Music for free?
This is one of those questions I receive all the time: where can you get music for free?
Although I love the fact that you ask me questions, you have to realize that asking DJ's who spent a lot of time and money to build their music collection where you can get music for free, it's a bit disrespectful.
It's a lot easier and cheaper to become a DJ nowadays. You can get buy an entry level controller for less than $200,- and sources like iTunes and beatport offer music for very low prices. You can even join a DJ pool for $20,- per month and download all the music they have in their archive.
Even with this knowledge you still want to get your music for free?
15 years ago you had to buy an entire DJ set (two turntables and a mixer) to get started. Then you had to go buy records to able to play music. From 2002 I was paying €12,- ($15,-) for one 12 inch single that had 2 songs. In the US it was a lot cheaper, but you still paid between $4,- and $6,- for a 12 inch. In my case I had to buy a lot of 12 inches double for turntablism purposes.
What I'm trying to say is that you had to invest a lot of money to be able to play music. Even if it was just as a hobby!
So if you are not willing to invest the small amount of money that is needed to get music today, maybe you should just leave DJ'ing to the people who really want to do this ;)
Let's continue the conversation in the comments, but NO links to illegal sources for music please. Your comments will be deleted.
Enjoy the video and share the knowledge!

I lived this reality. $20 for a CD!!! Spend hours a week visiting CD stores to choose what to buy! Twenty box a month for unlimited download is a dream that came true! I don't feel confortable not paying for the songs. Everybody deserves to be paid for his/her effort!

I agree the only problem is half the songs aren't available on DJ Pools so I'm not really sure what else I can do as my budget is small so I can't individually purchase each song either.

times are changing man, global communication and easy access to sick tunes are the future for the best DJ's, Uve made it, so stop holding on to the day when u had to go to the record shop and just be happy that it wasn't so hard to stand out in a world where u can do anything you want

I love your videos and I'm so glad you didn't promote free downloading. I've been djing since the late 80's and I have a an extensive record collection still. But I can't understand why new dj's think 20 or 30 dollars a month for unlimited downloads is expensive. I've probably invested tens of thousands of dollars on my record collection and still to this day purchase vinyl I love. But i must say today's way of just paying a nominal fee to get thousands of songs is much appreciated. I also feel we should support the artists because they work very hard to bring all this great music to us so we can entertain others with it. So in closing, kudos to you for not promoting illegal downloads. Much respect!

Thank you for keeping it real! I hear this all the time as well and I come across many DJs that will not got their music from legitimate sources,but they miss the most important part to SUPPORT the artists that make it POSSIBLE for them to DJ!! also getting sketchy MP3s sometimes can fail you since the quality is VERY questionable, volumes might match and so on.... Cheers! and keep spinning!

I spend more money on music than anything else. Collecting music, supporting artists, and sharing new music that many have not heard yet is my favorite thing. That's why I DJ! My favorite thing to do with the money I earn is to invest in my collection and buy new music. DJ pools are a great option for many, but I play more underground styles and events so for me I like to find each track or album on my own. I dig deep and like to play music that most people wouldn't stumble upon on their own. As a music lover, I still cherish the feeling of buying a new album and just sitting down alone with headphones and listening from beginning to end.
@minigand
@minigand 10 лет назад
This used to be a real option like 3 years ago. I used to just straight up download from blogs because they always got the tracks first and the quality usually was "acceptable". People just don't give out mp3s anymore :'(. But yeah there are straight up free DJ pools out there and it isn't that hard to find free music for certain genres still. I think beyond telling people about DJ pools there's not much else to say.
@djphaseout8027

Here is how i feel on the subject, years ago when i first started, i had to pay for everything. i started djing in 1977 and i had to buy my music. there was never a time back then that you could get free music. so why do some people think because they are a DJ music should be free for them? why would you ask another DJ for music that they spent their hard money to get?
@ZacharyHcaze
@ZacharyHcaze 9 лет назад
The artists and music that I buy, usually comes from musicians, djs, producers who take their craft very seriously and run labels as well. I try to put myself in their shoes and ask myself would I like it if people downloaded my work illegally.. the answer is no. They have to make a living.. So support the artists you like and don't buy it if you don't like it- simple.

This one of the things I miss about being in Europe. When I was stationed in Germany, I used to go to WOM (World of Music). Aw man, talk about a music lover's paradise!!! Spent major money there, plus I could get a lot of unreleased tracks that weren't available state side, I tried Lime Wire when it was out it was a hit or miss, mostly be been using Rhapsody, but I'm definitely going to check in with digital dj pool!

Damn TLM this takes me back to 1996. I started DJing with CDs first one I bought was Fugees - The Score. I remember saving for like 2 months before buying a CD, now these kids have it so easy they don't even know it. I got like way over 10,000 albums now in my collection, can't tell u how far & wide I had to travel at times back in those days just to get a SINGLE track I wanted. But hey it was & is all for the true LOVE of music!

Money shouldn't be the reason people aren't allowed to pursue their dreams. It's real easy for someone with money to talk down on people who don't have that luxury, but trying to find ways to accomplish your goals without it isn't... part of pursuing your goals involves making risky (& sometimes unethical) decisions but people learn from their mistakes.

I've spend years collecting and searching music off of CDs and idk if it was legal but I had ARES and limewire Back when everyone had it. Now I've been using digital dj pool for $14 a month I get all the right music I want. They have a lot of house and hip hop but they're very updated and upload daily on the hip hop and bangers. Just sharing my thought.

Sergio Gonzalez And with the DJ pool you know that the tracks will be quality. You never knew what you were getting with Limewire and other 'services' like that. Even if the file description said 320, a lot of times it turned out to be crappy 128 mp3's ;)
@boricuachamp

Facts about the fake 320 bitrate files lol I very quick found that out when I plugged in old so music from my '04 flash drive and it was all glitchy 128 bit songs

Btw, you can check the real bitrate by using programs like "Spek" or "Adobe Audition" to see where the MP3's low-pass filter is set. Just google for "MP3 real bitrate" and you'll find a lot of tutorials. And if you wanna get your music for free: #warez

Sergio Gonzales, do you know of any DJ pools (or any other media forms) that have every song from most hip-hop/rap artists (mostly artists that aren't as popular)? I am having trouble finding ways to download every song from certain artists like Lil Skies. Some DJ pools like DJ City have a decent amount of hip-hop but they never have every song from certain artists. Im not sure what to do :/

you're right dj tlm, alot of my freinds ( which are djs as well) always ask for free music when it's cheap to get it! well there are some sites where they get free music but i don't want to name it, i tried to get music for free when i just started out ( at 10 years old ), and i found alot of free music but believe me the quallity was so bad and most of the time the volume was too low, i personnaly hate that. You can visit mixcloud or soundcloud and u can find some free stuff, or you can ask the uploader or the producer for it and he might give you. There are alot of music pools where you can get unlimited music with high quallity for a cheap amount ( 30 $ ), i advice you guys to forget about getting music for free, for me it's not my thing

Preach! No offense .. but a lot of people that get into Djin .. Don't belong! If you look for shortcuts, asking real djs about music & where they get it .. you're making yourself look amateur & clueless as to what it takes to work in this art form. Buy a handful of tracks that you like. Learn how to mix them a ton of different ways .. do it for a couple years .. at home. Learn everything you SHOULD know about being a DJ.. Then .. Maybe ... Maybe you'll get a gig. Guess what .. once that happens, you've got a bunch more to learn. It's not a game kids .. I don't care if you've got straight vinyl or the cheapest controller in the world... You'll be shit without the proper knowledge and practice. Good luck

Shyguy9971 you can also check for royalty free music, too... several underground artists share their stuff like that. BUT if ou ever gonna play that publicly or for money, you´d better tripple-check with the artist if that´s okay, or negotiate conditions with them... but for practicing at home, that´s your best chance on a low budget :)

Lomaximoproductios.com, prolatinremix.com, iTunes, these are the places I got to for music. Lo Maximo productions does have music for free to download from the artist. They use soundcloud to promote their stuff and lo Maximo productions is a website that channels that music from soundcloud. Completely free and completely legal. I also use prolatinremix.com for transitions, remixes and even Dj drops. I have found myself spending upwards of 80 bucks for 10 to 15 tracks, but it's worth it. To make money you have to spend movie and to me my craft would feel cheap if I didn't obtain my music the right way. So I agree with DJ TLM whole heartedly on this on.

Ok so in reference to free which means I balance my funds invested and used back to zero in a literal thought I used libraries to find older music copied the CDs I wanted and returned the items Second method actually made me money Posted multiple ads on the Internet for pick up of unwanted CDs vinyl 8-tracks and cassette tapes The CDs I copied, vinyl I checked the value then boxed up and listed the items for sale These two methods have boosted my private collection of songs to over 150,000 songs and funds my ability to purchase new content and hardware

I spend a good bit of money every month on music. It makes my mixes more quality. We've all been at the club and seen someone play a youtube rip or some other 120 mp3 where the bass is just completely flat. It just brings the dance floor energy way down.

I think, and this might not be the opinion of everybody, most important part for a DJ is to hav a good choice of music. Even if you hav a very different or mainstream taste u still hav to make good choices whats in you library and what ur goin to play durin a set. So these individuals who r askin for a library should do some reserches for themself becuz otherwise they miss the #1 work/art of a Dj. How you goin to mix, fade n play the music is called skills...with certain music. If you ask for a specific name of a song or artists its a different thing than askin for the whole library.

Although soundcloud is a great source for free music, even some of the files are not at 320 kbps. so if anyone wants to go that route make sure to get a bit rate analyzer such as Spek. Its a free download and you will be able to see the quality of your music. If this worries anyone. simply buy the music through music sites or Join a Dj pool! keep it up DJ TLM -Dj Bombino

I spent my money on buying mostly 12" singles and a lot of time searching for them. Often a friend and I would go to a record shop that was about 2 hours away just to buy good vinyl. I will admit that I have used torrents in the past. When I started I didn't really have an idea of what I was doing. It took a lot of experimenting and meeting people to figure this out. :-) One thing I learned though is that free music generally sucks. Most of the time. There is no quality control on torrents. Most are youtube rips, stream recordings etc. That stuff sounds like shit when it's turned up. Save yourself the hassle and find a good DJ pool.

Yeah, this is kind of an issue I've been running into with lots of my friends. You CAN download lots of music from MP3Skull, however, when you illegally download music that you like, you take money away from your artists and producers that you like. This means that the people who make music you like won't be able to support themselves and can't make more music that you like. Essentially, don't steal from people you like. I do, however, use MP3Skull to download music that I have to have, but don't like. Examples being Miley Cyrus, One Direction, etc.

Hey DJTLM, love the vids, please keep it up! I actually purchase all of my tracks that I DJ on Virtual DJ radio on iTunes. I have not had any issues and have not needed to find any alternative methods. The ONLY tracks I have ever not purchased, were free downloads on Soundcloud, or Official Label Torrents (OWSLA has done some). Otherwise I stick to my Morality guns. again, thank for all of your videos, tips, tricks, and advice. has really kept this N00B DJ (me) informed.

Can someone please explain to me how DJ pools are formed/ function in legal terms (I don't mean what service they provide the customer with)? I want to figure out if it is even possible to make one (eventually) that has more music available in certain genres that aren't in the DJ pools available ATM, I'm just not sure how I would do that.

Theres also much more competition now so many djs don't even make it anywhere. so they don't want to spend money if they can't even get recognized

There's a bunch of free stuff on Bandcamp, soundcloud etc. Many many netlabels are free on web, and SO much legal free from archive.org labels etc.

Being an 80s child, I remember going to my local record shop every friday, grabbing a pile of vinyl, and going through them one by one on the 1200s they had there. Then handing over a load of cash to take them home, I miss that experience without any doubt! I don't however miss the cost, yes, Ive got plenty of music on my computer obtained for free, most of it remixes people have done and uploaded that you wouldn't find on iTunes, beatport etc, as well as others. But the cost for a track these days, pennies.... compared to paying £5 - £10 per record? I could only by about 6 new tracks a week back then, I can grab 50 a week if I want now. cheap cheap cheap :)

I've been spinning records in nyc for over 30 years,,back in the day 8th ave, was the vinyl hub, we used to go pick up our sides in person at the record label offices(all promos for free) .during the 70's and 80's there was a great record pool "IDRC" they would also provide promo sides for djs. it's been several years and I lost contact with IDRC, does anyone in the dj community know anything about this record pool(does it still exist?,where are they located?) holler back.

One thing that always impresses me is your record case in the background. Did someone build that for you or can you buy that? I had about 4 large crates of music and I remember how much I spent on that. Otherwise, I used to hang out with a DJ in a record store who reported to Billboard and was in a record pool that way and he gave me a ton of his rejects. One reason I never became a DJ was I had one 1200 but could never get enough money to afford the second. I was scratching on cheap belt driven Gemini turntables but of course the needle wouldn't stay put. On top of that, I never could get the beat mixing down and I didn't stick with it. Then sadly, TLM I got really depressed one day in 1996 and gave away all my music. I would die to get it back now. Digital versions are not the same and I can't seem to get back to it using the new controllers with MP3s. I did get my nephew a nice Gemini CD mixer, since he has alot of CD's, so I hope he can discover the love I have for it.

Hey guys!! Any suggestion about DISCO, 80 'S, FUNKY MUSIC... Could you help me out with a link?? I want this period to practice and perform this lovely music!! Not a free site....Only to pay.. Because I know from oldest DJ 'S that if you pay the music the better quality it is. Free music it may sound good in the headphones or in your speakers from your house but if you play in a club....that will be very disappointing accident! PEACE!!!!

A great djpool site is CD Pool! Also check out the Suicide Sheep channel (not mrsuicidesheep but suicidesheep) which uploads free EDM tracks daily! Personally I buy some music but I also download a lot via youtube and other sources. Personally I dont have the finances yet too buy everything especially since I don't dj live (so I don't 'earn' back the money). But if you do what is 20 dollar? So anyone trying to go in professionally should support the people that make the songs that makes you able to make a living! But at the same time I got 47 gb of music right now. Aint nobody got money fo dat! That's why I paid only for my favorite artists. Cause at the end of the day some music simply doesnt 'deserve' to be bought. For example the Gill Scott Heron discography makes no sense to buy to me because the man himself wont get the money anyway (RIP). But artists like iMayday! or Yelawolf deserve every penny. But the real question remains, why the fuck did I write a damn essay on here?

There is no disrespect in that because for some beginners it's just not affordable and they are just asking for a way to get started! Just because someone is not rich , he shouldn't be stopped from achieving his dream! Money can't stop someone's passion! And also I sensed some ego in there I mean can understand that it was difficult during your time but that should make u happy that kids starting out today can do more with less spending. Can u imagine how many more kids would be able to start out because of this. And who knows what great artists that we enjoy today would not have been on the scene if money was would have been in their way. Martin Garrix is one such example.
@djTLMtv
@djTLMtv 7 лет назад
+Abhishek Kumar (Aon Starr) So this is the message you want to send to kids? They shouldn't have to work for anything? It will all just be given to them? You say money can't stop passion and you're absolutely right! If someone truly has passion for this they will put in the work! I wasn't rich either when I got started. And btw, I'm still not rich! 😄 And I do see it as a bit of disrespect when someone asks an older DJ, who spent a lot of time and money to build their music collection, to just give it away for free. Especially because a new DJ can get his/her hands on so much music through a DJ pool for 20,- or 30,- per month.
@AbhishekKumar-lp5rc
@AbhishekKumar-lp5rc 7 лет назад
Let's say there are two equally hard working kids. One dedicates all his time to spinning, learning djing techniques, flow of emotions of crowd, grouping songs for sets and other necessary stuff and then their is another kid who spends half of his time working as a delivery boy at Dominoes so he could afford his music and dedicated only half of the time to work on the important stuff. It's a no brainer that the former will be a better dj at the end of the day. The truth is now we can get music for free(although it's illegal) and I think it's one of the biggest reasons why some kids could even think of becoming a Dj, I myself have been one of those people. Now I know It's not fair for industry professionals and top djs like you because you worked your ass off to get to where you are today and also to people who create music. But the truth is I totally believe that piracy is a bless for our generation. It is the seed for a million dreams. I am saying this despite the fact that I am a music producer and a professional software engineer myself and I am one of those people who are at loss but I think it's a sacrifice we should make cause it's totally worth it. It may not help the competition between previous and current generation but it will definitely lead to better music in future and that's something we should look forward to as music lovers. I hope u understand what I am trying to say.

Dude, if you have a controller (i bought a mixer for 50 bucks on amazon and i use my tablet to load music and scratch) you can easely download good music from Soundcloud / youtube for free trust me, i know it's not the best but it's really good for a start. Try to find some free samples on beatport too if you can, best of luck!

Hey I have a question for you Dj TLM. When buying music online for my digital dj setup should I get the higher queality format like .wav? It will take a huge amount of space, but is the difference in quality noticeable in a club soundsystem compared to mp3? Thanks, i hope i get a response
@listrix9087
@listrix9087 9 лет назад
Prog47 When going about the quality of music, digital djs normally get MP3 files. This is normally because programs such as Serato are made to work with MP3 files, I'm not sure if you can use other file types, look it up. But also you have to look at the quality of the MP3 file. The top quality MP3 files are 320k/bit. If you download your MP3 files legally, either through websites such as SoundCloud or through Record Pools, the MP3 quality should be 320k/bit.
@waxbg
@waxbg 7 лет назад
i'd suggest to get the wav, in most cases i've seen they when you pay for a song you get the option to choose mp3 | flac | wav and so on, so get the wav which is the best quality and then you can convert on your computer to anything you like. Just get the best you paid for :)

Using a 3rd party site to rip music off youtube, soundcloud, etc will, %100 of the time give you a low quality copy of the song. DO NOT play rips thru a decent - good setup because the audience can hear the difference immediately. I was playing a gig a few weeks back, as the warm up DJ, and things sounded great, then the DJ with the "PRIME" slot came on with a library full of soundcloud rips & his set sounded like garbage in comparison. he had to redline the mixer to get the same volume & that caused bad clipping.

Spotify & labels need to make an agreement with Serato or something to step up the digital game. Maybe make a special Serato subscription for it or something..

Just a wild idea: wouldn't it be quite cool if you'd put together a small compilation of tracks for practise to go along with your tutorials? Just a few tracks that work well together to practise beatmatching, timing, and so on. Of course the songs should be okay and free for you to use like this, with permission from the artist via soundcloud for example.
