My Reaction / Analysis of FINAL FANTASY 7 REMAKE's Opening Movie Theme, as a professional Music Producer (俺の FF7 リメイクオープニングムービートレーラー BGM 反応).
I am absolutely HYPED for this game and its music.
Lots of cool things to discuss here, but this is my most nerdy reaction so far in terms of how much I analyse the music. Hope it won't be too hard to follow!

One thing that I absolutely love is how there's that synthesized chime JUST before the FF7 remake logo appears, faithfully recreated from the original intro. The remake intro is largely an orchestral piece, but the industrial sounds for percussion, that underlying synth arpeggio, and that chime before the logo all in conjunction with the imagery really sell that this isn't just a fantasy RPG, it's largely also going to be an epic sci-fi. I'm really glad they kept that sound before the logo.

Additionally that note before the logo appearance differing by being in a major key as opposed to the minor key in the original and all the various versions up until this point. To me it lends a feeling of completeness, more than a sense of “welcome back” as it is “it is finished”

This sound! OMG. I’m with you 100%. This sound is FF7. It would have not been right without it. It is a warning to get my emotions in check because the meteor hit is going to wreck me. Hits like a ton of bricks every time.

I was waiting for it too. I think my giddiness escalated right when the chime happened, as I anticipated the logo appearing. It was like craving a food you haven't had in years and biting in to that delectable taste again for the first time.

Haha, I guess it's a byproduct of being Italian, and having OWA imprinted in my head due to how many times I heard it in my attempts to defeat Seph in KH1. Still haven't managed there!

@@AlexMoukalaMusic Never played KH1. If he's anything as challenging as he was in classic ff7 though, I'd imagine he's a bitch and a half to beat. Edit: Also, on the note of Yuffie. While annoying she may be (especially for a certain part of the game to do specifically with her...) She was, tactically speaking, one of the STRONGEST characters in the game, alongside Cait Sith, and possibly Tifa or Vincent, depending on your play style. Cait Sith was more if you were feeling EXTREMELY lucky.

I mean it isn't that hard once you look at the lyrics. "Estuans Interius Ira Vehementi" isn't that hard to memorize, neither is "Sors immanis, et inanis". The only hard part about the lyrics is the notes and the variation between high and low keys. It's orchestration is more complex. It may be that I have more experience with foreign and dead languages but singing Sanskrit and Latin ain't that hard.

When Aeris stands up and looks down the alley way, like she's spooked by something, and they play another hint of Sephiroth's theme right there: that is some foreboding stuff, and I get goosebumps knowing what's coming.

Lots of cool things to discuss here, but this is my most nerdy reaction so far in terms of how much I analyse the music. Hope it won't be too hard to follow! PS. I suspected the arranger for this one was Masashi Hamauzu, but after the soundtrack dropped I got the confirmation I was wrong. It's Shotaro Shima!

I just love how that added ominous chorus on the alley bit now actually foreshadows Aerith's fate... But right after that you also get to see a glimpse of her unwavering optimistic nature when she picks up that stomped flower and looks up - the sense of hope and distant light seeping into the track as the camera pulls up while the opening theme slowly swells into a full bloom and we're graced with the title splash. I'm not sure if I'll survive playing this game now that it's being realized with modern technology but atleast I would die crying happy tears :')

Hell, I hadn't played the original, and I was already taken on a Rollercoaster of emotions with the soundtrack alone. The whole dark atmosphere the music sets while showing a really cool looking industrial town, perfectly shows how yeah life looks cool and all, but there's something darker going on here (which it visually shows with the dying flower. Sephiroths theme interrupting Aerith's theme was suuuuper unsettling. Then the cherry on top, that beautiful trumpet coming in to shift the mood from unsettling to awesome and wondrous, which escalates and just keeps going, til finally RIGHT before the title card, we hear this retro synth? type instrument de-escalate chromaticly before the music comes CRASHING *chef's kiss* beautiful I ended up shedding so many tears of excitement from that opening alone

When I heard that sephiroth motif "estuans interius" mixed with the ff7 main theme my mind was blown. I was like "You can do that?". And again, being able to hear some of the accompanying melodies a layer under being brought out by you is amazing. I've commented previously suggesting an analysis on the KH3 Remind's rendition of Vectors to the Heavens. For FF14 track I would suggest Invincible (Hades final phase theme), it uses the same motif as the shadowbringers main theme. This is something that Soken does very frequently and masterfully is using the same motif for 3-4 pieces of music that associates with the same zone (day theme, night theme, dungeon theme etc), but each feels distinct and memorable on their own (my personal favourite of this example is the lochs in stormblood). I would love to see your analysis on motifs in general.

Great idea! I think it'd be cool to make a video about one specific leitmotif throughout different tracks. Thanks for that! I'd also love to analyse KH3's music, I yet have to listen to the ReMind arrangements of Vector To The Heavens etc. Will keep it into consideration for the future besides FF14.

@@AlexMoukalaMusic yes please!!!! All of ReMind's arrangements are PHENOMENAL. Especially the boss fight with Master Xehanort where you play as Kairi (I know you don't have to play as her....but c'mon.....who didn't??). And of course, I commented on another video that I'd love your analysis of FFXV's Somnus and ReMind's Yozora Boss Battle theme. Because the similarities are undeniable, despite Nomura's protests haha.

Their extended buildup on the zoom out over Midgar followed by their logo reveal sounded awesome. Your version's second reveal sound after the logo drop was very surprising and sounded incredible. They're both genius.

Great to see a professional's view on the FF7 Remake soundtrack! If you wouldn't mind, can you do one for the Ending Theme - Hollow too. Most of fans agreed it has Crisis Core vibe but I actually realised that Nobuo uses the original soundtrack "Anxiety" as reference when i'm trying to re-create it in 8-bit music.

I love the analysis around 7:50 of the buildup to the title reveal. The extension of the buildup tells an awesome story for those who know the original, it's saying what we're also seeing as the massive size of the city unfolds before us: This is the Midgar you know, but this time it's going to be a lot bigger than you remember.

I love your analysis because it goes so much deeper than anyone else I've heard or seen, and yet you still bring your own personal impressions and breakdowns into things in order to dissect the whole piece. Breaking down the latin in particular was super interesting. I hope one day (if you haven't already) you could listen to some of the tracks from Final Fantasy X and the remixed/re-orchestrated versions from the HD remake. Personally I adore the classic tunes and their more manufactured, synthetic tones over the real orchestrated pieces, but that's just personal preference and nostalgia. Much love! All the respect!

I'm so glad you did this one next! My BF linked it to me, and I was a big FFVII fan as a kid, I would peek in my old brothers room just to watch him play. In the start I was really scared, and I think your interpretation of that is so perfect. You hear the Sephiroth lyrics and there is just DREAD in your stomach. It's so ominous. This opening is such an emotional roller coaster, cause as soon as Aerith hits and the music changes I teared up, and then it's right back into the ominous feeling! Followed by the epic climax. They did a fantastic job. I never would have made the connection to the Masashi's other work. I love that so much. :D Can't wait to see what you do next. I'm hoping for FFXIV's Insanity!!

From what I've seen of the demo, Cloud is going to come default with Fire materia in the Buster sword rather than the Lightning and Ice combo he had in the original. Estuans Interius Ira Vehementi Indeed. It may be Sephiroth's theme but it is Cloud who truly suffers from "the fire inside". The fires of Nibelheim. The rage residing in him. Nojima has also commented on "the fire he saw in Cloud's eyes" when he first saw his new design. It's going to be hard for me to keep Fire materia on Cloud but, the dev team is making a fairly heavy handed suggestion in this case. Interesting that they open the game with that particular section of One Winged Angel.

But this was great. I appreciate the breakdown and how you brought attention to all of the little details and the composer used to set the tone. I, personally, am very interested in how the chords work in building that tension a bit more but you put a lot of work into this and it was very informative. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for this breakdown, the thing I was afraid most we'd lose in the remake is the sense of foreboding we got with Sephiroth (because of the change in pace and us seeing Sephiroth while in Midgar), but this opening just screams a sense of forewarning with the visuals and sound design, you did a great job explaining why.

I'm so glad I found your channel! I want to be a music composer/producer and I'm a huge Final Fantasy nerd, FFVII having been my favourite game for almost my whole life. So I am loving your videos! If I could make a recommendation, I'd strongly suggest you check out the OST for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 if you haven't already. It's been a long time since I've just fallen head over heels for an OST on a similar level to FF music, and XC2 did just that for me. Specifically, I'd love to see a reaction to The Kingdom Of Uraya from XC2. It just fills me with a huge sense of adventure, happiness and comfort; and I'd love for you to break it down so I can better understand how it actually does that. Either way, keep up these great videos!

Man this was great. Gave me a much deeper appreciation for what is going on underneath it all. In a similar vein I'd suggest doing a similar breakdown of the music from the Final Fantasy 14-A Realm Reborn trailer called End of An Era. Which features the song "Answers". Much like with this trailer the director did an incredible job matching the musical themes with the visuals.

I was very confused with the rearrangement at first of course because of the extra 3 minutes at the beginning but once we hit the logo music I was yelling EEEEEEEEE like a teenager. I never took the clue that this would be different tho until that point when theyre in the Shinra building and that thing happens-then I was all 😱 I think your inner geek and my in er geek will get along just fine.
