This song uses the text from "There Will be Rest" by Sara Teasdale:
There will be rest, and sure stars shining
Over the roof-tops crowned with snow,
A reign of rest, serene forgetting,
The music of stillness holy and low.
I will make this world of my devising
Out of a dream in my lonely mind.
I shall find the crystal of peace, - above me
Stars I shall find.
Sara Teasdale's poetry was highly celebrated, even during her life. But in 1931, her best friend and former lover overdosed on sleeping pills, a grief she never truly recovered from. Though there is no exact agreed-upon date, this poem was written around 1933, at the end of her life. She battled depression for the bulk of her life, and earlier that year, when she was diagnosed with chronic pneumonia, she fell into a downward spiral.
She went the same way her friend did, an overdose of sleeping pills. A reign of rest from which she would never awake.
Effectively, this was her suicide note: a declaration of hope and an affirmation that there will be peace in her next life.
Many thanks to my friend for recording this song with me.
