/True Destroyer of Worlds (Astral Birth Void) from Kirby Star Allies they're big orchestral songs in the same vein as One Winged Angel and I think you'd enjoy them a lot

Definitely underappreciated the guitar work throughout the song. It's certainly not the most complex part but the way it fits into the original sound/mood of the song, and the movie this version* was made for, is nothing short of perfect. *This is not the original One Winged Angel but "Advent: One Winged Angel" a version made for the movie inspired by the original game. It was remade a third time for the new remake of Final Fantasy 7, but the newest remake is the weakest version in my opinion, with the Advent version being my favorite and the original a close second.

As other people mentioned in various comments, this song was pieced together from a whole bunch of disconnected ideas. That is however absolutely not how he operates typically. What really gets me is despite the disjointed nature of the various themes he used, the song still stays in the same sonic space, allowing all the themes to fit together and sound like parts of a cohesive whole. Although the switching between metal and orchestral in this particular arrangement does ruin that cohesion somewhat in my opinion.
